MORE NURSING COLLEGES NEEDED


FIFTEEN more nursing colleges are needed to overcome a shortage of
medical staff.
The Public Health Ministry wants the Cabinet to consider building them for
a cost of 9.38 billion baht.
The new colleges together with the existing ones would be able to train 80
percent of the nurses the country needs, according to Public Health Minister, Arthit
Ourairat.
At present, the ministry needs another 17,600 nurses, he said. The shortage
has made nurses’ work more difficult, as each has to help up to 1,300 patients a
day.
Nurses spend an average of five hours taking care of general patients and
six hours working with seriously injured people.
If Thailand does not train more nurses, the shortage will get worse every
year, said Dr.Arthit.
