Factual amendments or {additions are identified as such in the standard or in the Explanatory notes Ungiiltig 1 Field of application ‘This standard gives specifications for thread ends and lengths of projection of bolt ends for bolts, screws and similar components with ISO metric screw thread (coarse screw thread) in accordance with DIN 13 Part t and Part 12. Itis {or all standard parts, providing reference is made to this standard. In case of necessity, the letter symbols fea tured here may be used Its recommended that this standard also be adopted for bolts, serews and similar components with ISO metric screw thread which have not been standardized. 2 Dimensions, designation 2.1 Thread ends {bolt ends) Ko Asrolled end") K Chamfered end?) See Explanatory notes. Explanatory notes ‘The harmonization of the content of DIN 78 with ISO 4753 ~ 1983 has not resulted in any alterations which might pre- juidice interchangeability. The dimensions of the various thread ends have remained practically unchanged. Only the specification for the thread run-in has been modified. The indication u= max. 2 P incomplete thread supersedes the previous dimensions 2, and 22 and is also applicable to the transition e. g between the thread and the dog point. The object of this indication is to accommodate the exigencies of manufacturing in a more satisfactory fashion, because for example it is extremely difficult to measure the depth of a point at a thread end accurately, and also because accurately defined dimensions are hardly necessary in this case. The new dimension u also does away with the previous need to subdivide the point depths into two groups, viz. 24 = 1,5 P for normal cases and zy = 2 P for threads rolled after heat treatment In ISO 4753, dimensions based on the thread pitch are specified for scrape points; it was found impossible to approve ‘these dimensions in Germany for operational reasons. The groove rust be capable, in the automobile industry for example, of trapping 3 certain quantity of enamel which had previously penetrated into the female thread. For this reason, the cubic capacity of the groove should be dependent on the thread diameter and not on the pitch “The appropriate Technical Commites of FMV (Fasteners Standards Commitee) has appraved suitable request for revi sion of the ISO docurnent. Thread ends Ak (oval half dog point), Asp (coned half dog point) and Sp2 (point with split pin hole) are not featured in 180 4783, They have, however, been retained in the present standard (as previously) because they are needed nationally ‘and also beceuse they are specified in existing documents, ‘As regards lengths of projection of bolt ends, only the design principles have been mentioned in the present version of the standard, and a few ilustreted examples have been included. This has turned out to be appropriate, because new standards on nuts, €.9. ISO nuts, have been published recently, and they would have necessitated a considerable exten sion of the previous table giving numerical values of lengths of projection of bolt ends; these values can be determined without difficulty for every type of nut in accordance with the equations given in clause 3.
