Scene Analysis

1. In scene two of Belleville, Zack and Abby are seen asleep on their couch. The hours

before they smoked all of their weed and had sex after an argument. Abby stubs her toe

as she learns about updated information on her sisters condition. The main event of the

scene is Abby opening up to Zach about her sister. Not only is Abby trying to connect

with Zach, she is also giving him the opportunity to support her, similar to that of a test.

2. This scene works to show the constant miscommunication between Zack and Abby. She

Is opening up about her sister and Zach is not able to stay on the same page as her.

Towards the end of the scene we see Abby lose her temper and quickly bring it back in in

order to keep the peace in the house.

3. Initiating action- Abby learns about her sisters C-section

Rising action-Zach is unable to stay present with Abby

Turning point-Zach makes a bad joke which upsets Abby

Climax-Abby admits she is resentful of the life she has

Falling action-Abby gets ready for their date

4. Abby has a sister. Abby and Zack live in Belleville, Paris. Zack and Abby are married.

Abby’s sister is in New Jersey. Abby’s sister is pregnant.

5. The central conflict of the scene is that Abby is opening up and confiding in Zack but

Zach seems preoccupied and unable to focus on what Abby is saying which makes her

feel like he doesn’t care.

6. Abby’s objective is to hold onto the intimacy they found when they were intimate. Zack’s

objective is to comfort Abby.

7. While directing this scene I found it very challenging to articulate what I wanted my

actors to do. I never wanted to tell them how to act or what they should do in the scene,

but I felt like it would take a lot longer to help guide them in the right direction. I guess

my lack of patience was the challenge.
