Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who was born in

1469 and also the first European explorer to reach India by the
ocean. In 1497, John’s successor, King Manuel I, chose Vasco
da Gama to guide a Portuguese fleet to India, although he had
little to no experience. Vasco da Gama sailed from Lisbon on 8
July 1497 with four vessels, traveling south along the coast of
Africa. Before veering far-flung into the southern Atlantic so as
to avoid harsh currents. His fleet was finally ready around the
Cape of Good Hope at Africa’s southern tip in late November,
and he headed north along Africa’s eastern coast, stopping at
what's now called Mozambique. With the assistance of a local
navigator, Vasco da Gama was ready to cross the ocean and
reach the coast of India at Calicut in May 1498.His
achievement is taken into account as a milestone by the King
himself. Vasco da ma visited india 3 times via the oceans and
he was elected the viceroy of Portugues india. He died on 24
December 1524 in Kochi, Portugues India.
