Cline Design has designed hundreds of multi-family, mixed use, retail
and hospitality projects throughout the southeast and beyond.
- Produced architectural drawing sets at SD, DD, CD, and CA levels.
Sets include slab plans, floor plans, building/wall sections, elevations,
RCP’s, hardware schedules, storefront schedules, and renders.
- Used architectural and structural-based external reference drawing
files as backgrounds for communication, electrical, HVAC mechanical
and structural revisions.
- Researched building codes and properly applied to designs.
- Analyzed project feasibility and costs prior to drafting designs.

UTOPIAN HOUSING
What if one building could solve 50% of Charlotte’s affordable housing crisis? The city of Charlotte, North Carolina,
has dealt its affordable housing situation a bad hand. The demand exceeds its existence, while its availability is limited
to specific housing types. Through survey and research, Charlotte is home to 4 main housing “lifestyles”. Market rate,
dormitory, town home, and urban housing. Using the aggressive vertical and horizontal span of steel, tray like floor
plates can be stacked on one another with a minimal footprint. Long span floor depth trusses, no internal structure, thin
as possible floor plates.

FLOODED VIEWS
Like the wine it stores and produces, the following winery ages with time. Located on a floodplain and
alongside a river, the winery houses voided areas which flood for 3 months during the year. As the winery
is flooded, the water reacts to the building materials, changing its color over time, allowing it to act as a
chameleon on the site. This reaction also exemplifies the properties of wine, through its fermentation and
breathing over time.

KAWS WAREHOUSE
Reacting to the sculptures it houses, the following warehouse uses its structural members to express tension. The space
frame reacts to programmatic division, changing in deviation. As the space frame deviates its members become more
dense, expressing tension. The ceiling height and deviation spans are also in tune with artists KAWS’s sculptures. The art-
ist’s sculptures are designed for interior display, but is frequently limited to museum spaces that have low ceiling spans.

NEWBOUND PANELS
The following project was based on the experimentation of Cross Laminated Timber panels (CLT), to test its structural properties/
integrity and how it can drive the design of a building. Due to the density of MDF fibers within the CLT, as well as its 5 layer sys-
tem, its structural integrity stands even when trimming at the panels to create voided spaces. These voided spaces inspired the
design of a New-Balance shoe warehouse, allowing the design to react to the performance and aesthetic of the branded shoe.

SUBTRACTING STEEL
The following project was based on the experimentation of castellated steel beams. The main drive was to use the beams to
its utmost structural limit before it becomes structurally obsolete. Through this design initiative a steel pavilion developed. The
primary and secondary members of the pavilion are angled in an almost sculptural form to showcase the expressive limitation of
castellated steel beams.
