Internship Job Title:​ Student Intern in the Rehabilitation Facility

BACKGROUND
The opportunity to serve as an intern at South County Hospital arose when I contacted the
volunteer and internship director in February 2020. I expressed my interest for the hospital and
interviewed with a professional working in the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation clinic and
attended a volunteer information session in March 2020. I was fortunate enough to be offered in
an internship during the summer, however due to the impact of COVID-19 all internships were
suspended until further notice. It was not until late August that I received the email that they
were accepting interns for the Fall 2020 semester and that I was awarded the opportunity.

PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES
Create a 15 minute presentation on a health related issue
● Choose a topic and research materials through valid online resources
● Research about the topic and how the health care staff can help these patients and the
effects exercise has on the disease
● Highlight important information and create a presentation
● Invite hospital staff from South County to view my presentation and ask questions
regarding the material
● Create and post in-service flyers for the presentation to encourage a larger turnout

Gain a better understanding of how to help patients gain their strength back
● Assist patients on a stair obstacle
● Provide patients with the proper tools to better their strength, i.e. crutches, canes, etc
● Works alongside PTs, OTs, and PTAs and develop a routine for the patient
● Perform and review basic patient exercise programs and patient education

Create and update daily patient list as well as surgery schedules


● Evaluate the surgery schedule sent out each day and document the orthopedic ones for
the following day
● Review the previous days chart and update any patients who have been discharged or
are priority evaluations for the next day
● Make an organized schedule with following up patients and surgerys for the
rehabilitation staff members

Update KIN 484 orientation binder
● Read over the binder information and revise the binder to make it more concise and
easy to read
● Remove any unnecessary information or reword information to make it flow better for
future URI Kinesiology student interns
● Make a handout for the binder regarding COVID-19 protocols that interns must abide by
for the Spring ‘21 semester

Become a professional working in the hospital during a global pandemic


● Refresh up on my anatomy terminology and be able to incorporate terminology in patient
care with the other rehabilitation staff members
● Use my basic computer skill knowledge to create daily patient and surgery lists for the
rehabilitation health staff to utilize
● Comply with all the COVID-19 protocols by wearing a surgical mask and gloves while in
the hospital and make sure to sanitize equipment and hands after every interaction with
a patient
● Develop professional and appropriate communication skills while working with patients
and rehabilitation health staff

DETAILS
Duties Include
● Adhering to all the COVID-19 guidelines and not working or coming into contact with
patients who test positive
● Monitor the stock room with supplies for the rehabilitation facility and contact the
appropriate medical staff when supplies (i.e. wheelchairs, crutches, etc) are low
● Interact with rehabilitation facility staff and make daily patient lists and surgery lists daily
● Provide rehabilitation/physical therapy needs to patients by walking them around and
assisting them on the stairs to slowly build up their endurance and health
● Update and revise the KIN 484 orientation binder
Evaluation Methods
● Consistent communication with rehabilitation supervisor via email, text messaging, or
in-person contact
● Review COVID-19 symptoms and sign documentation to validate that I do not have any
symptoms nor have been in contact with someone who does, and have not traveled to a
hot-spot area within the past 14 days
● Complete URI Kinesiology time card each Sunday and complete any other forms needed
Expected Workdays
● Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8am - 5pm
● Friday 8am - 2pm
● Start date: September 28, 2020, End date: December 9, 2020
● Dates and times may change depending on holidays and make-up hours needed
