Paragraph 1 While most 16-year old boys enjoy playing computer games or kicking a football in a park, Lewis Clarke enjoys more extreme activities. On 18 January 2014, Lewis made history and became the youngest person to ski to the South Pole. This was an incredible 700-mile route from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. Before Lewis, 18-year-old Canadian Sarah McNair Landry was the youngest person to achieve this. Paragraph 2 It took three years to plan the trip and a lot of training. Lewis travelled with Carl Alvey, a 30- year-old polar guide. They prepared for the trip by training in Norway and Greenland. Lewis, did a two-week polar training course in Norway and completed an expedition along the coast of Greenland. Lewis also did training in Bristol, his home city in England. He spent months practising pulling heavy weights behind him to improve his strength. Amazingly, Lewis had never skied cross-country before the trip. Paragraph 3 They started their trip on 2 December 2013, two weeks after Lewis’ 16th birthday. It took them 48 days to reach the South Pole and it was hard physical work. They skied for eight or nine hours a day and had to pull their tent and food behind them. The only day they rested was Christmas Day. They spent this day reading and opening a few small presents. On most days they skied for about 18 miles. Lewis said that the final day of the trip was definitely the hardest as they were so tired. Paragraph 4 Of course, the weather made the trip very difficult. Normally the cold isn't a problem for Lewis he often chooses to wear shorts in the winter and admits he prefers snow to heat. However, Antarctica is the coldest continent on earth, and nothing could prepare Lewis for the extreme weather. The temperature was as low as -50°C and wind speeds reached 60 miles er hour. They ate freeze-dried food every day. They prepared their meals by adding melted snow to the dried food. Lewis said he did not enjoy these meals at all and looked forward to real food at the end of the trip. Paragraph 5 So how do Lewis' parents feel about their son's world record? The answer is ‘extremely proud’. Of course they were very worried about Lewis during the trip, but they are happy that, Lewis achieved his dream. During the trip Lewis spoke to his parents by satellite phone once a week. He even spoke to his classmates at his school back in Bristol. Lewis does not have any immediate plans to go on another polar trip. For now, he is studying for his exams and giving talks about his experience to other young people.
