A strength of this activity is that it scaffolds the information really well, which would
be advantageous for low SES otudonte as it makes it moro effectively
‘communicated. Freebody (2007) argues that pedagogical techniques should be
varied throughout the class in order to accomodate, not only for the evolving
‘communication patterns of students, but also a growing necessity across different
‘curriculum arcas as the construction of knowledge deviates from verbal
‘communication. Callow and Orlando suggest that we should attempt to “synergise
sereen-based and face-to-face teaching to support learning" (Callow and Orlando,
2015, p. 360)
Another aspect of the lesson plan which could be improved is that the lesson activity,
involves a very narrow range of learning activities (Predominantly class discussion
‘and observing a printed worksheet). A proposal to improve this would be to, rather
than simply instructing students to make observations of molecules which have
already been named, get students to draw up the chemical structures for themselves
on the computer using the website ‘ChemSpider’. By using the given chemical
structures to draw the molecules into the program for themselves, not only would the
students be building on their knowledge on the structure of molecules in the first
place, but they would also be more likely to notice if @ particular element, such as
oxygen, were to be used more frequently compared to the other elements. Clear description of
