8.    Contents.  The analyzed document begins with an introduction to the good
agricultural practices of banana growing in the Magdalena region.
One of the fundamental pillars of the Association of Banana
Growers of Colombia, AUGURA, is the promotion and
development of projects that promote the improvement of the
productivity and competitiveness of the sector. For this, the Guild
has promoted different programs and research, which in alliance
with other entities has allowed producers to improve agricultural
practices and compete in the current market.

The partnership between the United Nations Environment Program

- UNEP and the Association of Banana Growers of Colombia,
AUGURA, was born within the framework of the project
"Reducing Pesticide Runoff into the Caribbean Sea" - REPCar -.
This project, funded by the Global Environment Facility - GEF, is
coordinated by the UNEP Caribbean Coordination Unit, with the
participation of Colombia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The demonstration projects and the training led by AUGURA in
the framework of the REPCar project, seek to raise awareness
among farmers about how their activity has consequences for the
preservation of natural resources, including marine ecosystems.
These ecosystems are the basis for the important tourism and
fishing activity in the region, thus influencing the economy of
coastal areas and the welfare of their populations. Likewise, the
project seeks to provide producers with tools that improve their
production systems, thus increasing the competitiveness of the
banana and plantain sector.
In this context, AUGURA, with the support of UNEP, have the
pleasure of sharing the dissemination of the following educational
material:
• Compendium of Good Agricultural Practices in the cultivation
of bananas in the Magdalena region.
• Compendium of Good Agricultural Practices in plantain
cultivation in the Urabá region.
• Integrated pest management in banana and plantain crops.
• Manual for pesticide management.
This material will serve as a consultation for producers, marketers,
researchers and all personnel who are part of this agroindustrial
sector, whose interest is the development of good agro-industrial
practices, which reduce the risk of contamination and lead to the
production of safe food, contributing This way, to promote a
greater and better positioning in the international markets and the
sustainable development of the region.
Food safety refers to the production of healthy or clean food from
the microbiological point of view, without neglecting the chemical
and physical contamination aspects. The concern for these aspects
of the safety of fresh foods has various origins. First, the increase
in international trade in fresh fruits and vegetables, has made
possible its availability in the market throughout the year, around
the world, these fruits and vegetables come from very different
production systems that involve very diverse agricultural
practices . Second, the consumption of vegetables and fruits has
increased markedly in developed countries following medical
recommendations that insist on the need to eat more vegetables to
prevent serious diseases such as colon cancer and in general to
improve the health, these indications have led to a substantial
change in the pattern of consumption. And, thirdly, there is the fact
that vegetables are no longer grown by those who consume them,
In the United States, it is estimated that around 76 million cases of
diseases and 9 thousand deaths occur annually, due to the
consumption of contaminated food. The bacteria found in the
infected persons have been Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella spp.,
Shigella spp. and E. coli 0157: H7. This problem has resulted in
the definition of good agricultural practices that ensure the
production of safe food from the microbial point of view to reduce
this risk of contamination. (RODRÍGUEZ, A., FORTIS, M) Safety
has become a priority requirement and a primary factor of quality
and competitiveness in national markets and mainly in export
markets

To ensure the safety of food, the different countries grouped in the

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS, promote the application of Good
Agricultural Practices and Manufacturing and the principles of the
system of Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) with chain
approach in all fields of the food sector, including fish, meat,
poultry, milk and dairy products, as well as fresh fruits and
vegetables. (BPA Guide)
GAP are a set of principles, standards and technical
recommendations, applicable to the various stages within a
production, in order to provide a safe product for direct
consumption or its agro-industrial process. Its application aims to
offer the market products of high quality and safety. GAPs are
oriented towards continuous improvement in the achievement of
sustainable agriculture and rural development (FAO, 2004.
The risk of contamination of the product after harvest is high,
since there is great manipulation by staff, the product has areas
exposed to attack by microorganisms, bruises and wounds, in
addition to the conditions of the packing area and supplies used
can be risk factors.

BPM is a basic tool for obtaining safe products for human

consumption, which are centralized in hygiene and handling
during packing, storage, transportation and industrialization if
required. Therefore, it takes into account good agricultural
practices in the different processes established for the cultivation
of bananas from the preparation of the land to the post-harvest of
this.
9.    Methodology. Implementation of GAP to improve banana cultivation, since it is a
crop that has high consumption both nationally and internationally
and this would prevent or control the possible diseases that may
develop due to the bad process.
10.    Conclusions. Document not submitted in writing explaining how BPA was
implemented and the results that are applied in banana cultivation.

Implementación de las BPA para el mejorar el cultivo de banano,
ya que es un cultivo que tiene un alto consumo tanto a nivel
nacional como internacional y esto evitaría o controlaría las
posibles enfermedades que pueden desarrollar por el mal proceso.
