Subject: Letter of Recommendation for Edward Chanquin

1. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend Edward Chanquin to your Scholarship Program or Institute of Higher Learning.
Edward is a very intelligent and resourceful young man who has a strong desire to study Engineering or Computer Science
at the university level. I’ve known Edward for six years. He has been a three-year member of my FIRST LEGO League
competition team, has participated on my high school FIRST Robotics Competition Team, was a participant on our
SkillsUSA tech team and also a participant of my schools MESA Club (Math, Science, Engineering & Achievement).
Moreover, he was a five-year member of my Manufacturing, Robotics & Engineering Academy. He has taken the PLTW
engineering courses Design & Modeling, Automation & Robotics at the middle level and Introduction to Engineering
Design, Principles of Engineering and Aerospace Engineering at the high school level. As a student in these high school
engineering courses, Edward was taught the foundations of the Engineering Design Process, CAD, Systems Engineering,
the importance of maintaining an Engineering Notebook, RobotC programming, work place environmental safety
competencies, and the application of mathematics and physics to real world applications through designing, prototyping,
manufacturing and building robots and other mechanisms. He has learned the importance of project management, time
management, being a team player, communication skills, as well as presentation skills. Edward also learned work place
competency skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and creativity as he worked his way through PLTW
engineering challenges.

2. Edward has expressed a strong desire to pursue a career in the Engineering field or possibly in Computer Science. He has
taken rigorous courses such as the Capstone PLTW Aerospace Engineering Course, PLTW Honors Principles of
Engineering, AP World History, AP English Literature, Honors Pre-Calculus, and is currently taking AP Calculus and other
rigorous courses remotely. Edward’s high gpa speaks volumes because he has made academics a priority in life and has
made the Principle’s Honor Roll 5 out of 6 semesters. He has shown his versatility by balancing a demanding academic
schedule and participating on the Boys Varsity Volleyball Team for three years. Moreover, Edward has volunteered a
significant amount of hours teaching middle school students how to build and program robots for competitions, providing
Algebra and Geometry tutoring to both middle school and high school students. Edward is a pleasant young man who gets
along with anyone. He is honest, works extremely hard, and not afraid to ask questions. Edward is a great role model for
our underserved and disadvantaged students at our school and within the community. All of this success despite living in a
community where about 78% of families live at or below the national poverty level, crime has been an issue, and many in
the community continue to fight for social justice and equality. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend Edward Chanquin to
your Scholarship Program or institute of higher learning.

Sincerely,

Darryl Newhouse
