These slow lumbering machines brought Za fear to the hearts and minds of the enemy soldiers, These big crawling ‘monsters, spitting out machinegun fire and canon shells were created to ‘menace the trenches and attempt to break the stalemate on the Western front. However these ironclads were not invincible and had to overcome ‘many obstacles such as the crossing of wide trenches. Special devices ‘were employed for these tasks an ‘example of which was a trench crossing device, a wood and metal construction that was carried on the tanks to be dropped into the trenches 0 the tanks could cross over them ‘without become stuck. Meng has an excellent replica of the Mark V tank. A kit with excellent detail which includes a full interior. Although we decided ‘to not use or build the interior as the plan ‘was to depict the model in a muddy field with the trench crossing device on top, making its way slowly towards the enemy. The trench crossing device is moulded in plastic, while in reality it's made mostly out ‘of wood. Injection moulded kits have their its 50 we decided to rebuild it from Balsa wood and plasticard. So it would look ‘more realistic, Oca the tacks, 8 / TANKER 08 / BEASTS OF WAR ‘With the device in place, metal chains are provided by Meng tokeep it in place The lage Lniching beam is also remade with Balsa in the same way as ‘ur device 7. Measurements are taken from the origina kit parts and drawn on a piece of paper 8. Lengths of Balsa wood of the right thickness were cut to size according to our drawings 9. The pieces of Balsa are next glued in position with wood glue using the drawing as a guide. 10. When all the pieces of Balsa wood are glued together the detailing using plastcard and Evergreen profiles can begin, ths i staight forward and much teasier than it may seem. PTO rata pe LR AB BNA 1D u The Libyan Civil War, also re- ferred to asthe Libyan Revolution or 17 February Revolution, was ‘an armed conflict in 2011 in the North African county of Libya. It was fought between forces loyal ‘to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and those seeking to oust his govern- ‘ment. The war was preceded by protests in Zawiya on 8 August 2009 and finally ignited by pro- tests in Benghazi beginning on ‘Tuesday 15 February 2011, which led to clashes with security forces that fired on the crowd. The pro- tests escalated into a rebellion that spread across the country with the forces opposing Gaddafi ‘establishing an interim governing body, the National Transitional Council. The United Nations Security Council passed an intial reso- lution on 26 February freezing the assets of Gaddafi and his inner circle and restricting their travel, the matter was also referred to the International Criminal Court for investigation. In early March, Gaddafi's forces rallied, pushed eastwards, and re-took several coastal cities before reaching Benghazi. A further UN resolution authorized member states to establish and enforce a no-fly zone ‘over Libya and to use “all necessary measures" to prevent at- ‘tacks on civilians, which then turned into a bombing campaign by the forces of NATO. The Gaddafi government then announced 4-2:3. We decided to use the Tamiya TS5A, Trumpeter BTR 60 and Fril metal tracks for this project. Step or assemble the lower bull of the taking measurements, we cut a piece of real Imm metal 5 base forthe BTR 60 on the top. Step 2 was to cut the BTR 60 tothe desired shape. We assembled the 2 kts together and for the front part we used 0.5mm Alurioum sheet to finalze the shape. For the rear par (orange) we designed it and then printed i fut using 3D printer. It was a fun project and ‘quick built without any problems, 28/1 bels rejected government offers of a ceasefire and efforts by the ‘African Union to end the fighting as the plans set forth did not include the removal of Gaddafi. n August, rebel forces launched ‘an offensive on the government-held coast of Libya, taking back territory lost months before and ultimately capturing the capital city of Tripoli, Gaddafi evaded capture and loyalists engaged in a rearguard campaign. On 16 September 2011, the National Transi- ‘tional Council was recognized by the United Nations as the legal representative of Libya, replacing the Gaddafi government. Mua- ‘mmar Gaddafi remained at large until 20 October 2011, when he ‘was captured and killed in Site. The National Transitional Council “declared the liberation of Libya" and the official end of the war ‘on 23 October 2011. During our research on the Libyan civil war we found 3 photo of a tank which was a combination TSS and BTR6O chasis, its name was (DRAKULA). Next step was to add some layers of earth colored paint. Just start, with a dark brown and continue by lighter layers until you achieve a dusty looking ground, Now it was time fora very creative part that we eal like. Just add Siferent plants, some grass and Shrubs... we avoided adding grass to he center part of the base, as ths wil be partly hidden by the model. We sed diferent products from paper plants, etched plans and synthetic products. Certainly, these parts wil also receive their layers of coor. ust Keep it dust, he scene wil bein sume, beside a dusty road, After some final touches with diferent ‘teen hues on the various pl we added some more deal, Ike an empty MIG box and the big road sign This adds the required height and a nice background for the scene. 28, It's a completely diferent part fof the hobby to paint figures and we ally enjoy this part. I's especialy fenjovable when we use high quality Figures such as this one from Alpine. Here's the complete "crew" for this tie vgnette. The sting guy comes from Rayal Model andthe two standing quys ae fom Alpine. Some ‘of them got new heads from the Hoenet range. M4843 | Patton Vietnam Jungle Beast ‘Vietnam subjects are rather rare in the modelling world ftseems to be a forgotten war, possibly because itis politically a sensitive subject. Nevertheless modellers are no politicians and some interesting models can be built ‘rom that era, such as Dragon's M48a3. It’s been on the market for several years ‘and has some flaws, but, with some aftermarket stuff this can easily be rectified. For instance the missing searchlight isa big factor so we opted to use an update set from Def Models containing not only a highly detailed search light but also a new mantet, ‘with canvas cover for the gun, cast in high quality resin. The vinyl tracks included are also not really satisfying so these were also replaced by a set of workable tracks from Def Models in cooperation with AFV-Club. M48's in ‘Nam’ did carry alot of stowage ‘and thus we needed that on our model; Legend’ stowage set came to rescue with 2a rather big set of stowage especially designed for this kt. Finally a crew set, in the ‘orm of the classic Verlinden Vietnam tank Crew was used for the human touch. We also had plans fora small base to present our model as so we had to look for jungle vegetation. Little Belgian company Joefix has a rather large array of jungle plants in many variations so that problem was solved too. With everything gathered it was time fa get the finger out and get building. We also faced another challenge, how bbest to tackle the typical dark Olive Drab used during the Vietnam War and the so ‘typical orange dust For the olive drab we decided to scale down the color and make itlighter as the real color would be too dark for a scale model and to produce effects ‘from it. Nobody uses the real German Grey right? For us it the same case for the Olive rab. The orange dust is another challenge. To make sure It doesn't look too much like ‘rust we opted to make the dust more yellowish with an orange tone. Let's find out how this turned out! 49 +.
