Critical thinking: Individual Practice

Q1- What are the arguments of the DOF article?

Basically the document highlights the facts that beverages with high sugar content,

are one of the causes of the rises of obesity in the country, and cardiovascular

diseases, and how the high amount of those in the market also represent a threat

in Mexico

Q2- Which consistencies or inconsistencies did you find in the document?

Well it is well known that Mexico’s gastronomy is based on a lot of oil and greases

which are currently the biggest causes of, obesity and cardiovascular diseases, so

the text says that beverages are the main problem of this, which is not, so that’s

one of the main inconsistencies, I could find.

Q3- Which biases or error did you find in the arguments (bad arguments, fallacies,

omissions, false inferences, and deceptive statistics)?

Considering the fact that the author uses the example of high sugar beverages to

affirm that those are the ones that causes obesity, we can observe that maybe the

author is not well informed about the theme or he tries to convince us that, high

sugar beverages are actually bad for us, so probably it is just a fallacy of truth by

omission.
Q4- Can conclusions be drawn from the arguments?

Yeah, beverages with high sugar content are one of the many causes of obesity

and cardiovascular diseases in México, but just one, so in order to be a complete

document for us “the readers” the author needs to take into account the use of

more examples.

Q5-Is the person’s point of view derived from his or her research?

Yeah, and we can observe that, at the moment that the author affirms that the high

sugar beverages are the main cause of obesity, and the way the author addresses

this situations, makes us realize that his or her point of view is the result of that

investigation.

Q6- How are you ordering your own arguments (to avoid being unfocused)?

I’m always unfocused because that’s how my mind works, but in order to focus on

certain stuff, or order my arguments, I base my studies or investigations, on my

own personal experience, so I can prioritize or discard what I consider useful or

useless, after that it is just a matter of organization.

Conclusion:

Adding taxes on beverages won’t stop the Mexican market, Mexican families

thanks to their culture, tend to accompany their meals with soda, or at least

beverages with high sugar content, so adding extra taxes, won’t stop them, it will

only make them spend more.
