ILLEGAL DRUGS

- are substances, which an individual, by law, is not allowed to possess, use or distribute. The
penalties attached to such use as associated with illegal drugs are dependent on the type of
drug, the location in which the individual was arrested or detained, the quantity of the drug
and the presence of prior arrests for a similar offense.

COMMONLY USED ILLEGAL DRUGS

I. CANNABINOIDS
- any of a group of closely related compounds which include cannabinol and the active
constituents of cannabis.

 MARIJUANA
- refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis sativa or
Cannabis indica plant. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical THC and other
similar compounds.

 HASHNISH

II. OPIODS
- are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. Medically
they are primarily used for pain relief, including anesthesia.
 HEROIN
- also known as diamorphine among other names, is an opioid most commonly used as a
recreational drug for its euphoric effects.

- street names: Diacetylmorphine: smack, horse, brown sugar, dope, H, junk, skag, skunk,
white horse, China white; cheese (with OTC cold medicine and antihistamine).

 OPIUM
- is dried latex obtained from the seed capsules of the opium poppy Papaver somniferum.

- street names: Laudanum, paregoric: big O, black stuff, block, gum, hop

III. STIMULANTS
- is an overarching term that covers many drugs including those that increase activity of
the central nervous system and the body, drugs that are pleasurable and invigorating, or
drugs that have sympathomimetic effects.

 COCAINE
- is a strong stimulant most frequently used as a recreational drug.

 AMPHETAMINE
- is a central nervous system stimulant that is used in the treatment of attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy, and obesity.

- street names: Biphetamine, Dexedrine: bennies, black beauties, crosses, hearts, LA
turnaround, speed, truck drivers, uppers

 METHAMPHETAMINE
- a synthetic drug with more rapid and lasting effects than amphetamine, used illegally as a
stimulant and as a prescription drug to treat narcolepsy and maintain blood pressure.

IV. CLUB DRUGS


- wave of new drugs has become increasingly popular with today's adolescents and young
adults. These drugs are commonly known as club drugs, a term originating from the rave
phenomenon. Many club drugs are also called designer drugs.
 MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine)
- commonly known as ecstasy or molly, is a psychoactive drug primarily used as a recreational
drug.

 FLUNITRAZEPAM
- also known as Rohypnol among other names, is a benzodiazepine used to treat severe
insomnia and assist with anesthesia.

- street names: Rohypnol (date rape drug): forget-me pill, Mexican Valium, R2, roach, Roche,
roofies, roofinol, rope, rophies

 GHB (Gamma Hydroxybutyrate)


- is abused by teens and young adults at bars, parties, clubs and “raves” (all night dance
parties), and is often placed in alcoholic beverages.

ecstasy, soap, scoop, goop, liquid X

V. DISSOCIATIVE DRUGS
- are a class of hallucinogen which distort perceptions of sight and sound and produce
feelings of detachment – dissociation – from the environment and self.

 KETAMINE
- a medication mainly used for starting and maintaining anesthesia. It induces a trance-like
state while providing pain relief, sedation, and memory loss.

 PCP AND ANALOGS (Phencyclidine)


- also known as angel dust among other names, is a drug used for its mind-altering effects.
PCP may cause hallucinations, distorted perceptions of sounds, and violent behavior.

- street names: Phencyclidine: angel dust, boat, hog, love boat, peace pill

 SALVIA DIVINORUM
- a plant species with transient psychoactive properties when its leaves are consumed by
chewing, smoking or as a tea.

- street names: Salvia, Shepherdess’s Herb, Maria Pastora, magic mint, Sally-D
 DEXTROMETHORPHAN
- is a medication most often used as a cough suppressant in over-the-counter cold and cough
medicines. It is sold in syrup, tablet, spray, and lozenge forms.

VI. HALLUCINOGENS
- is a psychoactive agent which most likely causes hallucinations, perceptual anomalies, and
other substantial subjective changes in thoughts, emotion, and consciousness. The common
types of hallucinogens are psychedelics, dissociatives and deliriants.

 LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide)


- also known as acid, is a hallucinogenic drug. Effects typically include altered thoughts,
feelings, and awareness of one's surroundings. Many users see or hear things that do not
exist.

 MESCALINE
- is a hallucinogenic drug that occurs naturally in certain cacti plants native to the southwest
United States, Mexico, and South America.

 PSILOCYBIN
- is a naturally occurring psychedelic substance that can be found in a variety of different
mushrooms, commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms.”

VII. OTHER COMPOUNDS

 ANABOLIC STEROIDS
- are synthetic substances similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. They do have
legitimate medical uses. Sometimes doctors prescribe anabolic steroids to help people with
certain kinds of anemia and men who don't produce enough testosterone on their own.

 INHALANTS
- are mostly used by young kids and teens and are the only class of substance used more by
younger than by older teens.

- street names: Solvents (paint thinners, gasoline, glues); gases (butane, propane, aerosol
propellants, nitrous oxide); nitrites (isoamyl, isobutyl, cyclohexyl): laughing gas, poppers,
snappers, whippets

COMMONLY ABUSED ILLEGAL DRUGS

 METHAMPHETAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE (SHABU)


- is found to have harmful effects to the brain. It changes how the brain functions.
- Studies have shown that methamphetamine abusers have reduced motor skills and
impaired verbal learning as a result of alterations in the activity of the dopamine, a
neurotransmitter involved in reward, motivation, experience of pleasure and motor
function.

 CANNABIS SATIVA (MARIJUANA)


- impairs a person's ability to form new memories and to shift focus. Its active component,
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also disrupts coordination and balance, posture, and reaction
time (experience commonly referred to as “spacing out”).
- reduces a person’s capacity to learn, carry-out complicated tasks, participate in sports,
driving and operating other machineries. Studies also show that marijuana use can lead to
lung cancer and other problems in the respiratory and immune systems.

 INHALANTS
- are similar to that of alcohol, including slurred speech, lack of coordination, euphoria and
dizziness. Inhalant abusers may also experience lightheadedness, hallucinations, and
delusions.

propellants, nitrous oxide); nitrites (isoamyl, isobutyl, cyclohexyl): laughing gas, poppers,

 ECSTASY
- is a psychoactive drug primarily used as a recreational drug. The desired effects include
altered sensations, increased energy, empathy, and pleasure.
