In fahrenheit 451 the book shows two levels of censorship.

There is censorship by the people or

society and censorship by the government. Censorship by the people are things that individuals
censor when interacting with each other, while as censorship by the government are things that
the government hides from society. People who have knowledge of books and things like history
of the world tend to hide it from others. On page 12 people are censoring things in society by
saying “No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it.” This is seen as censorship
because it is a lie. Fires used to be put out not started but no one in society wants people to
know this so a lot of people think a fireman's job has always been to set fires not prevent them.
The government's way of censorship is to ban books and let society be simple minded people
because they don't want people to have their own knowledge or opinions. “Cram them full of
noncombustible data , chock them so damned full of ‘facts’ they feel stuffed, but absolutely
‘brilliant’ with information. Then they'll feel like they're thinking.” (64) The government makes
people think that they have knowledge by manipulating them and filling their heads with useless
information for instance things like the Denham's Dentifrice jingle. When people are hearing this
useless information they have no time of their own to actually think about things and the stuff
thats going on around them. Both levels censor things for reasons of their own benefit or
because things they are censoring can be seen as ‘harmful’ and ‘dangerous’.
