Artificial Intelligence
1 Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks
commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing
systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason,
discover meaning, generalize or learn from past experience. Increased data volumes, advanced
algorithms, and improvements in computing power and storage Since the development of the digital
computer in the 1940s, it has been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very
complex tasks as, for example, discovering proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess with
great proficiency. Still, despite continuing advances in computer processing speed and memory capacity,
there are as yet no programs that can match human flexibility over wider domains or in tasks requiring
much everyday knowledge. On the other hand, some programs have attained the performance levels of
human experts and professionals in performing certain specific tasks, so that artificial intelligence in this
limited sense is found in applications as diverse as medical diagnosis, computer search engines, and
voice or handwriting recognition1.

2 Goals
2.1 Advancement for existing process23
 Improved Health Outcomes: Patients are producing significant amounts of health data.
Providers are using electronic health records generating enormous amounts of information. This
data can be utilized significantly with the help of Artificial Intelligence for various medical
facilities like diagnosing symptoms via intelligent emergency triage, Google’s DeepMind machine
to diagnose diseases of the eye, Robotic surgery.

 Voice Assistants: Voice Assistants can learn how to speak naturally and in response to the way
humans communicate as AI gets better in machine learning. This will allow for more fluid search
and more intelligent and natural conversation between humans and voice assistants like Alexa
and Google Home.

 Retail: Instead of just talking to the customer, AI and machine learning are enabling retailers to
engage and interact with customers in a two-way, mutually-beneficial conversation. AI is
emerging as a huge tool and resource for retail. Retailers can leverage AI to enhance customers’

in-store experiences, such as digital fitting rooms, or via innovative and interactive mobile apps
and even loyalty programs.

 Improving Transportation: Advancements in AI that could help curb the deadly incidents taking
place. Railroad safety Train crashes, while rare, often take place because of a failure to respond
to the warning signs, AI is being developed to monitor trains from remote locations and help
predict failures before they occur. AI may also soon be impacting transportation through
autonomous cargo ships. Japanese shipping companies are working on an AI solution that could
take into account factors like the weather in order to plot the most efficient routes for cargo
ships to keep accidents to a minimum.

 FinTech: The ever-growing capabilities of artificial intelligence allow it to analyze large amounts

of financial data in order to make predictive decisions in areas like the stock market. Not only
can it provide the best options at this point, but it can tailor those options to meet the
investment patterns of specific financial firms.

2.2 As a solution for the problems

 Environment: Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the planet. Artificial Intelligence
can help with Better climate predictions. AI can also unlock new insights from the massive
amounts of complex climate simulations generated by the field of climate modeling, Showing
the effects of extreme weather, monitoring coal plant emissions with satellite imagery for
knowing the source of carbon. AI can automate the analysis of images of power plants to get
regular updates on emissions. It also introduces new ways to measure a plant’s impact, by
analyzing numbers of nearby infrastructure and electricity use. That’s handy for gas-powered
plants that don’t have the easy-to-measure plumes that coal-powered plants have etc. 4

 Transportation: The application of AI in the transport field is aimed overcoming the challenges
of an increasing travel demand, CO2 emissions, safety concerns, and environmental
degradation5.
o Public Safety: By tracking crime data in real time safety of citizens using public
transport in urban areas can be improved. This will also facilitate the police to
increase their efficiency by patrolling and keeping the citizens safe.
o Autonomous Vehicles: Self driving cars use artificial intelligence to function and make
calculated decisions on the road.
o Better Planning and Decision Making: Transport system can utilize accurate
prediction techniques to forecast the volume of traffic for specific time using artificial
intelligence.
o Pedestrian Safety: Using artificial intelligence, the path of pedestrians or cyclists can
be easily predicted by autonomous vehicles, which would help in decreasing instances
of traffic accidents and injuries.
o Control Traffic Flow: The data can be adapted for traffic management via artificial
intelligence, it will result in streamlined traffic patterns and a significant reduction in

congestion. Also, Real-time tracking and smarter traffic light algorithms can control
higher and lower traffic patterns effectively. 6
 Food industry: The food processing industry is benefitting greatly from the latest advancements
in artificial intelligence, which is doing everything like Sorting food, Improving the supply chain,
Ensuring personal Hygiene, cleaning processing equipment etc. 7

 Disease and Human Suffering: AI is already being used in healthcare and will help in many
situations like Detecting skin cancer, Eye health, Drug development, knowing when someone in
a coma will awaken, Read CT scans, Recognize depression, Robot doctors, etc. 8

 Education: AI is changing the education industry by simplifying administrative tasks, Smart

content like personalized digitized books, Smart Tutors, Virtual lectures and Learning
environment etc.910

 Population: The greatest global challenge is Overpopulation. AI can be used to help solve some
of the world’s biggest social and economic issues of our day. In fact, scientists are now planning
to use AI’s capabilities in the fight against poverty and overpopulation 11

 Energy: The following chart shows the use of AI in different areas of energy sector. 12

These are the classification of AI opportunities in Power Sector. We can divide the Energy systems in 1.
Classification and 2. Optimization. In Distribution there are some interesting and very recent advances in
AI for doing phase identification, meter to transformer mapping also determining weather. Weather also
applies down in distributed supply and generation portfolio and when we think of solar certainly total
sky imaging there are also some good projects like arpa-e has a project called nodes looking at
distributed intelligence and then SunShot also another good grant program in north America which was
looking at the classification of solar profile for prediction of weather in advance of cloud cover in large
solar farms. Another good example in the distribution sector is Fault Analytics. The high impedance fault
identification, outage identification, prediction ahead of time, alarm classification and situational
awareness for distribution and transmission operations are key for utilizing an operator-based approach
rather than a technology-centric approach for situational awareness. Another area is reliability
maintenance i.e. understanding how equipment changes over time, typically called the bathtub curve
meaning what is the probability that something would fail and how can we predict the failure over time.

In customer services, we can use AI for accessing theft, growth pattern and call routing in IVR systems,
for example, if there is expected an outage in a certain location, and a customer calls, which starts to
flow in then it’s possible to route, based on that advanced information.

In generation RCM maintenance plant & asset management and understanding, the asset health inside
of a Plant are the key areas for the use of AI. In generation the ability to expect a fault in a part through
vibration analysis or any other baseline analysis of the part where the process’s behavior is key and
critical to effective modern plant management. Also, for Distributed supply and generation portfolio
management, understanding and predicting weather and how weather impacts. For example, the run of
the river for any hydro plant or the supply for coal piles affects a coal power plant. In distribution
systems how the DER supply matches with the generation portfolio and how to best optimize the use of
new resources.

For regulatory sector AI can be used for the planning areas or some fast response classification critical
infrastructure protection, threat identification and response, capacity-driven rate design and load and
revenue forecasting. There are some good examples for load forecasting like Particle Swarm
Optimization, Agent-based systems. An agent-based simulation is excellent for load forecasting and is
commonly utilized with the Artificial Neural Network used for load and revenue forecasting for effective
program design.

In Optimization, there are operations, markets and products & services that have some specific areas in
DER, those areas are Home Energy Management Systems, Solar PV plant, Microgrids, Storage and EV
mobile storage. There is an idea for autonomous vehicles that how many vehicles do we really need in
order to get an effective base response that we can have as a hedge against some balanced portfolio
approach in supply for power plant?  How many resources do we need? We can use AI to explore this
and try to dial in on the least amount that we need any one time or the maximum amount of time that
we prefer in order to elicit a specific response in the system.

Asset Management, controls, assigning maintenance and TSP (traveling salesman problem) are few
aspects that can be e solved with AI How can we and most effectively get all the points of interest to
reach in one day, what are the least number of stops that we need to make and in order to optimize the
use of that single fleet vehicle and to do the same with thousands of vehicles how we can manage all
those Points and effectively pick routes.

For market, products, and services we can use AI for the optimization of the portfolio itself like
financially assessing the capabilities of the power plants, what do they need to produce and the time
when should they should be producing. If we can push VARs at the edge of the system, the system is a
lot more efficient because we have many e few losses to deal with so distribution intelligence and
artificial intelligence at the edge and centrally.

3 Advantages
 Efficiency and Reliability: AI will help to improve the economic efficiency of energy, which is a
crucial element of sustainability. 13
 Production Optimization: The plant manager and plant operators, assisted by an AI, can
optimize the production in an efficient, dynamic and holistic manner, with a machine that
considers the implications of localized actions in the future across the complete process, not
limiting itself to optimization of local sub-processes. 14
 Consumers: AI helps in automation of specific customer service problems such as Billing
inquiries, Payments, change of address or personal details, reports of service interruption and
outages, Reports of hazardous situations, New service connections. 15

4 Limitations
 Inaccuracies reflected in the results: The principle limitation of AI is that it learns from the data.
There is no other way in which knowledge can be incorporated. That means inaccuracies will be
shown in the results. And any additional layers of prediction or analysis have to be added
separately.
 Perform single task: Today’s AI systems are trained to do a clearly defined task. The system that
plays poker cannot play solitaire or chess. The system that detects fraud cannot drive a car or
give you legal advice. In fact, an AI system that detects health care fraud cannot accurately
detect tax fraud or warranty claims fraud. 16

and mindsets into one of a kind data points or profiles 17.

5 Key Applications Areas

Smart Mobility
Smart Cities and
Healthcare Agriculture and Education
Infrastructure
Transportation

5.1 Healthcare Sector in India:

Healthcare sector is facing the several problems in India like Shortage of qualified healthcare
professionals and services. There is a shortage of qualified doctors, nurses, technicians and
infrastructure. WHO recommended 3.5 hospital beds per 1,000 population10 where as in India
there are 1.3 hospital beds per 1,000 population and 0.76 doctors and 2.09 nurses per 1,000
population where WHO recommends 1 doctor and 2.5 nurses per 1,000? There is also Non-
uniform accessibility to healthcare in India with physical access continuing which is a major barrier
to both preventive and curative health services. Reactive approach to essential healthcare is an
important factor due to lack of awareness, access to services and behavioral factors implies that
majority of patients approach a hospital / physician only when a disease has reached an advanced
stage, thus increasing the cost of care and reducing the chances of recovery whereas Affordability
also remains a problem with private expenditure accounting for ~70% of healthcare expenses, of
which ~62% is out-of-pocket expenditure, probably one of the highest in the world. AI can be very
useful in this sector.

5.2 Agriculture:

Use of following AI related technologies have the potential to impact productivity and efficiency.
Soil health monitoring and restoration has helped agriculture in India as Image recognition and
deep learning models have enabled distributed soil health monitoring without the need of
laboratory testing infrastructure. The Indian agriculture sector is vulnerable to climate change due
to being rain dependent. Varying weather patterns such as increase in temperature, changes in
precipitation levels, and ground water density, can affect farmers especially in the rainfed areas of
the country. AI can be used to predict advisories for sowing, pest control, input control can help in
ensuring increased income and providing stability for the agricultural community Using remote
sensed data, high resolution weather data, AI technologies, and AI platform, it is possible to
monitor crops holistically and provide additional insights to the extension workers/farmers for
their farms as & when required.

5.3 Smart Cities and Infrastructure:

The conceptualization of Smart City, varies from city to city and country to country, depending on
the level of development, willingness to change and reform, resources and aspirations of the city
residents. The core infrastructure elements in a smart city would include:

o Adequate water supply

o Assured electricity supply
o Sanitation, including solid waste management
o Efficient urban mobility and public transport
o Affordable housing, especially for the poor
o Robust IT connectivity and digitalization
o Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation
o Sustainable environment
o Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly
o Health and education. 18
o Artificial intelligence, makes use of smart algorithms to help automate and improve
many activities and operations of a municipality. AI, in combination with IoT, is helping
to improve the smart city concept. A major characteristic of a smart city is livability. A
city with high ‘livability’ would be one with healthy living conditions; little pollution, less
congestion, and instant access to services. Another aspect of cities that can be improved
with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is workability. This is the infrastructure enabled
to allow the city to compete on a global scale for work and jobs. Think computing,
connectivity, energy, and other essential services. By providing intelligent insights, AI
can allow city planners to allocate resources more efficiently, use existing assets more
effectively, and improve the sharing and management of data and information across
systems. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, technology such as AI can help to
lower emissions by up to 15%, minimize water consumption by up to 30% and reduce
the average time to commute by up to20%. 19

management

5.4 Smart Mobility and Transportation21

The Smart Mobility is one of the important pillars of the Smart City concept. Using various technology
solutions in every field of transport and traffic science, possibilities for implementing technology into
transport sector is more and more increasing. The development of information and communication
technologies is the key factor for creating a Smart City. Mobility in the cities has become one of the
biggest problems for local municipalities. The Smart Mobility is a concept, where with various past and
real-time data, and with the help of information and communication technologies, travel time is
optimized, resulting in reductions of space usage, road congestion, road accidents and emissions of
harmful gases. Figure shows that Smart Mobility consists of various digital solutions. These Digital
solutions are focused on optimizing demand and supply of people and goods.22

5.4.1 Key Principles of Smart Mobility23
o Flexibility: Multiple modes of transportation allow travelers to choose which ones work
best for a given situation.
o Efficiency: The trip gets the traveler to their destination with minimal disruption and in as
little time as possible.
o Integration: The full route is planned door-to-door, regardless of which modes of
transportation are used.
o Clean Technology: Transportation moves away from pollution-causing vehicles to zero-
emission ones.
o Safety: Fatalities and injuries are drastically reduced.

AI can be used in Planning, Designing and Controlling Transportation Network Structures for mobility.
The objective of planning is to identify the community needs and decide on the best approach to meet
this demand while utilizing the impact of social, environmental and economic in transportation. An area
where AI applications have also seen rapid developments is Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). These
systems aim to alleviate congestion and improve driving experience using a variety of technologies and
communication systems. They capture important data that can be integrated with machine learning
technology. For example, deep reinforcement learning has been used for real time optimisation of traffic
control policies embedded in large scale ITS systems. 24

AI for Railways: Train operators can obtain situational intelligence through real time operational data
and analyses them in three different dimensions: spatial, temporal and nodal

Community Based Parking: With the advent of electric vehicles, AI will be needed to mediate the
complex vehicle grid interactions (VGI) as well as for charging optimization. AI can help optimize parking,
likely by minimizing vehicle downtime and maximizing driving time. Community based parking using AI
helps cars in traffic to collect data on vacant parking spaces, and allocates cars to spaces such that the
demand is always met.

Autonomous trucking: AI ensures optimal road-space utilization, helping improve road infrastructure
capacity. AI can also help to increase safety and hauling efficiency through intelligent platooning,
wherein trucks form platoons giving drivers the liberty to rest while the platoon keeps moving.

Intelligent Transportation Systems: use of AI, can help in real time dynamic decisions on traffic flows
such as lane monitoring, access to exits, toll pricing, allocating right of way to public transport vehicles,
enforcing traffic regulations through smart ticketing etc. By using accident data and driver behavior at
specific locations on the road network related to topology, road geometric design, speed limit etc.
accident heat maps could be generated.

Artificial Intelligence 11 | P a g e
Travel route/flow optimization: AI can help make smart predictions for public transport journeys by
optimizing total journey time including access time, waiting time and travel time with the access to
traffic data at the network level. AI can help predict flow of traffic at the network level and suggest
alternative flow strategies in order to contain congestion, alleviating cities of this major issue

5.5 Education
While AI may not completely replace a teacher, it has the potential to greatly assist teachers in
efficiently and effectively managing multi-level / multigame classrooms, by judging learning levels of
individual students, and allowing automated development of customized educational content.
Intelligent Tutoring Systems can provide great benefit to students through delivery of learning materials
adapted to the child’s proficiency level, learning style, and pace of learning. It can also help in
assessment of student’s level of attention or comprehension to appropriately design remedial
instruction. In a recent preliminary experiment conducted in Andhra Pradesh, AI applications processed
data on all students based on parameters such as gender, socioeconomic factors, academic
performance, school infrastructure, teacher skills, etc., with the objective of helping the government
identify students likely to drop out. Test results could inform suggestions to enroll students in vocational
studies.

6 Applications in energy sector

The energy sector is one of the many that are experiencing deep and lasting changes to business models
and operations due to digitization. From oil and gas providers to power and electric grids, the industry
looks nothing like it did 100, 50, or even 10 years ago. The foreseeable future may hold just as much
change as the past several decades as new technologies, applications and business demands emerge
and enterprises rely even more on software and IT platforms to create efficiencies. 25

MANAGEMENT

6.1 Storage
If a certain area of the grid is experiencing high demand and straining the grid, a network of available
energy can be mobilized by AI-enabled software to meet that demand. The result is additional revenue
for the customer, along with the energy-bill-saving benefits of storage. AI-based controls enable energy
storage to deliver a range of new value streams for solar projects, including reduced demand charges,
increased revenue through virtual power plants, future-proofing against changing rates and more value
captured from the investment tax credit. AI is needed to perform the predictive analytics, machine
learning, big data required to achieve these returns. Every second of data is captured on loads, solar
generation, weather, nearby grid congestion and electricity rate, and in turn, AI drives real-time
adaptive storage dispatch that generates increasing value for the customer and the grid. 26

6.2 Autonomous grid

Developing an intelligent power and energy system is becoming more and more urgent to promote the
power production and consumption revolution and construct a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient
energy system. Artificial intelligence technology with attractive features such as deep learning, cross-
border integration, man-machine cooperation, and autonomous control shows the strong handling
capacity in perceptual intelligence, computational intelligence, and cognitive intelligence, which shows
great potential in reshaping the way of producing and utilizing the electrical energy. In particular, the
combination of artificial intelligence with cloud computing, big data, internet of things (IoT), and mobile
interconnection can endow the power system with features of intelligent interaction, safety, and
controllability27

6.3 Upstream exploration:
Oil and gas firms have not had the best process to capture and transfer the knowledge from veteran
engineers in a repeatable manner. Digitizing the collective knowledge and delivering maintenance
insights to new engineers might now be possible with AI. AI tools can help oil and gas companies digitize
records and automate the analysis of geological data and charts, potentially leading to the identification
of issues, such as pipeline corrosion or increased equipment usage. 28

6.4 Energy Consumption:

Catching operational strays or energy leaks quickly is the aim of efficient real-time energy
management. AI systems can predict when these leaks happen, especially for large office buildings
where equipment might deviate from optimum settings. Machine Learning techniques can
detect consumption behaviors and energy use patterns. Such meaningful insights can, therefore, help
utility companies build better client segments, and personalize customer offers with relevant
information.

1.1 Load Forecasting

Many load-forecasting systems based on different technologies have been developed. Among those, the
more recent approaches that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies
have proven to be more accurate than others. Artificial neural network (ANN) technology has been the
most successful methodology for load forecasting. An ANN-based load forecaster is developed by
arranging historical data in the form of example patterns. For instance, if next-day load is to be
predicted, the example patterns are formed as data pairs (outcome, factors). The outcome is the next
day’s load, whereas the factors include variables that this outcome is dependent on such as the next
day’s temperature forecast, day of the week designation, and season of the year 29

6.5 Yield Optimization

AI is being used to improve efficiencies out of solar plants, as well as wind farms and even oil wells.
General Electric makes many of the parts of our energy infrastructure, from massive wind turbines to
gas-powered turbines used in more conventional power plants The company has spent years developing
software, called Predix, that can interpret sensor data from that equipment and uses artificial
intelligence to make its machines both operate more efficiently and predict failures before they
happen30

6.6 Predictive Maintenance

With AI and machine learning, we have the ability to process massive amounts of sensor data faster
than ever before. Predictive maintainence gives companies an unprecedented chance to improve upon
existing maintenance operations and even add something new. 31

6.7 Demand Management
AI can ensure steady energy availability by balancing the supply of power from conventional sources like
fossil fuels with that generated by renewable sources of energy like solar and wind energy. In this case,
individuals who own equipment related to renewable energy, such as solar panels, can be asked by
utilities companies to allow their batteries to be available for the grid in exchange for reduced
repayment costs on the equipment. This is an attractive alternative to deploying large scale batteries,
and promises to be made workable on a large scale. 32

6.8 Energy theft

AI can be used to detect usage patterns, payment history, and other customer data that may signal
irregular behavior.

6.9 Failure management

Long and frequent outages cause lost revenue, lower customer satisfaction levels, and more difficult
compliance processes. The patterns that AI algorithms recognize in data can also be used to predict
future outages. If an outage always happens after assets fail in a certain area, for example, AI can watch
for those asset failures, alerting teams when they happen. Teams can then carry out proactive
maintenance work to ensure that these outages don’t happen or if they do, that they aren’t as severe as
they might have been.33

6.10 Customer Insights

Customer service chatbots and virtual assistants can turn everyday tasks into simple commands. AI and
machine learning can sift through millions of pieces of information to find out exactly what matters to
customers to create a personalized experience. 34

6.11 Energy trading

Blockchain technology (using P2P and Artificial Intelligence) with its secure distributed accounting
system is method of recording data can be a new ''digital ledger'' of economy transactions, agreements
and contracts. The information data are placed in thousands of computers around the world.

6.12 Electric Vehicles

The electric vehicle (EV) market has now evolved to accommodate an environmental-friendly option:
Plugged-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs). Companies like General Motors, Ford, Nissan and Tesla are
producing PEVs, with the Tesla Roadster leading the way in the all-electric PEV category. While the

prevalence of PEVs can result in a drastic reduction in pollution due to not needing fossil fuels or
emitting pollutants, they still need charging outlets to power them on the go. Enter the Smart Grid. 35

6.13 Virtual Agent

Virtual agent software has improved over the past five years with advances in AI and cognitive
computing programs. Current conversational technology allows virtual agents to go far beyond
interactive voice response (IVR) systems; virtual agents understand customer intent and can provide
personalized answers to customer questions in a humanlike manner. 36

8 Technical Standards of AI37

Standards promote an expanded, more interoperable, and efficient marketplace. AI standards that articulate requirements, specifications,
guidelines, or characteristics can help to ensure that AI technologies and systems meet critical objectives for functionality, interoperability, and
trustworthiness—and that they perform accurately, reliably, and safely

AI standards encompass those specific to AI applications as well as standards for parts of an AI-driven system
