Before carrying out any testing, checks should be made for the location of any buried cables, earth conductors or metal pipe work. These would adversely affect the accuracy of the readings taken, particularly if they are parallel to the meastirement traverse. ‘The measurements to be performed is using the Wenner method, as advocated by the IEEE Std.81-2012. Figure | shows the general measurement arrangement. ‘The four earth rods should be driven into the ground in a straight line, ata distance “a” metres apart and driven to a depth of “d” metres. Array centre foc General Manger Ege) ‘Wnsmison OMson [exw resren Figure 1: The Wenner Soil Resistivity Measurement Array The four rods should be connected to the tester, with the outer rods connected to the C-1 and C-2 terminals, and the inner rods to the P-1 and P-2 terminals. When the instrument is switched on, there will be an apparent resistance reading on the meter, which is “R” Ohms. The apparent soil resistivity (p) is then given by 2zaR Om. Ifthe value is varying significantly, this may be due to interference, high contact resistance at the test rods, a damaged test lead or the reading being at the lower limit of the instruments measuring capability. If, after investigating the above, the reading is still changing by more than 5%, record the maximum and minimum values over an interval ofa few minutes, ealeulate the average and then proceed with the rest of the measurements. For the proposed substation, the measurements traverse is shown in Figure 2 DOS Engineering Sdn Bhd 3 Contract no: TNB 236/2016 Contract title: KERJA-KERJA PMU 132/33KV TANJUNG TOKONG (2X90MVA), PULAU PINANG (and P2 leads, where C2 probeis upto 90mfrom ‘he earth tester Figure 2: Proposed measurements traverse The earth tester is located at an arbitrary location in the centre of the area to be measured. The test leads for PL, Cl, P2 and C2 are then extended diagonally from the earth tester towards the comers of the area, where the maximum distance of C1 and C2 probes from the earth tester is 90m, while for PI and P2 probes it is 30m, The choice of the directions of the current and potential traverses are made such that the maximum current probe distance of up to 90m is achieved, and also avoiding any known buried metallic objects which may be present at the proposed site, ‘The apparent resistance measurements are then taken for a range of Wenner spacings (a). These Wenner spacings, and their corresponding distances of potential (P) and current (C) probes, are shown in Table 1. ‘Table 1: Wenner spacings ~apparent resistance measurement results are written in column RI [Spacing ta] w2iP) | Sarz(c) [Ri 4 05. 45 as | 075 | 225 7 : : WER COMMENT 3 15 45 Eyrcnm as | 225 | 675 tevse ano resveot 6 3 9 sgopunowony eo |as_| 135 A ae 135_| 675 | 2025 sis, asta 18 2 27 Te monAdtao REPT BM AD'S for coer tara been) 20 sas [405 tance Don 38 386 54 Taeaaame aT 54 2 at 1 ecansreed at aceptace of Varaon fr curratorsin andlor 2 = 2 Reeve Contac fom any Contac Corpor oresporsies DCS Engineering Sdn Bhd 4 Contract no: TNB 236/2016 Contract title; KERJA-KERJA PMU 132/33KV TANJUNG TOKONG (2X90MVA), PULAU PINANG ‘The set of apparent resistance obtained can know be interpreted to form an electrical soil model for the whole substation area. However, in order to check this set of measurements against possible irregularities in the measured soil, e.g, presence of buried metallic objects, a further measurement traverse is performed at a 90" angle to the initial traverse. This additional traverse is also recommend by the IEEE Std. 81. Hence, assuming the ire2, the additional traverse is shown in Figure 3. itial traverse adopted is the one shown in Fi + ACCESS Direction of C1 ‘and PI leads, where Cl probes F) Location ofthe p10 90mfrom fs 48) earth tester atthe fezntreof the area fit tobetested surements traverse, at a 90° angle to the initial traverse, to ‘check for irregularities Software program will be used for carrying out the detailed calculations, based upon data from the above readings, to provide a “best-fit”, representative soil model for the area, consisting of A number horizontal layers having different resistivity values.
