SELF- CONTAINING BREATHING APPRATUS

(A) CHECKING PRACITISING AND WEARING SCBA

AIM:

To check and practice in wearing of SCBA

DESCRIPTION:

1. Self-contained breathing apparatus comprises a face assembly, a frame (back plate) and harness assembly, an
air cylinder and valve, a high pressure reducing valve, a whistle and a pressure valve and a gauge.
2. The face mask which forms a airtight seal around the face has an exhalation valve and voice diaphragm.

CHECKS BEFORE WATCHING THE BREATHING APPRATUS

1. Ensure bypass valve closed.

2. Open main valve fully.
3. Take the gauge reading.
4. Hold the face piece to face, inhale deeply to ensure using demand valve.
5. Turn off main valve, gauge reading should remain constant.
6. Release pressure and check for low pressure alarm.
7. Check the harness and their tightening.

PRACTISING AND WEARING OF S.C.B.A.

1. Adjust the shoulder strap so that it is comfortable to wear.

2. Place the looped strap of face piece over the head.
3. Open face piece on chin then tighten from bottom strap upwards and main valve and inhaling the air, get to

(B) CHECKING, PRACTISING IN WEARING BELLOW TYPE

AIM:

To check and practice in wearing of bellow type.

DESCRIPTION:

1. Go lengths of hoses, reinforced with supply in fresh air.

2. Bellows or compressor to supply fresh air.
3. 130 feet wire hearted pipe line.
4. Respirator type face piece.
5. Inhaling and exhaling valves.
6. Equalizer tube acts as reservoir.
7. Strainer on air supply tube must be fresh air.
8. Air supply depends on wearer’s lung movement.

ADVANTAGES OF BELLOW TYPE

1. No time limit.
2. Cooler in use.
3. Little knowledge required to train personnel.
4. Care and maintenance easy.
5. Testing simple.
6. Mask is at positive pressure provided pumping rate material.

DISAVANTAGES OF BELLOW TYPE:

1. All intakes must be carefully watched (smoke/fumes)

2. Two men or more required.
3. Tubing heavy, difficulty in laying hose lines.
4. Air supply may be damaged or trapped.
5. Reduced pressure by partial vacuum.
6. Limited by distance.
