Data Analysis – One way ANOVA assignment

One way ANOVA

In this research, One way ANOVA is used to compare the result of language
learning by using silent way method for three different classes. This method is triggered
by Gattecno where the aim is to give beginner level student oral and aural facility of the
target language in basic elements. Thus, the students are expected being independent,
autonomous, and responsible in learning process. (Gattecno, 1979, cited in Richard &
Rodgers, 1986, recited in Jannah, 2018). This research involved elementary school
students of the second graders which is symbolized as “symbol 1”, the third graders
defined as “symbol 2”, and the fourth graders represented as “symbol 3” (Setiyadi,
2018).
The result of analysis of variance showed that f = 39.218 with p = .000
(p<0.001). So, H0 is rejected. From the analysis above, it can be concluded that the
grades (students’ age) may significantly affect language learning outcomes. This
analysis have been also revealed that each group has different mean and each mean also
has different standard of deviation. In this case, it is proven that a mean value which is
gained by the second graders is the lowest among three different graders with the value
of mean is 42.878 and standard of deviation is 15.25. Contrasting with the case, the
mean score of the third graders is acquired within 67.419 and its standard of deviation is
17.07. Then, it is followed up by the fourth grades which rates to 76.363 and standard of
deviation 15.32. Both of these graders do not have significantly the mean score but the
fourth grader becomes the highest mean score.
In line with that case, the prior research, Bista in Richards & Schmidt (2002)
stated that the relationship between age and success in second language acquisition,
though complext in nature, is linked to the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH). This CPH
also known as “the sensitive period”, is defined as “the period during which a child can
acquire language easily, rapidly, perfectly, and without instruction”. Meanwhile the
common notion is that younger learn L2 easily and quickly in comparison to older
children, yet according to Larsen-Freeman & Long (2008), it is stated that CPH
suggests that a period of time, between birth an somewhere around the age when a child
enters puberty, exists in whihc the learning a second language can be accomplished
more rapidly and easily than times falling outside of this period, i.e. post puberty or

older age. However, factors related to the age, for example the learning opportunities,
the motivation to learn, individual differences, and learning styles, are also important
determining variables that affect the rate of second language learning in various
developmental stages of the learners.

To sum up the analysis above, it can be concluded that there are significant
effects by using the silent way method towards three different classes. The data of mean
score above, it indicates that the fourth graders has the highest mean score amongst
three different classes since they are very interested in learning second language by
using silent way method. It is related to prior research (as cited by Singleton, 2005;
Bista, 2008) have shown the relation between age and learning second language as “the
emphasis on critical period is that encouraging to pay attention when learning happens
and less attention to how learning might occur as well. Learning depends on the
cognitive maturity and neurological factors” Children have a great advantages to learn
naturally and efificiently. They really focus during the teaching learning process which
is interest, coherent, and practical. It will be caused when using this method could be
combined to assist in teaching learning process effectively. In addition, Suroirah (2012)
mentioned that silent way method succeeded in teaching and could save time because of
not repetition. Meanwhile, this method need to add some elements to make the learning
process more effective. There are four elements such as combining method, classroom
observation, use instructional media and grouping students.
