There is a strong case nowadays for returning stolen art by the world's major
museum. Do you agree that art acquired in dodgy ways should be returned to its
previous owners?
I admit that art acquired in a intelligent way must be returned to its preceding
owners. There have been many historical modulations in the world, due to which
objects of art may not be where they conceived. Because of this, there are many
controversies.
It cannot be refused, that every month produces new cases of the “ homecoming”
of antiquities from American museums to their countries of origin. For instance,
Benin bronzes that were stolen from the royal palace in what is now Nigeria. They
ended up in museums in Europe and America. In my humble opinion, they must be
returned, because their home is not America, but Nigeria.
Besides, museums have rarely been forced by legal rulings to give up artefacts;
instead, they have voluntarily handed over the dodgy objects in their collections.
In conclusion, I can say that the government should proclaim the sale or theft of
someone else's property, and all stolen art should be returned, because it is
necessary to preserve the cultural heritage of a country.
