ASSESSMENTS
These assessments show the differences
between a more traditional end of novel
study assessment and one that
promotes the learning process and the
options given in a UDL classroom.
"Within the context of ongoing assessment, teachers can accommodate differences in strategic networks
by providing students with multiple means for expressing what they know, such as the option to respond
by writing, speaking, drawing, creating an animation or video, or developing a multimedia presentation.
When students are using tools that are familiar and appropriate for their own styles, needs, and
preferences, they are not hindered by the medium of expression and are more likely to be able to
demonstrate what they know and know how to do."
By offering students choice in how they display their knowledge they are better able to convey what
they’ve learned in ways that make sense to them. For example, dressing up and describing a favourite
character in a novel may have far greater impact in recall of the story than regurgitating facts and details
in a multiple-choice format. By giving our students choices we can create the inclusive environment that
our students need. We can adapt and include all of our learners, creating a safe and engaging space for
all.
