4th International Kite Festival and 2nd International Sweet Festival inaugurated by Vice President
Venkaiah Naidu in Hyderabad, Telangana
On January 13, 2019, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 4th International Kite Festival and
2nd International Sweet Festival in Hyderabad, Telangana.
i. It was organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Telangana and the Ministry of
Tourism, Government of India, as a part of Sankranthi celebrations, at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad.
ii. This year’s theme for Telangana International Kite Festival was for empowerment of the girl child: ‘Educate
girl child and she will save the world’.
iii. As many as 42 professional kite flyers from abroad and 60 from India are participating in the Kite Festival
and it witnessed participation of nearly 100 enthusiasts of kite flying from 19 different countries including
India.
iv. Moreover, sweets from 20 countries and from 25 Indian states were displayed at the Sweet Festival.
About Makar Sankranthi:
♦ It is a harvest festival, a celebration of life and vitality. It is the festival of Sun God who is often regarded as the
symbol divinity and wisdom.
♦ In south India, it is popularly called ‘Pongal’, in Punjab and Haryana it is called ‘Lohri’, in Assam it is called
‘Bihu’ and ‘Khichdi festival’ in Bihar.

9th Hyderabad literary festival held in Hyderabad


On 25th January 2019, 9th Hyderabad literary festival(HLF) conducted in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It is a 3
day annual event organized by ‘Hyderabad Literary Trust’ in association with the Government of Telangana.
Key Points
i.China is the focus country in the 9th edition of Hyderabad literary festival (HLF).Gujarati was the language in
focus for HLF 2019.
ii.The literary festival began in January 25. It gave special tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in his 150th birth
anniversary year.
iii.The event will pay special attention to Gujarati keeping an eye on its tradition on each edition of the festival.
iv. The logo of HLF 2019 released on the inaugural day. The event will also pay tribute to Mrinalini Sarabhai
and KaifiAzmy to mark their birth centenaries.
China was the focus country at the 9th Hyderabad Literacy festival
China’s Culture, Art and Literature was the focus of 9th edition of the prestigious Hyderabad Literacy Festival.

Secunderabad Railway Station: the first Railway station to hoist Tricolour National flag on a 100 feet
tall pole under Railway’s order
On January 2, 2019, Secunderabad Railway Station, in Hyderabad, became the first railway station of South
Central Railway (SCR) zone to hoist a huge tricolour on a 100-foot tall pole.

i. This was done according to the Railway Board’s order to hoist the national flag at 75 A1 category railway
stations.Kacheguda, Hyderabad became the 2nd and 3rd railway Stations to hoist the100-foot tall pole.
ii. The flag would be guarded by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
iii. Furthermore according to the order, SCR has taken the initiative to hoist the National Flag at 2 other ‘A1’
category Railway Stations they are Vijaywada and Tirupati.

Telangana to set up ‘Save Tiger Protection Force’


On January 22, 2019,The Telangana government decided to form a ‘State Tiger Protection Force'(STPF)
committee to save the Big cat population in the State.State Forest Protection Committee headed by chief
Secretary S.K Joshi has decided to form STPF.

i. The State and Central government will share the cost of the ‘State Tiger Protection Force'(STPF) with 112
members headed by the assistant conservator of the forest on40:60 basis.
ii. They are organised to protect the tiger population in the areas of Amarabad and Kawal tiger
reserves. iii. Fund amount of 2.25cr was also sanctioned to protect the tigers and to prevent forest fire
accidents

Agri-Vision 2019, a two-day conference on ‘Envisioning Agro Solutions for Smart and Sustainable
Agriculture’ at Hyderabad
On 17th January 2019, Vice-President of India Shri Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 2-days Agri-Vision 2019
conference on ‘envisioning Agro-solutions for smart and Sustainable Agriculture” in Hyderabad,
Telangana. The conference was concluded on 18th January 2019.

Key Points
i. The Agro-vision 2019 conference was jointly organized by the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State
Agricultural University (PJTSAU), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Cornell University, USA.
ii. Vice-Chancellor of PJTSAU, Dr V Praveen Rao chaired a Panel discussion on “Technology in Agri
Entrepreneurship: Success stories and experiences from the progressive farmers”.
iii. Dr.TrilochanMohapatra, Director General of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) chaired a
session on “Post-harvest management and value addition of foods: Role of Farmer Producer’s
organization (FPOs) in improving Market Access” on 18th January 2019.

Justice T B N Radhakrishnan sworn in as Chief Justice of Telangana HC; Justice Praveen Kumar as the
acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court
On January 1, 2019, Justice ThottathilBhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the Chief Justice of
the Telangana High Court.
i. His oath was administered by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan.
ii. After that the CJ of Telengana HC administered the oath of office to 12 justices of Telangana High Court.
iii. He had been serving as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for both the states of
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Other News:
Governor Narasimhan also administered oath to Justice Praveen Kumar as the acting Chief Justice of Andhra
Pradesh High Court in Vajaywada.
Background:
♦As per the Supreme Court’s directions, the existing high court in Hyderabad was bifurcated as per demands of
the advocates and legal fraternity for a separate high court for Telangana.
♦The High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad had been serving as common high court of the two states since
June 2014 when Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated to carve out Telangana.
♦High Court of Andhra Pradesh was established by December 31, 2018, in state capital of Amaravati.

Online inter-state trade through the e-NAM portal started


On 19th January 2019, the inter-state trade through e-NAM was initiated with the first trade of 8.46 quintal of
groundnut between a farmer from GadwalMandi in Telangana and a trader from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.
Key Points
i. The e-NAM, a pan India electronic trading portal aims to network the existing physical regulated wholesale
market also known as APMC market thorough a virtual platform in order to create a unified national market for
agricultural commodities.
ii. the e-NAM portal has integrated the 585 Regulated markets in 16 states and 2 Union Territories with
trading in 124 commodities on the common e-market platform.
iii. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched the e-NAM portal on 14th April 2016 in 21 Mandis across 8 states
with for trading in 24 commodities.
iv. The Government plans expand the e-NAM project and integrate 415 more mandis by Marsh 2020.

v. As of now, 2.29 crores market trades with value more than Rs 60000 crore has been initiated on the e-NAM
portal.

1st National EMRS National Sports Meet, 2019 held at Hyderabad


On 14th January 2019, Shri JaswantsinhSumanbhaiBhabhor Minister of State for Tribal Affairs launched the
1st National Level Sports Meet for the students of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) at G.M.C Balayogi
Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
Key points
i. The Minister also launched an app ‘EMRS Sports Meet’ dedicated on the
occasion.
ii. Total 1777 students comprising of 975 boys and 802 girls representing 20 States of the country are
participating in the event which is three day event till Jan.16, 2019.
iii. Shri. JualOram, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri. SudarshanBhagat, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs,
and Shri. Deepak Khandekar, Secretary, Tribal Affairs will also be present for presentation ceremony to be held
on Jan 16th 2019.
About Eklavya Model Residential Schools
i. Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) is a Government of India scheme for model residential school for
Indian tribals (Scheduled Tribes, ST) across India.
ii. It was established by the Tribal Ministry, Government of India in the year 1997-98 to ensure tribal
students get access to quality education in the remote tribal areas.
iii. Provisions of funding is through Grants under Article 275(1) of the Constitution.
iv. According to the budget 2018-19 block with more than 50% ST population and at least 20,000 tribal
persons will have an Eklavya Model Residential School by the year 2022.

1956 Olympian footballer Zulfiqar passed away at 83


On January 13, 2019, Former India and 1956 Olympian footballer, Mohammed Zulfiqaruddin, passed away
at 83 in Hyderabad.
i. He also represented India in the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games and the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia.
ii. He was the captain of Andhra Pradesh in the Santosh Trophy from 1955 to 1967.
iii. He also captained AP Police team from 1954 to 1967 and won IFA Shield, Durand Cup and Rovers Cup
tournaments.
Background:
In 1956 Olympics, India lost to Bulgaria 0-3 in the bronze-medal match in Melbourne to finish fourth, a result
considered one of the finest moments in the country’s football history.

Telangana Current Affairs – February 2019


The Proposal of Ministry of Power for higher power allocation to Home State from Under Construction
Projects of NTPC
The Cabinet Committee chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Ministry of Power to allocate
85% of Power generated to Telangana and Jharkhand from Under Construction Projects of National Thermal
Power Corporation Limited.
Key Points
i.The proposal seeks to provide 85% of power to Telangana govt. generated from Telangana Super Thermal
Power Project (4000MW) of NTPC ltd. and further 85% to Jharkhand govt. from Patratu Thermal Power Station
(4000MW) of PatratuVidyutUtpadan Nigam ltd. of NTPC ltd..
ii.Both these allocations to Telangana and Jharkhand will lay an impact to ensure the progress & sustainable
development and to improve the power scenario of the state.
iii.Both the Projects will be allocated in two phases as follows-

• Telangana project which will come up at Ramagundam in Peddapalli district. The 1st phase will
comprise 2 units of 800 MW each and 2nd phase will comprise of 3 units of 800 MW each.
• Jharkhand project will come up at Patratu in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand. The 1st phase will comprise
of 3 units of 800 MW and 2nd phase will comprise of 2 units of 800 MW.

325 children rescued under “Operation Smile” in Hyderabad


325 children including 11 girls have been rescued in Hyderabad under “Operation Smile” which was launched
on 1st January 2019.

AIM of Operation Smile: The One month long programme aims to rescue child labourers and children engaged
in begging.
Other Details
Apart from rescuing children from Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, around 100 children from Andhra
Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal have been rescued under the mission.

2 new Districts created in Telangana


On 17th February, 2019, Revenue Department of Telangana has issued a notification stating about the creation
of 2 new districts in Telangana– Mulugu and Narayanpet.
Key points
i. With the creation of 2 districts, total number of districts in Telangana has augmented to 33.
ii. District Naraynpet and Mulugi has been carved out of the
District Mahabubnagar and Bhupalapally districts respectively.

Unemployment allowance of Rs 3,000 per month proposed by KCR government in Telangana Budget
On 22nd February 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao presented a Vote-on-Account
Budget for the year 2019-20.
Key points:
i. It is an interim budget.
ii. The total expenditure is valued to be Rs 1,82,017 crore which is 4 percent higher than the previous year-
out of which there is a revenue expenditure of Rs 1,31,629 crore and a capital expenditure of Rs.32,815
crore.
iii. The estimated revenue surplus is pegged at Rs 6,564 crore and fiscal deficit is Rs 27,749 crore which
is2.81percent of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
iv. Revenues for Budget Estimate (BE)of 2019-20 of the state are valued at Rs 94,776 crore.
v. A sum of Rs 1810 crore has been allocated in the Budget to fund an unemployment allowance of Rs
3,016 per month to the eligible youth.
vi. Rs. 6,000 crores have been allocated to waive off agricultural term loans of up to Rs. 1 lakh.

2019 International Spice Conference 2019 held in Hyderabad


International Spice Conference is considered as platform for all business houses, the spice associations, the
policy makers, the farmers and the users, to connect and interact.

i. The fourth edition of this conference was held in the City of Pearls and the capital city of Telangana-
Hyderabad.
ii. The theme for the conference 2019 is ‘Challenges of Change, Redefining the Value Chain’.
iii. Third edition of this conference was held in Jaipur with the theme ‘Managing Disruptions through
Transformation and Collaboration’.

BioAsia 2019-Asia’s largest Life-sciences and healthcare forum held in Hyderabad


From 25th – 27th February 2019, the 16th edition of BioAsia 2019 -Asia’s largest biotechnology and life-
sciences forum was conducted in Hyderabad, Telangana. It was inaugurated by the Governor of Telangana –
E.S.LNarasimhan .The theme of the conference was “Life Sciences 4.0 – Disrupt the Disruption”. BioAsia is
an annual event organised by the Government of Telangana and it largely focuses on re-imagining healthcare
after technological disruptions.

i. The Partner Country for the event is South Korea. South Africa and Spain are the international partners for
the event.
Key points:
i. A Vaccine Skilling Program of Telangana Government was launched to rope in skilled professionals for the
growth of the industry.
ii. Genome Valley Excellence Award 2019was presented by the organising committee of BioAsia 2019. It was
awarded to Dr. Don W Cleveland of the University of California. The award felicitates his work in cancer
genetics.
iii. ‘Life Sciences 4.0: transforming health care in India’ was launched by EY. The report discusses the
disruptive impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) on the health care ecosystem in India.

♦ Past editions of the conference have helped in bringing in investments of about Rs.15,000 crores and
around 16,000 business partnering meetings have been organized during the event.

Telugu Film Director, VijayaBapineedu, dies at age 83


VijayaBapineedu, Telugu director-producer, known for giving several hit films to actor Chiranjeevi, passed
away on 13th February, 2019 at the age of 83 years.He was passed away in Hyderabad, Telangana.He was
born in Andhra Pradesh.
i. His movie ‘Gang Leader’ was remade in Hindi as ‘AajkaGoondaraj’ with Chiranjeevi in the lead. Other hit
movies include ‘Big Boss’, ‘Khiladi No. 786’ and ‘MagaDheerudu’.

Telangana Current Affairs – March 2019


Special Expenditure Observers for States of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka,
Nagaland and Telangana, have been appointed by Election Commission of India
On 26th March 2019, Election Commission of India has appointed Sh. Gopal Mukherjee as Special Expenditure
Observers for the state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Sh. D.D. Goel as Special Expenditure
Observers for the state of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.
Key Points:
i. Sh. Gopal Mukherjee is ex- Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 1980 batch, and former Member of Central
Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
ii. Sh.D.D.Goel is ex- Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 1982 batch, and former Directorate General of
Income Tax Investigation (DGIT Inv.).
iii. Both these officers will oversee and monitor the work being done by the electoral machinery and ensure
that stringent and effective enforcement action is undertaken against the person/entities who are trying to
persuade voters by distributing cash, liquor & freebies etc.
iv.Further, the Commission has decided to give additional charge of Gujarat and Karnataka to Sh.
ShailendraHanda and Ms. Madhu Mahajan, respectively.ShHanda would thus be Special Expenditure Observer
for Maharashtra and Gujarat while Ms Mahajan will be deployed in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

ECI appoints Special Central Police Observer for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Election Commission of India has appointed Shree K K Sharma (IPS 1982 Retd DG Border Security Force) as
the Central Police Observer for the States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.He would oversee the deployment
and other security related issues in both the states.
K K Sharma was earlier nominated for the States of West Bengal and Jharkhand but his appointment was
objected by the opposition parties of both states.

MoU signed by Ola and Telangana Govt. to strengthen traffic infrastructure in Hyderabad
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Ola and the Government of Telangana to
support the government’s initiative to implement smart solutions to enhance mobility experience further
strengthening traffic infrastructure in Hyderabad.
i. Under the MoU, the first pilot project proposed is the dynamic mapping of riding quality of various major
roads in Hyderabadthrough the network of vehicles operating on the Ola platform.
ii. The desired outcome of this pilot project is to reduce accidents causing because of potholes, monitor the
construction of roads, and prioritize budget for road repair.

Telangana government unveiled its Digital portal for MSMEs


On 27th March, 2019, Telangana government has launched a digital business networking portal for
Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises MSMEs – Telangana State GlobalLinker (ts-msme.globallinker.com). This
networking portal will digitise over 2.3 million MSMEs of the State which would connect them to the global
economy.

Key points
i. The motive behind this is to address key challenges faced by MSMEs with the core objective of making their
business growth more simpler, more profitable and enjoyable.
ii. It will also allow MSMEs to create a digital profile for their business, connect with other global MSMEs,
enable them to find buyers and suppliers, gain visibility and receive up-to-date industry trends and news.

Joint exercises to be conducted by US army and NSG in Hyderabad


The US military forces and the Indian National Security Guard (NSG) is conducting joint exercises
in Hyderabad. This would be a part of the US-India security partnership. The aim of these exercises is to
enhance preparedness and tackle any crisis that affects the public health and safety.
i. The exercise is witnessing participation by the 1st Battalion and the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne)
stationed out of Okinawa, Japan.
ii. The exercise will be overseen from the US Embassy, New Delhi and US Special Operations Pacific Command
at Camp HM Smith in Hawaii.
iii. The exercises constitute the US Indo-Pacific Command’s Theater Security Cooperation Program, undertaken
by the US military in partnership with a certain group of nations in the Indo-Pacific region to enhance
coordination and capabilities.

Telangana Current Affairs – April 2019


Telangana secured top spot in eLearning Training for Field Staff
Telangana has secured the first rank for the second year in a row in the e-Learning training programme of
Department of Personal and Training (DoPT), Government of India. The training is being imparted to achieve
the goal of “training for all”.
i. Over 20, 000 field staff in different districts of Telangana was imparted training on 12 soft skills
modules and 3 domain-specific modules on RTI, Office Procedures, and Finance & Accounts, by Dr MCR HRD
Institute.

ii. The institute is also mentoring other states to spread the Comprehensive Online Modified Modules on
Induction Training (COMMIT) Programme as a national mission.

The M3 version of EVMs to be used in Nizamabad Lok Sabha and Likely To Enter Guinness Book with
Record EVMs
On 11th April 2019, The Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana may enter in the Guinness World
Records for the maximum number of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) of M3 version used in the polling
booth.

Key Points:
i. Total of 12 EVMs in each polling station was linked to one control unit in each of the 1,778 polling centers.
ii. It became the first constituency in the country to witness polling with EVMs for a large number of
candidates (185 candidates).
iii.This new version of EVMs was developed by the Electronics Corp of India Ltd (ECIL) and Bharat
Electronics Ltd (BEL).
iv. The Nizamabad constituency has a little over 15.53 lakh voters including 3.73 lakh farmers.
v. This new M3 version EVMs, came after 2013, with a maximum capacity of 384 candidates including NOTA,
have additional features like Tamper Detection and Self Diagnostics.

Telugu poet K Siva Reddy honoured with the prestigious SaraswatiSamman 2018
On 11th April 2019, Telugu poet K Siva Reddy has been honoured with the prestigious SaraswatiSamman,
2018with a cash prize of 15 lakh rupees for his collection of poetry titled ‘PakkakiOttigilite’.
Key Points:
i. He was born in 1943 in KarmurivariPalem near Tenali, Andhra Pradesh.
ii. He has won several awards, including the SahityaAkademi Award for his book ‘Mohana! Oh, Mohana!’.
iii. The SaraswatiSamman award was given annually for an outstanding literary work written in any 22 Indian
languages listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India. It is one of the highest literary awards,
instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991.

Telangana Current Affairs – May 2019


Centre issued Drought Advisory to six states
Recently, centre has issued a “drought advisory” to six states named Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu due to water storage in dams dropped to a “critical level”. Centre has
asked these 6 six states to use water judiciously.
Key Highlights
i. Central Water Commission (CWC) always issues drought advisory whenever the water level in reservoirs is
20 percent less than the average of live water storage figures of the past 10 years.
ii. According to figures released by CWC, the total water storage available was 35.99 billion cubic metres, which
is 22 percent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

About CWC :
It functions as an attached office of Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation,
Government of India, and monitors total water storage available in 91 major reservoirs across the country.

Telangana records 15% GSDP growth in FY19 with Rs. 8,66,875 crore
Telangana recorded 15% Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth for the Financial year ended March
31, 2019 with Rs.8,66,875 crore. For the year 2018, it stood at Rs. 7,53,804 crore.

Key Points:
i. After the formation of Telangana state, this was the first ever highest growth registered.
ii. The capital expenditure for the year was Rs. 47,038 crore and this was the main reason for recording the
highest growth rate. The total capital expenditure from 2014-15 to 2018-19 was Rs. 1,64,519 crore.
iii. Primary sector grew by 10.9%, secondary sector by 14.9% and tertiary sector registered a growth of 15.5%.
The debt to GSDP ratio was 22%, lower than the limit set by Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management
(FRBM) Act which is 25%.
iv. 14.2% was the GSDP rate for the year 2017-18 and 2016-17.

Telangana to set up country’s first ‘Blockchain District’ in Hyderabad


Telangana has released a draft blockchain policy to set up country’s first ‘Blockchain
District’ in Hyderabad. It is aimed to create an ecosystem for major blockchain companies, start-ups for
promoting research, innovation and industry collaboration. Telangana Government had signed an agreement
with Tech Mahindra to set up the Blockchain district in 2018.

Key Points:
i. The draft was released by Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (IT E&C) Department.
ii. The focus will be given to the sectors such as banking, financial services and insurance, pharmaceuticals and
healthcare, government institutions and departments, logistics and supply chains.
iii. The incentives like access to investments, subsidies, tax credits will be rolled out to attract enterprises,
Small and Medium Enterprises and startups.
iv. Other incentives include 25% subsidy on lease rentals up to 5 lakh per annum for the first three years of
operations, 100% reimbursement of State Goods and Services Tax (SGST ) for the first three years for startups
with revenue less than 5 crores and along with one-time grant of Rs.10 lakh, 75% subsidy in travel fare when
the founders attend global conferences and 25% reimbursement on Internet charges would be provided.
iv. It is estimated that by 2030 blockchain can generate $3 trillion per year in business value.

Veteran CPI leader P.P.C Joshi passed away in Puppalaguda, Telangana


On May 26, 2019, Veteran CPI (Communist Party of India) leader P.P.C Joshi aged 80 passed away at his home
in Puppalaguda, Telangana after suffering from prolonged illness. The communist leader had participated in the
Telangana armed struggles.
i. He hailed from a village in Godavari, Andra Pradesh, born in July 1940.
ii. He served as the General Manager of Visalaandhra Publishing House, treasurer of the CPI Central Committee
office and People’s Publishing House.
iii. He was the founder of Prachee Publications. But later it was handed over to Nava Telangana Publications.

Country’s biggest stucco figurine unearthed in Telangana’s Phanigiri


Indian archaeologists recently unearthed a life-sized stucco sculpture from a Buddhist site at Phanigiri in
Suryapet, Telangana. As per heritage department officials, it represents one of Bhodhisattva in Jathaka

Chakra.This is the largest stucco sculpture found from India till date.

i. The sculpture is about 1.73 metres in height and 35 cm in width.


ii. It is considered to have been built at at peak of Ikshavaku dynasty.
iii. The preliminary excavation at Phanigiri was started by archaeological department official Khaja Muhammad
Ahmad in 1941.
iv. The present excavations are being conducted by assistant professor SrikanthGanveer as co-excavation
director and PagadamNagaraju as excavation director.

World’s largest multi-stage, multi-purpose scheme Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project inaugurated in
Telangana

On June 21, 2019, The first phase of the world's largest multi-stage, multi-purpose scheme Kaleshwaram Lift
Irrigation Project (KLIP) worth Rs 80,000 crore was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Telangana
Chandrashekar Rao at Medigadda in Jayashankar-Bhupalpally district near the borders with Maharashtra and
Chhattisgarh. It was inaugurated in the presence of Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, ESL
Narasimhan, Maharashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan
Mohan Reddy. The cost of the project is expected to rise to Rs 1,00,000 crore on its completion.

Key Points:

• It is constructed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL).


• The project, built across Godavari river, has become the world's biggest in terms of capacity with 3
Barrages, 1531 km of Gravity Canals, 203 km of Tunnels, 20 Lifts, 19 Pump houses and 20 Reservoirs
with total capacity of 147 TMC water irrigating 37 lakh acres.
• It will provide irrigation facility for two crops in a year to 45 lakh acres and will supply 40 TMC of water
to the ambitious Mission Bhagiratha drinking water supply project.
• Approximate 16 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) will support industries.
• It will see at least 2 TMC of Godavari water lifted daily to the Medigadda Barrage and then transported
via six more levels to Konda PochammaSagar Reservoir, which is located approximately 60 kilometres
from Hyderabad.
• The biggest lift schemes in the world, till date, are the Colorado lift scheme in America and the Great
Manmade River in Egypt.

Telangana state formation day observed on June 2


Telangana Formation Day is observed annually on June 2 to mark the official formation of the state after its
bifurcation from Andhra Pradesh in 2014. It is the youngest state of India. This year marks the fifth Telangana
State Formation Day.
i. A number of cultural events, sports, and social events lined up in the state as part of the celebration. It
became the 29th state of the country after the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act was passed in the
Parliament. Telangana RashtraSamithi (TRS) chief K Chandrashekar Rao was elected as the first Chief Minister
of the state.
ii. Telangana is bordered by the states of Maharashtra to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the

NPCI tie-up with Telangana to offer MeeSeva service portal


On June 18, 2019 The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) of Mumbai signed an agreement with
the state Government ofTelangana. This is to offer a mode of payment options like UPI (Unified Payments
Interface ) Collect Request, RuPay Debit and Credit Cards to the users of the ‘MeeSeva’ portal of the
Government.
Key points:
i. The portal offers 150 government services and in 2018, it crosses 100 million transactions.
ii. The partnership will help the people of Telangana to get the benefits of debit and credit card payment
network in India and it will be a true Make in India collaboration.

13th Global Healthcare Summit organized by AAPI and GAPIO held in Hyderabad
Vice President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 13th edition of the annual Global Healthcare

On July 23, 2019, An online payment solutions provider PayPal Holdings, Inc has opened a 3rd Global

i. The Nasdaq-listed firm launched the Centre as a part of an expansion of its India footprint. The expansion

passed away at Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad while undergoing treatment for pneumonia.

i. Born on 16 January 1942, in Madgul, Telangana, he was a 4-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from
Kalwakurthy from 1969-84.

Pilot basis of one Nation one ration card scheme launched in 4 States
In order to boost the National Food Security, the pilot basis of One Nation One Ration Card scheme was
launched by the government in four states namely Telangana , Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Families holding this card can buy subsidized rice and wheat from any ration shop in these four states.
Key points
i. This program is expected to be implemented by August next year.
ii. A trial run of the project was conducted by the Telangana Civil Supplies Corporation last week where
consumers from Andhra Pradesh bought their commodities from the fair price shop in Hyderabad.
iii. White ration cardholders can buy the subsidized rice and wheat from any fair price shops in these state and
this same facility is available in Andhra Pradesh also through POS (Point Of Sale) machines.

• 28 Crore customers have been benefited with this ration portability introduced in Telangana last year.
• 56 lakh beneficiaries are covered under the National Food Security Act.

To avail, this One Nation One Ration Card scheme, the family’s ration card should be linked with their Aadhaar
number.

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan inaugurates interstate portability in two clusters of states
Shri Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution inaugurated the inter-
State portability in two clusters of adjoining States of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana and Gujarat & Maharashtra,
as a major step towards achieving the objective of ‘One Nation One Ration Card’.Under the National Food
Security Act, beneficiaries can avail the benefits from any of the two cluster States.

Key points
i. 11 States/UT have implemented the intra-State portability. The 11 states are

• Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan,
Telangana and Tripura.
ii. Having implemented intra-State portability already, the inter-State portability will be introduced in these 11
States by 1st January 2020.
iii. Other states apart from these 11 states will be included in the inter-state portability in a phased manner
starting from 1st of June 2020.
iv. To sustain the reforms brought in by the ongoing scheme of ‘End-to-End Computerization of TPDS
Operations’ and to introduce new reforms, the Department of Food & Public Distribution, is targeting
implementation of nation-wide portability in distribution of subsidised foodgrains to the beneficiaries without
the need of obtaining a new ration card under ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ System.
v. electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices supported by the biometric/Aadhaar authentication will be installed
at Fair Price Shops(FPS)
vi. More than 4.1 lakh (77%) ePoS devices are already operational across the country. 25 States/UTs have
either completed the installation in all FPSs or having significant progress. More than 85% ration cards (at least
one member) in the country are linked with the Aadhaar numbers of the beneficiaries.

First ever space museum of India inaugurated at Hyderabad


On July 26 2019, the first space museum of India opening new attraction to space enthusiasts, was set up
at Hyderabad in association with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

225th meeting of CBT held at Hyderabad, Telangana


On August 21, 2019, the 225th meeting of Central Board of Trustees (CBT) held at Hyderabad, Telangana. It was
attended by the Minister of State (I/C) for Labour and Employment Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, who is also
Chairman of CBT.
Key Points:
i.EPS 1995: It approved the proposal to recommend for amendment in Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS)
1995 for the restoration of commuted value of the pension to the Pensioners after 15 years of drawing
commutation which will benefit approximately 6.3 lakhs pensioners.
ii.Educative booklet: The Minister released the educative booklet on seasonal employees regarding special
provision in EPS’ 1995 regarding eligibility of seasonal employees for pension. The contents of the booklet
brings out the Scheme provision that contributory service in any year, even if contributory period is less than a
year is treated as a full year of eligible service for seasonal employee and this will help dispel doubts in minds
of members/employers.
iii.EPFIGMS 2.0 version: The minister launched the revamped EPFIGMS 2.0 version which will benefit more
than 5 crores subscribers and lakhs of employers by speedy and smooth resolution of grievances.
iv.Selection and Performance Evaluation: The Board approved the proposal for Selection and Performance
Evaluation of next Custodian by the new Consultant which will be appointed on the basis of Report of Five
Members’ Committee constituted by the CBT.
v.Selection of ETF Manufacturers: The Board approved the decision to choose the Exchange Traded Fund
(ETF) manufacturers through public bidding by October 30, 2019, extension of the term of the present ETF
manufacturers (SBI MF and UTI MF) till then and also to authorize the Finance Investment & Audit Committee
(FIAC) to conduct the exercise of choosing ETF manufacturers.
vi.Allocation of investment in Nifty 50 and Sensex: The Board approved the proposal that the fund
allocation between Nifty 50 and Sensex ETFs be divided evenly, i.e. in the ratio of 50% to 50%.
vii.Appointment of a Consultant in addition to M/s. CRISIL Ltd: The Board approved the nomination of
members from employer and employee side in a Committee constituted to select and appoint a separate
Agency/Consultant in addition to M/s. CRISIL (Credit Rating Information Services of India) limited, inter-alia to
review the working of the Portfolio Managers (PMs), assist the investment Committee in redemption of ETFs,
etc.

xiv.EPFO exit from DHFL: CBT has allowed the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to exercise

xv.Fund managers: The EPFO’s advisory body Finance, Audit and Investment Committee (FAIC) had finalised

IIT Hyderabad, NIT Jalandhar Researchers develop Bone Implant Materials From waste Eggshells
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and Dr. B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology
(NIT) Jalandhar (Punjab) researchers have developed a process by which bone implant materials can be
synthesized from eggshells which are dumped as waste.

Key points:
i. Process: The team synthesized nanopowder, which is a hundred thousand times smaller than the width of a
single human hair, from the eggshells, which are made of largely calcium-containing minerals (95.1%) along
with small amounts of proteins and water.

Telangana begins to celebrate the floral festival, Bathukamma for the year 2019
Bathukamma, a 9-day wonderful festival of flowers celebrated by the women on a grand scale has
commenced in the Warangal city of Telangana on September 28, 2019, & will conclude on October 6, 2019.

Key points:
i. The festival is celebrated for the entire 9 days of Navratri (begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya and ends
on Saddula Bathukamma festival on Durgashtami, two days before Dussehra).
ii. In Navratri, Hindu deity Gauri Devi is worshiped as Batukamma idols, which is made up of flower stack.
iii. The women pray to Batukamma, sing folklore and ask deity a boon of health, prosperity, and happiness for
her family. Bathukamma means a beautiful pile of flowers. Most of the flowers with medicinal properties are
used in Bathukamma.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurates food park of Telangana


On September 6, 2019, the Union Minister of food processing industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal, inaugurated
the first Mega Food Park of Telangana that is promoted by Smart Agro Food Park at Lakkampally village,
Nizamabad, Telangana.

Key points
i. Profit: A total of Rs 14,000 crore turnover is expected through this food park with 50,000 job generation and
would also benefit 1 lakh farmers. During the inauguration, the farmers were informed about the Pradhan
MantriKisanSammanNidhi (PMKSN) Yojana that provides Rs 6000 per annum to the farmers.
ii. Food park aim: The aim of the food park is to double farmers income by 2022 and to reduce harvest loss
thus by overall contributing to the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government.
iii. Financial assistance: The food park is financially assisted by the government of up to Rs 50 crore per Mega
Food Park project. The Smart Agro Mega Food Park set up at a cost of Rs 108.95 crores in 78acre land.
iv. Park facilities: 5000 tonne warehouse for each raw material, and other laboratories.

Telangana CM Chandrashekar Rao presents Rs 1.46 lakh crore annual budget for FY 20
On September 9, 2019, the Chief Minister(CM) of Telangana, Shri K Chandrashekar Rao presented the annual
budget for 2019-20 of Rs 1.46 lakh crore. The total expenditure in 2019-20 pegged at Rs 1,82,017 crore
(Revenue expenditure: Rs 1,31,629 crore and Capital expenditure: Rs 32,815 crore) .
Key points
Budget presentation: Despite the state finance minister T Harish Rao, the CM himself presented the Budget
but it is to be presented in the Legislative Council by Harish Rao.
GSDP: The Gross State Domestic Product(GSDP) of the state has increased to Rs 8.65 lakh crore in 2018-19
from Rs 4.51 lakh crore in 2013-14.
Revenue receipts: The growth rate is expected to be slowed in terms of revenue receipt, due to which budget
is to be pared(reduced) and pegged at about Rs.1.70 lakh crore based on vote-on-account (interim permission
to spend money as against a full Budget). The expected revenue surplus is ₹6,564 crores and the fiscal deficit is
₹27,749 crore.
Budget allocation: Some of the important budget allocated sectors are as follows,

Telangana declares 2020 as Artificial Intelligence(AI) year


The Telangana state Government will celebrate 2020 as Year of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by organising
multiple programs and activities related to the new age technology throughout the year. The decision comes in
the backdrop of the emerging talent workforce and renewed focus by industry and other ecosystem players on
this space in the past four to five years.

Key points:
i. Telangana government has signed up with NITI Aayog(National Institution for Transforming India), which
has come out with the ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence’ to organize pilot projects in the
state.Telangana was the 1st State to sign up with NITI Aayog when they prepared ‘AI for All’ document.
ii. During the celebration, a lot of hackathons & meetings will be held and the government organization will
give challenges and make available data sets on which companies can run algorithms.
iii. A Centre of Excellence in Data Sciences and AI will be set up by NASSCOM(National Association of Software
and Services Companies), a trade association of Indian Information Technology and Business Process
Outsourcing industry.
iv. IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology), Kharagpur is also coming up with its regional centre in Hyderabad to
initiate first program in AI in Telangana.

VenuMadhav, an Indian Telugu film actor, television presenter, mimicry artist, and comedian has passed

ii. Bhagat Singh Koshyari: He was the former Chief Minister(CM) of Uttarakhand (2nd CM), who also served as
National Vice President of BJP and party’s 1st State president in the state. He is now appointed as the governor
of Maharashtra succeeding VidyaSagar Rao whose 5-year term comes to an end.
iii. Kalraj Mishra: He is appointed as the Governor of Rajasthan replacing Kalyan Singh. He served as former

Former bureaucrat BN Yugandhar, father of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, passes away in Hyderabad,
Telangana
Microsoft’s chief executive officer (CEO) Satya Nadela’s father and former bureaucrat BN Yugandhar has
passed away in Hyderabad, Telangana after a brief illness. He was 82.

i. Yugandhar, a 1962 batch Indian Administration Service (IAS) officer, worked as Secretary in the Union Rural

ECI appoints 2 special expenditure observers for bye-elections of Telangana and Sikkim
On October 4, 2019, Election Commission of India (ECI) appointed an ex-Indian Revenue Service (ex IRS 1983)
officer Mr. B. R. Balakrishnan and a serving IRS officer, Mr Suresh Kumar (IRS 1988) as Special
Expenditure Observers for the Bye-Elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Telangana and Sikkim,
respectively. They were appointed according to the powers conferred under Article 324 of the Constitution and
Section 20B of The Representation of the People Act 1951. They will supervise and monitor the election work.

Telangana police integrates police patrol systems with passenger cabs


In order to provide a safe & secure environment to passengers, especially women, the Telangana police in its
1st of its kind , have taken up a high tech initiative to integrate their police patrol systems with passengers cabs.
This is being done using police’s ‘Hawk Eye’ app that is connected to every taxi aggregators apps that
provides a cab service facility.
Key points:
i. In case of emergency, the commuter can access the ‘emergency button’ installed in the related cab service
app. This will send the latitude and longitudinal coordinates of the passenger to the police & other details of the
private cab service to the police attending to emergency services such as control room and closest patrol
mobile.
ii. If commuter in distress presses the button, the message will be transmitted to Hawk-Eye App through a
back-end operational workflow. The police will be able to respond quickly to reach the commuter by
continuously tracing the movement of the vehicle on the geo-tagged map, once they get the information.

MadatiNarasimha Reddy, Senior Congress leader and former minister has passed away in a city hospital in

Government approves for four medical device parks
On November 11, 2019, Government has approved to set up four medical device parks to support Make in
India and give world-class treatment in low cost. The four parks will be set up in Andhra
Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These parks will provide better infrastructure, for the company
to plug and play.
The approval was given for the project of Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone for establishing Common Facility
Center (CFC) for Superconducting Magnetic coil testing and Research. The scheme recommends to provide Rs
25 crore or 70 per cent of the project cost of setting up of CFC.

i.The medical devices trade market in the country is of around Rs 70,000 crores.
ii.The domestic medical devices industry is very small even though India ranks fourth largest market in Asia.
iii. India is a large importer of medical devices, with domestic industry accounting for about 2 % of the global
industry which stands at USD 250 billion.
iv.Uttarakhand and Gujarat have also approached for the medical device parks in their states.

Indian Railway Institute of Financial Management (IRIFM) inaugurated in Hyderabad


On November 25, 2019 The Indian Railway Institute of Financial Management (IRIFM) by the Indian
Railways (IR) has been set up in Hyderabad, Telangana. The institute will provide professional training in
railway finances management. It was inaugurated by Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman of the Railway Board.
IRIFM has been constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) at a cost of Rs.85 crores.

i.IRIFM is a green building that can generate 90% of its own power needs with solar installations on the

CSIR’s -NGRI, Hyderabad releases 1st ever Geochemical Baseline Atlas of India
On November 10, 2019, In a bid to understand and assess the environmental damage and help policymakers to
devise a strategy, CSIR- NGRI ( Council of Scientific & Industrial Research- National Geophysical Research
Institute), based in Hyderabad, Telangana, has released the 1st ever, ‘Geochemical Baseline Atlas of India’.
Key Points:
i.The Atlas, consists of 44 maps of metals, oxides, and elements present in top and bottom soils across India,
will help to document the concentration and distribution of the chemical elements in the soils of India.
ii.Map Development: To develop the maps, the NGRI divided the globe into 5,000 cells of 160 km by 160 km
each. Of it, India has 122 cells. The work was initiated in 2007 from cell number 1 which is in Kanyakumari,
Tamil Nadu. The last cell is in Arunachal Pradesh. Soils from uninhabited places were collected. The work
ended in 2011.
iii.The geochemical data of these maps will be given to International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGC), which

On November 18, 2019, Telangana state government’s Agriculture Minister S. Niranjan Reddy & Finance
Minister T. Harish Rao have jointly launched ‘Rythu Mitra’, an exclusive mobile application in Siddipet
district for the 1st time that provide 18 services to the farmers of that district.
Key Points:
i.By using this app, the farmers can get advice and guidance from experts and agriculture extension officers
(AEOs) & also access information regarding government schemes, subsidies, updates on Rythu Bandhu release,
the progress of Rythu Bima claims and other kinds of government assistance being extended to the farm sector.
ii.A total of 109 AEOs appointed to visit every part of the district & update their observations on the mobile
app. The farmers can access the information on pest prevalence and its management.
iii. A dashboard will be installed in the District Collector’s office ,in which the schedule of each and every AEO

$10 billion target set for creating job opportunities for 20-30 lakh people by 2025: Rajnath
i.As per Mr. Rajnath, the defense ministry has set a target of $ 26 billion for aerospace, defense services and
goods by 2025 under the new defense production policy & with this policy of the government, a target of about
$10 billion has been set to create job opportunities for 20-30 lakh people.
ii.More work needs to be done on DPSUs (defence public sector units), industry, research institutes and
services to achieve the target set by the government to include at least 25 AI (artificial intelligence) based
products in defense sector.
iii.DRDO has encouraged more than 1,800 industries, which are actively working together to produce defense
systems. Highlighting various initiatives of the Government of India to encourage innovation and development
within the country, he stressed that excellence in defense innovation and adoption of defense systems is to be
brought.
iv.DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy ,Senior officials and around 300 Industry representatives were
present on the occasion.

About Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2019:
It was undertaken from 14,August to 30,September,2019 with the aim to recognise the top performing states &
districts on the basis of quantitative and qualitative sanitation criteria by covering 33 states ,union territories
(UTs).It involves 683 districts of total and 17,209 villages.
Ranking : It is based on a set of parameters under which 30 % weightage is given to direct observation of
researchers .They checked the availability & usage of toilets, status of water logging and plastic littering.
35 % scores are provided to people feedback received online, during group meetings and from famous
influencers. Another 35 % marks given to service level progress.

T-Hub partnered with DST & NPCI for 1st Fintech Accelerator program & txnnxt hub launch
On November 26, 2019, the Telangana government initiative for startups, T-Hub has announced the launch of
the 1st edition of the Fintech Accelerator program in partnership with DST (Department of Science and
Technology) and NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). Txnnxt hub, an innovation lab by NPCI at the
premises of T-Hub was also launched.

Fintech Accelerator program:The Fintech Accelerator program, presented by DST under NIDHI (National
Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations) acceleration scheme, will be executed by T-Hub and

Telangana CM, K. Chandrashekar Rao releases book on Kaleshwaram project by Sridhar Rao Deshpande
On 5th December 2019, Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana released a book
named “Kaleswaram project: Telangana Pragathi Ratham” (Kaleswaram project: The Telangana
Development Chariot) at Pragati Bhavan. The book was authored by CM’s officer on special duty (OSD,
Irrigation) Sridhar Rao Deshpande.
Key Points:
i.The book is about the details and History of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), it also states the
efforts taken by Chandrasekhar Rao from the initiation to the execution of the project and the data of water
flow from Central Water Commission (CWC). The Kaleswaram Project was completed in three years and has
started supplying water to the farming community in the state.

SC orders judicial enquiry in Hyderabad Encounter; Panel to be headed by ex-judge VS Sirpurkar


On December 12, 2019 the Supreme Court (SC) has appointed a 3-member inquiry commission to be headed by
former apex court judge V S Sirpurkar to inquire into the encounter killing of the four accused involvedin the
Hyderabad(Telangana) gang-rape and murder case of a veterinarian. The report has to be submitted to the SC
within 6 months. The bench comprising of Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, ordered that
security to the commission will be provided by the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force).

i.Other Members: The members of the commission include former Bombay High Court(HC) judge Rekha
Sondur Baldota and former CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) director Devarayapuram Ramasamy
Karthikeyan.
ii.The Chief Justice of India(CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde sought an SIT (Special Investigation Team) report into
the case, saying no other authority shall inquire into the matter pending before the commission of inquiry till

Ex-HC judge CV Ramulu appointed as Telangana’s 1st Lok Ayukta; Chandraiah new SHRC chief
On December 20, 2019, Former High Court Judge CV Ramulu has been appointed as the Lokayukta in
Telangana. His order was issued by Telangana governor Dr.Tamilisai Sounderarajan with immediate effect.
Apart from CV Ramulu, Former law secretary V Niranjan Rao has been appointed as Upa Lokayukta.
G Chandraiah- new SHRC chief:
Former judge Justice G Chandraiah was appointed as Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
He succeeded Nisar Ahmad Kakru, who was the last SHRC chairman in Telangana and the post was left vacant
after his retirement in 2016.
Key Points:
i.Other appointments: N. Anand Rao and Mohammed Irfan Moinuddin were also appointed as members of the
SHRC.
ii.It is the 1st time the state government has constituted the Lokayukta and Human Rights Commission since
the formation of the state in 2014.
iii.The appointment was made by a 4-member committee headed by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
iv.It is also to be noted that recently on December 13, 2019, the state government issued the ordinance
amending the Telangana Lokayukta Act 1983 and Protection of HR Act 1993 to deal with non-availability of
retired chief justices and appointing retired judges of the HC to head both the institutions.
v.Lokayukta: The Lokayukta is an anti-corruption ombudsman organization in the Indian states.

WE Hub, Startup India DPIIT partnered for ‘Wing’ program for women entrepreneurs in Telangana
On December 20, 2019, the WE hub (Women Entrepreneurs hub), announced its partnership with Start-up
India, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to launch Startup India’s flagship
program for women entrepreneurs called WING (Women Rise Together) program in Telangana. The program
will be launched in collaboration with KSUM (Kerala Startup Mission) and would provide the entrepreneurs
with knowledge on innovation and access to incubation, investors and business support.

i.The Telangana edition of WING was launched at WE Hub, Hyderabad, Telangana by Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama
Rao, Minister for IT (Information technology), Industries and Municipal Administration and Urban
Development(MA&UD), of Telangana govt.
ii.Through WE hub (Women Entrepreneurs hub) 10 workshops to promote women entrepreneurship will be
conducted. The hub aims to support 7500 entrepreneurs over the next 1 year.
iii.National Start-Up Award 2020: The hub in partnership with Startup India will provide National Start-Up
Award 2020 to help the women entrepreneurs recognize and reward women-led startups in the region.

NMCG conferred with Leadership in Rejuvenation and Protection of Fresh Water Systems in India
award:
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) was conferred with ‘Leadership in Rejuvenation and
Protection of Fresh Water Systems in India‘ award during the conference held at the Hyderabad
International Convention Centre(HICC) in Hyderabad, Telangana. The award was given to NMCG for its
transformative initiatives in the water sector.
Key Points:
i.Namami Gange Pavilion at conference: NMCG has set up the Namami Gange Pavilion at the conference,
inaugurated by Executive Director (Technical) of NMCG, DP Mathuria. He also chaired the plenary session panel
discussion at the GeoSmart India Conference, on the topic ‘Vision New India’.
ii.River cleaning work by NMCG: The NMCG is recognised as India’s leading initiative in using geospatial
technologies for its river cleaning work. It also regulates the proposed protected and regulatory zone along the
banks of river and monitors pollu-organisation using cutting edge technologies like LiDAR to attain high-
resolution maps and data for the entire Ganga river basin.
• The NMCG has built key platforms and solutions needed to support a robust resources management
system.
• The NMCG also strives to achieve GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping of the entire Ganga
river basin for effective execution and decision-making.
• Current GIS project: GIS Project on ‘Generation of high-resolution DEM and GIS-ready database for
part of River Ganga for NMCG’ is currently being executed by Survey of India(SoI), Dehradun,
Uttarakhand.
• The datasets of GIS would provide major support to Ganga river basin management by embedding
GIS in different aspects of planning and implementation at National/State/Local level.
iii.NRSC support to NMCG: Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO), National Remote Sensing Centre
(NRSC), supports NMCG in using geospatial technology for various activities to achieve the objective of
monitoring of pollution in river Ganga.
iv.Lidar: Lidar is a surveying method that measures distance to a target by illuminating the target with laser
light and measuring the reflected light with a sensor. Lidar is sometimes called 3D laser scanning.

IIT Hyderabad partnered with 4 Japanese institutions for research in Earthquake Engineering
On December 5, 2019, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) will collaborate with 4 Japanese
institutions for research purpose in areas which includes earthquake engineering, and doctoral programs.
The Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) in this regard was signed by IIT-H director Budaraju Srinivasa
Murty with the 4 institutions during his visit to Japan. The MoU will boost the Indo-Japanese research ties.

Telugu Actor and Writer G. Maruti Rao dies at 80


On 12th December 2019, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Telugu actor and writer dies at 80 while undergoing treatment
at a hospital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Gollapudi was born in Vijayanagaram, Andhra Pradesh (AP), he was
named as the best writer for his film ‘Doctor Chakravarthy’ in the Nandi Award in 1989.

i.He was a member of the Script Scrutiny Committee of the National Film Development Corporation of India
(NFDC). He also established the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation in the year 1997, which presents the
