CarlosSince it was launched in 1970, Renault 4 had pursued one goal: to become the

first car for thousands of Colombians whose income did not allow them to buy a new car.
However, this goal would not be an easy task, since Renault 4 had to compete with the
large American vehicles which were already consolidated in the consumer's mind for a long
time and with other small cars that grew in the small local market of that time, such as the
Simca 1000, the Fiat 128 or the Fiat Polski 125p.
In addition, many people saw Renault 4 as a small, fragile and ugly vehicle so in order to
counteract such impressions and make the Colombian motorist consider it as the best
purchase option, Sofasa and the main producers of that country, organized a Rally
throughout Colombia which was intended to present their vehicles as the one capable of
facing different difficulties proposed by national highways.
Sergio Such Rallye was the precedent of the great affection that Renault 4 won in the hearts
of millions of Colombians, since that moment people began to understand the great benefits
that this rare car had over its competitors.
Thus, thousands of people quickly went with Renault sellers to buy their R4, since at that
time the government of President Misael Pastrana created a flexible line of credit to
encourage the purchase of this car.
R4 was the first vehicle assembled and then manufactured by the Sofasa plant. From
that moment, the faithful friend, nickname provided by the Colombian people, became a
symbol, and a change of the Colombian automobile culture, it was the first new car of many
families and young people, allowing the company to consolidate the brand in the country.

Jimmy Renault 4 remained on the market for 22 years, approximately 100,000 units
were produced, and won the nickname “The Faithful Friend or The Colombian Car
In 197,6 the first evolution of Renault 4 appeared in Colombia. It was fully developed in
Sofasa.
