Hi everyone! Today we are going to be talking about trigonometric ratios. Trigonometry

is from the Greek words: trigonon meaning triangle and metron meaning measure.

Let’s review some important triangle terms. The hypotenuse is the longest side of a
right triangle and it is always the side across from the right angle. Theta, which looks
like a zero with a horizonal line through it, is a Greek letter used to represent an angle.
Opposite is the leg opposite, or across from, theta. Adjacent is the leg that is next to
angle theta. It is important to remember that the Hypotenuse can be opposite or
adjacent to theta.

There are three trigonometric ratios. Sine which is abbreviated S-I-N, cosine
abbreviated C-O-S, and tangent abbreviated T-A-N. Sine of theta is equal to opposite
over hypotenuse which is referring to the sides. Cosine of theta is equal to adjacent
over hypotenuse. and Tangent of theta is equal to opposite over adjacent.

Some people remember the trig ratios by creating a mnemonic for SOH-CAH-TOA. That
is sine, opposite, hypotenuse- cosine, adjacent, hypotenuse- tangent, opposite,
adjacent. The mnemonic I like to use is Some Old Hippie, Caught Another Hippie,
Tripping On Avocados. Try creating your own mnemonic!
