Part – A (compulsory)

Answer the following (4 X5 =20 Marks)

1) Distinguish between intensive property and extensive property with

suitable examples
2) State Kelvin Plank statement & Clausius statements of second law of
thermodynamics
3) Draw p-v diagram and T-s diagram of dual combustion Cycle
4) What are the advantages of water tube boilers compared to smoke
tube boilers
5) What are the various classification of air compressors?

Part – B

(Answer any 5 out of 7 questions : 10 x 5 Marks = 50 marks)

6) (a) What is polytropic process ? How does it differ from an

adiabatic process. (4 marks)

(b) A reversible engine is supplied with heat from two constant

temperature sources at 900 degK and 600deg K and rejects heat to a
constant temperature sink at 300 deg K. The engine develops work
equivalent to 90kJ/s and rejects heat at the rate of56 kJ/s.

Determine I. Heat supplied by each source, and

2. Thermal efficiency of the engine. (3+3)

7) 0.336 m3 of gas at 10 bar and 150°C expands adiabatically, until its
pressure is 4 bar. It is then compressed, isothermally, to its original
volume. Find the final temperature and pressure of the gas..Also
determine the change in internal energy. Take Cp = 0.996 kJ/kg K;
and Cv. = 0.703 kJ/kg K. (10 )

8) (a) Derive an expression for change of entropy of an isothermal

process (4)

One kg of a perfect gas is compressed according to the law

pv 1.3 =constant and the temperature is raised from 5 C to 157’C. Assuming
the characteristic gas constant R= 0275 kJ/kg K and
value of Cp= 1.045 kJ/kg K, evaluate the change of entropy.(6)

a)What are the conditions of reversibility of thermodynamic cycle ?(4)

(b) An ideal Diesel engine has piston diameter 150 mm and stroke
length 200mm. The clearance volume is 10% of the swept volume.
Determine the compression ratio and the air standard efficiency of the
engine if the cut -off takes place at 6 percent of the stroke (6)

10)(a) Explain the working principle of four stroke petrol engine with
neat sketches (5)

(b) A four cylinder four-stroke cycle petrol engine is to be designed

to give a brake power of 185 kW at 35 r.p.s. The stroke bore ratio is
to be 1.5 to 1. Assuming a mechanical efficiency of 75% and indicated
mean effective pressure of 830 kPa, determine the required bore and
stroke of the engine? (5)
11) (a)Define volumetric efficiency of air compressor? (2)
(b) What are the factors affecting Volumetric Efficiency(3)

(b) Air is compressed from 1 bar to 7 bar in two stages instead of

single stage from 1 bar to 7 bar.The index of compression is
1.35 in both the cases and assume optimum pressure and
perfect intercooling in two stage compression What is the
percentage of work saved? (5 )

12) A steam jet enters the row of blades with a velocityof 375m/sec
at an angle of 20 deg with the direction of motion of the moving
blade. If the blade speed is 165m/sec find the suitable inlet and
outlet blade angles assuming that there is no thrust on
blades. The velocity of steam passing over blades is reduced by
15%.Also determine power developed by the turbine per kg of
steam flowing over the blades per second
