Edu 470 Teaching Philosophy

Paper

In my classroom, I will implement the grade- level outcomes for K-12 Physical

Education and use that as a guide for the goals I set for my students. In elementary

school, I will put emphasis on the students learning the fundamental motor skills, such

as running, catching, skipping, leaping, etc. By the end of grade five, students will be

able to demonstrate competence in fundamental motor skills and a selected

combination of fundamental motor skills. Regarding short sided tasks, these students

will then be able to use a combination of these skills. In middle school, by the time

students reach grade eight, they will be able be able to demonstrate fundamental

movement skills in a variety of ways. Students will then have the ability to utilize

strategies and tactics in modified game play. In high school, the focus should be on

students practicing proper fitness to ensure physical health beyond my physical

education class. In my classroom, students will learn about the 5 health-related

components of fitness. I will also implement team sports such as volleyball, basketball,

and football and racquet games like pickle ball and badminton.

Once my goals are set, I will put my plans into action. In elementary school, I will

teach the fundamental motor skills by going through the progressions of each skill. I will

explain the proper way to execute each skill with the help of cues as a visual aid for the

students. Then I will have the students practice these skills to perfect the execution.

Once the students start learning more skills, I will implement short sided sided tasks that

utilize these skills to help the students combine different motor skills. A strategy I would

put students into groups of threes. I believe this method is effective because it will

practice the affective domain as well by having the students the students practicing
respect for one another. In middle school, I will have my class utilize utilize the

movement concepts in a variety of ways. In my classroom when students are

participating in modified game play, they will apply tactics and strategy. An example of

the tactics or strategy I would use is have a student run about five feet then go left, and

the student throwing the ball would lead the person catching it. This implements the

motor skills of running, catching, and throwing and also challenges the student to

estimate the runners path. To address physical fitness in high school, I would take the

students to the track or take them to the workout room if the school has the necessary

facilities. In terms of team sports like volleyball, football, and basketball, I would have 2-

3 days of learning the basic skill set. Then, I would create fair and equal teams where

the students will play in games against other students in class to help them understand

the etiquette and what it is like to play in a volleyball game.

Assessment is the key to a continual evolving approach to teaching.I believe this

is important because it will help the students understand their strengths and weakness.

As well as help me as a teacher understand what I need to practice in class to help my

students improve. In elementary school, I will assess the students each year using pre

tests and posts tests. The tests will consists of the skills they have learned and will

introduce new skills. When they reach fifth grade, all the 16 fundamental motor skills will

be on the post and pre tests. In middle school, I will assess the students’ knowledge of

strategies and tactics that they learned in each unit and how the fundamental motor

skills were used in each unit. In high school, I will test my students on the five fitness

health-related components and the different skills we learned in the team sports units.
In terms of my beliefs, inclusion is very important to me. I feel that everyone

should have a chance to participate and succeed. That is why in my classroom we will

celebrate diversity and set up ground rules for student interaction. Groups will be well

thought out and always changing so that no one is excluded or feels left out, and I will

always use language that puts the individual before the skill at hand. I will preach space

awareness to the students, so it can help ensure that the students are safe as that is the

most important task at hand. When teaching the students in high school how to workout,

I will make it mandatory that they have a spotter and they not exceed the limits set to

ensure student safety. I will take a holistic approach and create a welcoming and safe

environment where the student is actively engaged in physical activity-an atmosphere

that both challenges the students and allows them to experience the joy of sport.
