Reconstruction in North Carolina
In many ways, ending the Clvil War only started problens at hone in North
Carolina. The 40,000 dead Tar Weel soldiers were only pare of the price
paid for the war. Families were split, homes destroyed, the economy in
Twins, Men returning from war, or running from tt, became scavengers
(thieves who took anything they could find). ‘The paper dollars of the

Former slaves had real problems too, There were 350,000 in North
Carolina--and go one took care of them anymore. There were no jobs~-how
could they survive? Many of them stayed where they had been, They
became sharecroppers. They grew crops for,a share of the crop. A famous
North Carolina black man, James Hl, Harris, told the former slaves not to
expect the government to take care of then. In 1865, black leaders net
in Raleigh to demand their civil rights, (the rights ell citizens have).
But the North Carolina government gave then fever rights thon whites had
and vould not let them vote. The United State government set up
Freedmen's Bureaus to help blacks get a start in life. They buile 400
schools for 20,000 black students as well as some hospitals.
North Carolina, along with the other southern states, was still not a
part of the Union, President Andrew Jobnson appointed Willdan Holden
-governor. In 1865 a new constitutional convention repealed (did avay
with) the succession and also abolished slavery. Johnathan Worth

The United States government passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867. which

General David Sickles was a{litary governor of District 2, which included
North Carolina. A new convention of 1868 drew up a new constitution,
vith fifteen biecks involved, and black civil rights were ensured

North Carolina hed numerous problems, Many members of the governnent
were dishonest. The Ky Klux Kinn was active. Carpetbaggers~-Yankees who
came to take advantage of the South--aleo caused problens. The
government was so bad that Governor Holden was finally removed from
office. He. ts the only Nocth Carolina governor ever removed from offica.
