WELCOME TO WEEK TWO

Hello Class:

Welcome to Week Two of SHRM. I hope you enjoyed Week One and are now
excited about learning how HRM can really drive the bottom line. Last week
we discussed the context of Strategic Human Resources Management. Its
purpose was to establish the context for managing human resources (HR)
within an organization. The focus was on understanding how external
environmental conditions drive business strategies and how those strategies
should be used to drive HR practices. Businesses that want to compete in the
global marketplace must pay particular attention to their employees.

This week for Unit Two we will look at the Context of Strategic Human
Resource Management again This week we will be looking at the roles and
competencies required of Human Resource managers. HR managers are
responsible for the implementation portion of the I/O
(Industrial/Organizational) strategy. While senior managers formulate
strategy, it is the lower levels of management, particularly HR, that implement
it. A major portion of the HR manager’s responsibility is to develop a HR
strategy, which typically consists of two parts: planning and organizing. After
HR prepares this strategy, it implements it through its efforts in the functional
areas of recruiting, staffing, selection, compensation, benefits, performance
management, training and development, and labor relations. This week we
focus on how HR prepares its strategy, specifically that strategy associated
with human resource planning and work organizing.

I hope you have a great week. I look forward to our time in the Threads
together.

Regards,

Dr. Michelle T. Ross
