Article 214 states that each state shall have a High Court. Total number of sanctioned judges in these courts are 1079 – 771 sanctioned for permanent Judges + 308 sanctioned for additional judges. Only 665 seats occupied. 414 seats vacant. (39% vacant) Allahabad High Court (Uttar Pradesh) has the largest sanctioned strength of 160 judges. Sikkim High Court has the smallest sanctioned strength of 3 judges. The first three High Courts in India were established in Bombay, Kolkata and Madras in 1862. Calcutta High Court is the oldest amongst the three. The latest and newest High Courts in India are the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh High Court, established in 2019. The Telangana High Court is in Hyderabad. The High in Andhra Pradesh is in Amravati. The Andhra Pradesh High Court was established by Presidential order on the 1st of January 2019. Punjab and Haryana have a common High Court in Chandigarh. Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh share a common High Court in Guwahati.
