Vaclav Talich Discography (v0.04a)

About Vaclav Talich:
Talich is the artist who did the most to gain world recognition for the Czech Philharmonic.
Originally he wanted to be a violinist; at the Prague Conservatory he was a pupil of Jan Marak
and the famous Otakar Sevcik. After his initial experiences with the conductor's baton in front of
an amateur chamber orchestra he left for Odessa and Tiflis, where he made his final decision for
the conductor's career. In order to be perfectly professionally prepared, he sought out a teacher at
the conservatory in Lipsko; he also acquired valuable knowledge as an assistant to the famous
Arthur Nikisch. In the meantime he also worked as the conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic
in Ljubljana and after his return to Bohemia accepted the significant engagement of opera
conductor in the Western Bohemian metropolis of Plzen. When he came to the Czech
Philharmonic at the age of 34, he was endowed not only with considerable professional
erudition, but also with a matchless natural musicality, which explains his rapid and stunning
artistic ascent. For his first concert with the Czech Philharmonic on December 17, 1917 he
studied the works of the Czech composers Otakar Ostrcil, Viteslav Novak and Antonin Dvorak,
and this seemed to mark the whole of his future artistic orientation. On October 30, 1918 he
brought off the premiere of the demanding composition Zrani (Ripening) by his friend Josef Suk
and this unique success contributed to his becoming principal conductor of the orchestra in the
following year. Talich amassed the best Czech musicians in the Czech Philharmonic and through
demanding, systematic work created a first-class ensemble. Over the next few years the Czech
Philharmonic's interpretive style -- characterized by combining the tonal beauty of the string
section with rich, perfectly balanced wind and percussion sections -- became famous. Talich
undertook numerous concert tours abroad with his orchestra, his artistry was universally valued,
and he frequently made guest appearances with other ensembles. From 1931-1934 he was the
head of the Stockholm Philharmonic; after his return to Prague he took on the artistic direction of
the National Theater Opera in addition to his responsibilities at the Czech Philharmonic. During
the Second World War and the German occupation he displayed extraordinary personal courage
by introducing Smetana's symphonic cycle Ma Vlast (My Country), but despite this he was
unjustly persecuted after the liberation. In 1949 he was forced to leave for Bratislava, where he
remained in the upper echelons of the Slovak Philharmonic until 1952. After returning to Prague
he lived to see only a partial rehabilitation of his character, although his last concerts with the
Czech Philharmonic were received by the public with spontaneous, demonstrative enthusiasm.
Talich's artistry as a conductor is preserved on many recordings, beginning with Smetana's Ma
Vlast from 1929 and ending with the last masterful cuts of 1959. These unique documentations
capture the tonal colorations, freshness of expression and technical precision which were the
hallmarks of his style.

About
is a place like few others on the World Wide Web, or anywhere else for that matter. At MGOG.net,
you can find information on topics from internet investing and e-commerce to chocolate and chile peppers
(the capsiacin producing relatives of tomatoes, not the menace to our ears from the early 1990s)…

not to mention classical music, including its vast resources on the Czech conducting master Vaclav
Talich… a compilation of information unparalleled anywhere.

has a strong commitment to both classical music and innovative means of distributing information
on the net. For instance, was the first site to make widely available an MP3 file of the Beethoven
composition discovered in 1999. Beyond just distributing the MP3, we set up the first (and still the
largest) discussion board where music experts, scholars, and enthusiasts can share thoughts and opinions
on this work.

This commitment to overall excellence will remain well into the next millennia!
