Philippine Water Resources Region

Introduction
In spite of the abundance and wide variety of its water resources, the Philippines still confronts
serious problems concerning water quality, accessibility, water shortage and temporal
distribution.
Sources of Water Supply
Philippines, as reported by Philippine Environment Monitor, is endowed with rich natural
resources, including water, which is essential for the country’s economic development.

Region I
Abra River - The Abra River is the seventh largest river system in the Philippines in terms of
watershed size. It has an estimated drainage area of 5,125 square kilometres and a length of 178
kilometres from its source in the vicinity of Mount Data in Benguet province.

Region II
1. Cagayan River - The Cagayan River, also known as the Rio Grande de Cagayan, is the
longest river and the largest river by discharge volume of water in the Philippines. It has a total
length of approximately 505 kilometres and a drainage basin covering 27,753 square kilometres.
2. Abulug River - The Abulog or Abulug is the 9th largest river
system in the Philippines in terms of watershed size. It has an estimated drainage area of 3,372
square kilometres and a length of 175 kilometres from its source in the mountains of Apayao in
the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Region III
1. Pampanga River - Pampanga River is the second largest river on the island of Luzon in the
Philippines and the country's fifth longest river. It is in the Central Luzon region and traverses
the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, and Nueva Ecija.
2. Agno River - Agno River or Pangasinan River is a river on the island of Luzon in the
Philippines. Traversing the provinces of Benguet and Pangasinan, it is one of the largest river
systems in the country with a drainage area of 5,952 square kilometres.
Region IV
Pasig River - The Pasig River is a river in the Philippines that connects Laguna de Bay to
Manila Bay. Stretching for 25 kilometres, it bisects the Philippine capital of Manila and its
surrounding urban area into northern and southern halves. The total drainage basin of Pasig
River, including the basin of Laguna de Bay, covers 4,678 square kilometres.

Region V
Bicol River - The Bicol River is the eighth largest river in the Philippines in terms of drainage
basin size with an estimated catchment area of 3,770 square kilometres. The river drains the
southwestern part of the island of Luzonand passes through Camarines Sur province in the Bicol
Region.

Region VI
1. Ilog – Hilabangan River Basin - is considered as one of the largest river basins in the
country. In 1990, it was declared as a Watershed Forest Reserve to protect, sustain, and improve
the water yield of the river and to provide mechanisms that would restrict the improper and
disruptive use of forset and land resources.
2. Panay River - Panay River is the longest river in Panay island, Philippines, with a total length
of approximately 152 kilometres long, with a drainage basin area of 2,181square kilometres.
3. Jalaur River - Jalaur River, also known as Jalaud River, is the second longest river in Panay
island and the second largest by drainage basin, only Panay River in Capiz has the longest and
the largest river system in Panay. Jalaur river ranked 17th largest river system in the Philippines
in terms of drainage basin size

Region VII
Inabanga River - is the largest river in Bohol , Philippines.It is 25 kilometres (16 mi) long and
up to 7 to 10 metres (23 to 33 ft) deep at its mouth at the town of Inabanga.

Region VIII
Subangdaku River - is the largest river in Southern Leyte, Philippines. It drains into the Sogod
Bay at the municipality of Sogod. The river's name means "big river" or "wide river" in
Cebuano.
Region IX
1. Curuan River - Suba Curuan River sa Pilipinas. Nahimutang ni sa lalawigan sa Province of
Zamboanga Del Sur ug rehiyon sa Zamboanga Peninsula,  sa habagatang bahin sa nasod, 800 km
sa habagatan sa Dakbayan sa Manila ang ulohan sa nasod.

Region X
1. Tagoloan River - The Tagoloan River is the 13th largest river system in the Philippines in
terms of watershed size, as classified by the National Water Resources Board. It has an estimated
drainage area of 1,704 square kilometres covering the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis
Oriental.
2. Agusan River - Agusan River is a river in the Philippines, located in the north-eastern part of
Mindanao island, draining majority of the Caraga region and some parts of Compostela Valley
province.
3. Cagayan de Oro River - is one of the rivers draining the northern central part of the island of
Mindanao in the Philippines. The river has its headwaters in the Kalatungan Mountain Range
and Kitanglad Mountain Range found in the central part of the province of Bukidnon.

Region XI
1. Davao River - The Davao River catchment is the third largest river catchment on the southern
Philippines island of Mindanao. It drains an area of over 1,700 square kilometres with a river
length of 160 kilometres.
2. Buayan - Malungun River - The Buayan-Malungon River Basin is considered as an allied
sub-basin of Mindanaoriver basin. It has an area of approximately 150,509.79 ha. It is located in
Southern andCentral Regions of Mindanao. In the east, it is bounded by Mt. Matutum in
Malungon, anddrains to its outlet, the Sarangani Bay. Buayan and Malungon rivers are its
maintributaries. Buayan River, which originates from Mt. Matutum at the western side, is
theriver basin’s main water body. Several rivers particularly within General Santos City,South
Cotabato, and Alabel, Sarangani also serve and tributaries to be delivered toSarangani Bay
3. Tagum – Libuganon River – Tagum – Libuganon River Basin (TLRB) has an area of 2,374
km2 which covers the provinces of Davao del Norte and Agusan del Sur.

Region XII
1. Rio Grande de Mindanao - The Rio Grande de Mindanao, also known as the Mindanao
River, is the second largest river system in the Philippines, located on the southern island of
Mindanao. It has a drainage area of 23,169 km², draining themajority of the central and eastern
portion of the island, with a total length of approximate.
2. Agus River - Agus River is a river that flows for 36.5 kilometres from Lanao Lake to Iligan
Bay, Philippines. It cuts through the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte.
Settlements along the banks of the river include the City of Marawi, the Municipality of
Linamon and the City of Iligan.
