SMCS - 3260,4208 SENR56060006

Remove Rear Wheel Bearings & Duo-Cone

Seals

Start By:

a. remove rear tires and rims

b. remove final drive carrier

1. Put a suitable support under wheel assembly (1) so it will not slide off the axle housing
when retainer (4) is removed.

2. Remove the upper retainer that holds the ring gear to the hub.

3. The weight of the hub and ring gear is 213 kg (470 lb). Fasten tool (A) to the ring gear
and hub as shown, and fasten a hoist to it.

4. Remove bolts (3), retainer (4) and the shims. Remove ring gear and hub (2) from the
axle housing.

Bearing notches properly positioned over balls (details A and B).

5. The weight of wheel assembly (1) is 907 kg (2000 lb). Install tooling (B), or similar
lifting brackets, and fasten a hoist to it.

NOTE: There is a notch located in the inner race of bearing cones (5) and (12). When
properly positioned, the notches in bearing cones (5) and (12) fit over a ball that is
inserted in each of two holes in the axle housing. The ball and notch prevent the inner
race of bearings (5) and (12) from rotating on the axle shaft.

1. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (2) and (3), and install the bearing cups in
wheel assembly (1). Use a hammer and punch to make sure the bearing cups are
against the shoulder of the wheel assembly.

2. Put clean final drive oil on O-ring seal (5), and install the O-ring seal on seal retainer
(4).

3. Put seal retainer (4) in position on wheel assembly (1), and install the bolts that hold it.

NOTE: Refer to the Topic "Installation Of Duo-Cone Floating Seals" in this module for
further information.

4. Use tool (A) to install Duo-Cone seal (6).

5. Use tool (B) to install Duo-Cone seal (7).

Bearing notches properly positioned over balls (details A and B).

NOTE: There is a notch located in the inner race of bearing cones (14) and (13). When
properly positioned, the notches in bearing cones (14) and (13) fit over a ball that is
inserted in each of two holes in the axle housing. The ball and notch prevent the inner
race of bearings (14) and (13) from rotating on the axle shaft.

11. Install the ball used to position bearing cone (13) into the hole in the axle housing
closest to seal retainer (12).

12. Slide bearing cone (13) into position on the axle housing. Make sure it is properly
positioned and the notch of the inner race seats on the ball in the axle housing.

13. Put clean oil on the Duo-Cone seals, and put wheel assembly (1) in position on the
axle housing as shown.

14. Put a suitable support under the wheel assembly so it will not slide off the axle
housing when the hoist is removed.

15. Install the ball used to position bearing cone (14) into the hole in the axle housing
closest to the spline end of the axle housing.

16. Slide bearing cone (14) into position on the axle housing. Make sure it is properly
positioned and the notch of the inner race seats on the ball in the axle housing.

17. Use tool (C), and put ring gear and hub (15) in position on the axle housing.

18. Put hub retainer (16) in position without any shims, and install three bolts (17) evenly
spaced around the retainer. Tighten the three bolts evenly to a torque of 70 N·m (50 lb
ft).

19. Remove tooling (C) and the support from under the wheel assembly. Install the
retainer that holds the ring gear to the hub when tooling (C) was fastened.

NOTE: The brakes can be released by using the diverter valve or by using the following
procedure. If the diverter valve is to be used, see the topic, Towing in the Systems
Operation, Testing And Adjusting (Air System And Brakes) section of the Service Manual.

NOTICE

If it becomes necessary to charge the parking brake release

circuit with an outside hydraulic source, do not use over 4150
kPa (600 psi). More than 4150 kPa (600 psi) can damage seals
and other parts in the circuit.

20. The following procedure can be used to release the brakes so the wheel can be
turned.

a. Disconnect tube (19) from the elbow, and remove the elbow from the brake housing.

b. Install tooling (D) in place of the elbow.

c. Loosen adapter (18), and put pressure in the brake with tooling (D) until oil comes out
of the hole in the adapter. When oil comes out of the hole, tighten the adapter.

d. Put a pressure of 4138 kPa (600 psi) in the brake with tooling (D) to release the brake.

21. Rotate the wheel assembly while tightening the three bolts that are holding hub
retainer (16). Tighten the three bolts evenly again to a torque of 70 N·m (50 lb ft).

22. Use an outside micrometer, and measure the thickness of hub retainer (16). Make a
note of this thickness.

23. Use a depth micrometer as shown, and measure the distance from the surface of the
hub retainer to the end of the axle housing. Do this in several places, and find the
average distance. Make a note of this average distance.

https://sis2.cat.com/#/service-detail?
serialNumber=4XJ&ieSystemControlNumber=SENR56060006&mediaNumber=SENR5606&infoType=-1&hideDocumentStructure=false
24. Subtract the thickness of the hub retainer found in Step 20 from the average distance
found in Step 21. This is the distance between the axle housing and the hub retainer.

25. Add 0.13 mm (.005 in) to the distance between the hub retainer and the axle housing
found in Step 22. This is the thickness of shims (20) required to go between the hub
retainer and the axle housing.

26. Put a suitable support under the wheel assembly so it will not slide off the axle
housing when the hub retainer is removed.

27. Remove the three bolts and hub retainer (16).

28. Put shims (20) and hub retainer (16) in position, and install the bolts that hold them.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 254 ± 14 N·m (185 ± 10 lb ft) while turning the wheel
assembly.

29. Remove tooling (D), and install the elbow in the brake housing. Connect tube (19) to
the elbow.

30. Check the oil level of the brakes. See the Maintenance Manual for the correct level
and fill procedure.

End By:

a. install final drive carrier

b. install rear tires and rims

Remove Rear Axle Housing

Start By:

a. remove service and parking brake *

*Refer to the Vehicle Systems Disassembly & Assembly Module for further information.

1. Install tooling (A) with one 3/4" - 10 NC x 2 1/2 in (64 mm) long bolt (2) with one nut
and one 5/8" - 11 NC x 1 1/2 in (38 mm) long bolt (4) as shown.

3. Use brake line guard (1) as shown to lift brake release line (3) out of the way of the
nuts that hold the axle housing to the differential housing assembly. The weight of the
rear axle housing is 667 kg (1470 lb).

4. Remove rear axle housing (5).

5. Remove O-ring seal (6) from the inner side of the axle housing.

Install Rear Axle Housing

1. Make sure all the contact surfaces of the differential housing assembly and the rear
axle housing are free of oil and grease before assembly.

2. Install the O-ring seal on the inner side of the axle housing. Put a thin layer of lubricant
on the seal.

3. Install tooling (A) as shown, with one 3/4" - 10 NC 2 1/2 (64 mm) in long bolt, with one
nut (3) and one 5/8" - 11 NC x 1/2 (38 mm) in long bolt (4).

4. Lift brake release line (1), and make a support for it with brake line guard (2) as shown.

5. Fasten a hoist to tool (A), and install the rear axle housing in position on the studs of
the differential housing assembly.

6. Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the nuts and on the washers.

7. Install the nuts and washers on the studs, and tighten the nuts to a torque of 710 ± 25
N·m (525 ± 18 lb ft).

8. Remove the hoist and tooling (A).

End By:
