Review on Incidents in the Community

During my first month of student teaching, there was an incident that affected both the

community and the school system. There had been a group of kids going around and

bullying/attacking other kids in a severe manner. They would beat kids up with both their fists

and anything that they had on them, including razor scooters and rocks that they found. At least

two kids were hospitalized due to these attacks. The attacks had been happening on a trail

behind the school and threats were also made on school grounds. There was a recording of one

of these attacks where it could be seen that one kid had a knife while another had a gun. This

recording went viral on social media over the weekend and the kids in the video were called out.

Neither kid who had a weapon was found before the weekend ended and this is when the

school decided that it would be unsafe for students to be in school. The high school decided to

close down until a police investigation was conducted and concluded. The high school was shut

down for three days and classes were held virtually to ensure everyone’s safety.

In order to ensure faculty and student safety, we transferred to virtual learning for three

days while the police conducted their investigation. In order to do this, we needed to make sure

all of our resources were transferred online. We spend a whole day typing up or worksheets into

google docs so students would have access to them at home. When we did see our students

we decided to check in with them at the beginning of class. This way we could gauge how they

were doing and handling the situation and change our lesson if things were bad for them. None

of the students we had were directly affected because of the attacks but it was still hard for them

to know that this was happening in their community.
