PREPARATION PHASE AFTER CARE

Position the patient properly-Elevating the head
of a person’s bed by 30–60 degrees
Assess the patient’s respiratory status and
overall clinical condition
SETTING UP CTT DRAINAGE SYSTEM
Provides after care of the equipment
Removes gloves and perform handwashing
Keep patient moving by turning frequently,
coughing, and deep breathing to help move
fluid and improve lung function

fill the water-seal chamber with sterile water to Records the intervention done, date and time it
the 2 cm line was performed

fill the suction control chamber with sterle
water to the prescribed level
connect and secure the chest drainage tube to
the patient’s chest tube prior to initiating
suction
CTT CARE AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Assess the patient for the following: chest tube
insertion site, drainage tubing for loops and
kinks, air bubbles and drainage output
CHANGING DRAINAGE SYSTEM
Don gloves
Clamps from insertion site
Note presence or absence of air leaks
Note state of dressing and patient’s skin
condition (Note skin around insertion site for
any subcutaneous crepitus (crackling sensation
felt on palpitation) that is due to carbon dioxide
escaping into the tissues)
Record chest tube drainage, amount and
consistency
Records patient’s response to procedure and
findings
If there was disconnection or dislodgement of
the tube, note the patient’s condition , notify
physician and actions taken

Removes the suction from the drainage system

Removes drainage system

Attaches new drainage system

Removes clamp from the chest tube

Assess the functionality of the chest tube

drainage system

Secures drainage bottle below the chest level
