Strauss don quixote additional notes

1) From the scores, the solo cello part is marked with the cello section or a staff right above
the cello tutti sections, indicating that the solo player is not necessarily taking on a
concerto-like solo role, and should be the section leader taking on the solo materials.
2) There are passages that indicate soli, therefore including members of the cello sections to
play with the soloist.
3) There are passages marked "ohne solo", indicating the cello tutti play without the solo
cello.
4) However, most of the variation have solo cello materials that make the soloist unable to
play tutti parts simultaneously. Although there are variations that don't have much solo
material, the soloist would also play with the section, these sections are usually marked
"violone alle"
5) The first performance has the solo cellist sitting with the orchestra, but since then soloists
have been brought in specifically to perform the work sitting at a soloist position away
from the section. Paul Tortiler, the ultimate story teller, advocated for soloist sitting
position and thus started the trend.
