• Balanced Processing: Being Fair-Minded - Throughout his life, Gupta has been involved in various

philanthropic causes and has been on the boards of several universities. He also displayed a certain
resentment towards money as he labored on with a senior partner’s salary when he was the
managing director. Rajaratnam was Gupta’s friend and the coincidence of the transactions and the
subsequent wiretaps show that somewhere or the other, he might not have segregated his personal
and professional commitments and stumbled which dealt a blow to his reputation unlike any other.

4 • Internalized Moral Perspective: Doing the Right Thing - Forgiving Rajaratnam after they met in jail
shows that he doesn’t harbor resentment. This shows the stability of his mind. Gupta has also been
actively involved in philanthropic, charitable, and volunteer efforts in the areas of education, global
health, and global business. Gupta also recounts how he sentenced to solitary confinement over
petty issues like using towels as a pillow or tying his shoelaces during a headcount.

Keeping his head steady in spite of all these hard comings shows a strong internal locus and moral
perspective. Leadership and Relationships Growing up in adversity, Rajat Gupta had seen way too
many ups and downs in life. This is what strengthened him and gave him the resolve to climb all the
steps of success and reach where he did in life. He is an authentic leader as demonstrated from the
early moments of his life.

He writes in his book “Mind without Fear” about how convinced he was of his own strengths and
where he wanted to get in life. Rajat Gupta is someone who brings about change for the right causes
as he did back in college and is determined to do so. He displays patience in convincing his clients
and believes in failing as he believes in the learning behind each of those failures. He is resolute yet
reticent. He believes in putting forward his points silently but strongly.

Being the head of the student body when he was in his third year during his undergraduate course
helped him develop his leadership skills and taught him to put forward his differences. He also built
strong relationships with his subordinates based on his honesty and the legitimacy of his claims.
Somewhere along the way, he might have been consumed by greed or would have been an
unwitting victim when he lost his ground of ethical practices that he had preached so long.
