MTH252 Area Between Curves Activity Name:

Use the command “Integralbetween” in GeoGebra to check your answers.

Show all work, including integration (it will be good practice!).

1) Given f ( x)  ( x  3) 2 and g ( x)  x  1 (see graph), find the following. Show all work, including
integration. Use GeoGebra to check your answer.

a. The shaded area enclosed by the curves.

b. The area between the curves on [1, 4].

2) Given y  sin( x) and y  sin( 2 x) , find the exact area between the curves on [0, π]. (Hint: Begin by
graphing the curves. The intersection point is a “nice angle” found on the unit circle.) Provide a
sketch and shade the region(s) between the curves. Use GeoGebra to check your answer.

3) Given y  x 1  x 2 and y  x , find the exact area between the curves. (Hint: Begin by graphing
2
the curves. Use algebra to find the exact point(s) of intersection.) Provide a sketch and shade the
region(s) between the curves. Use GeoGebra to check your answer.
5) Find the area of the shaded region shown (left figure). Try this two ways:

a. Integrating with respect to x (middle figure).

b. Integrating with respect to y (right figure).

c. How does this region and/or area compare to that found in #1a? 
