Differential: - It is a special arrangement of gear to permit one of rear wheels

of tractor slower or faster than the other; while turning the tractor on curved
path the inner wheel has to travel lesser distance than outer wheel. This
condition is fulfilled by differential unit which permit one of the rear wheels
of the tractor to move faster than other at turning point. The differential wheel
consists of;-
1) Differential casting. 2) Crown wheel 3) Half shaft
4) Bevel gear 5) Differential pinion.

Differential Lock :-It is a device to join both half axle of the tractor that
even if one wheel is under less resistance the tractor comes out from mud etc,
as both wheel move with the same speed and apply equal traction.

Final Drive: - It is a gear reduction unit in the power train between the
differential and the drive wheels final drive transmits the power to rear axle
and the wheels. The tractor rear wheels are not directly attached to the half
shaft but the drive is taken through a pair of spur gears. Each half shaft
transmits power in small gear which meshes with the large gear called bull
gear. The bull gear is mounted for final speed reduction suitable for tractors
rear wheel is known as final drive mechanism.

Planetary Drive: - A simple epicycle gear reduction unit consist of –

- A sun gear in center
- A planet gear with a carrier arm
- An annular or ring gear
When the sun gear is rotated the planet gear which is meshed with sun gear
rotates on its own axis and revolves around the sun gear. The path for
revolving its guided by the ring gear. Reduction of speed is achieved when
output is derived from planet carrier which rotates in the same direction
dire of
sun gear.

Applications: -
i. To increase the torque on the rear wheel axle.
ii. To reduce the load in the rear end.
