Super Linear is a technique used to maximize usable linear power while minimizing
size, weight, and power consumption.
Most traditional HPAs are designed to run from small signal to saturated power. In
practice however, the true usable power in a typical uplink application is limited by
linearity requirements set by Intelsat and other satellite organizations. Thus, while power
back off of 3 to 7 dB is all that is ever required, one still needs the top end peak power to
avoid clipping of the transmitted signal. This clipping results in Intermodulation
products, spectral regrowth, and other non-linearities. Operating power must be limited to
a maximum –3 dB from the maximum peak power for low bit-error rates when
transmitting QPSK, QAM, CDMA, and OFDM signals.
The TWT and high power amplifier (HPA) can be optimized to work best at the 3 dB
backoff point (half average power). This results in a more efficient tube at the true
operating point. Internal TWT and amplifier temperatures are reduced, required amplifier
prime power is minimized, and HPA size and weight are dramatically reduced.
A comparison of the specifications of CPI’s Super Linear 2250 W HPA against those of
traditional TWTAs and SSPAs shows a 30% reduction in size, a 20% reduction in
weight, and a 25-70% reduction in prime power, with no degradation in the linear
performance at backoff. This is a rare case of ‘win-win-win,’ with no penalty for the
extra performance. Predistortion linearizers are highly effective with the Super Linear
HPA, and as with traditional HPAs are recommended for maximum carrier traffic.
Internal alarm and fault levels are set in the HPA to automatically avoid excessive body
current if driven past 3 dB backoff. The intermod and spectral regrowth specifications are
the same as they are rated for a traditional, full-CW HPA, typically –24 dBc intermods or
6 dBc spectral regrowth. Super Linear TWTAs are now available in C- and Ka-band.

INTRODUCTION
This brochure provides a detailed description of the Communications & Power Industries
(CPI) C-band SuperLineartm TWT High Power Amplifier (SL-TWTA): the TL22CI
series. This SL-TWTA is unique in design, incorporating a CPI-developed, dual-
depressed collector TWT. This design allows for a smaller, more efficient, and cooler-
running amplifier than any other high-powered TWTA on the market, translating into
lower energy costs and longer life for TWTs and other electronic parts. As with all CPI
Satcom Division products, a microprocessor-based control system makes it easy to
include the SL-TWTA as part of the station’s overall monitoring and remote control
systems.
The SL-TWTA is part of a broad line of communications power amplifiers that includes
TWT Power Amplifiers (TWTAs) and Klystron Power Amplifiers (K-HPAs), and Solid
State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs). All of these products are built for the standard
commercial satellite uplink bands.
CPI (formerly Varian Electron Device Group) has been active in the design and
manufacture of microwave power amplifiers and related products for more than 30 years.
CPI Satcom Division (formerly Varian MEP) was organized in the mid-1970s to bring
together the strengths of existing groups involved with commercial Satcom and Industrial
power amplifiers into a single business unit.
Since then, CPI Satcom Division has provided thousands of fully integrated satellite
uplink power amplifiers in S, C, X, Ku, DBS and Ka-band frequency ranges worldwide,
establishing itself as the leading supplier of this class of products.
General
The TL22CI series provides 2.25 kW of peak RF output power at the TWT, instantaneous
over the 5.85 – 6.65 GHz frequency range, with options for 5.85 – 6.725 GHz or 5.725 –
6.525 GHz operation. This amplifier’s compact, single-drawer design provides state-of-
the-art modularity for ease of use and maintenance.
The RF drawer houses the RF chain (solid state IPA, dual-depressed collector TWTA,
high power output isolator, and associated couplers and isolators), TWTA blower, front
panel, and necessary elements of the embedded controller system, including external
interfaces. The RF drawer also contains the optional ethernet adapter.
The control panel (see Figure 1) located on the RF drawer, contains a large color TFT-
LCD display with wide look angle, LEDs, and a durable, membrane-style keypad. The
controls interface directly with the earth station M&C computer system. The control
design is directly adapted from the highly reliable Gen IV KPA. A remote control panel
with all-identical functions and configuration is available as an option.
The power supply drawer houses the AC input filtering, monitoring, and high voltage
power supply. The high voltage power supply provides regulated beam, heater, and
collector voltages to the TWT. An element of the embedded controller system, located in
the power supply drawer controls and monitors this assembly. The TL22CI Series is
adaptable to all primary 3-phase voltages available around the world.
All serviceable parts are mounted on chassis slides, providing quick and easy access for
maintenance. The SL-TWTA is protected from damage caused by AC/DC/RF faults and
insufficient cooling, and will automatically recycle after a prime power interruption or
transient fault. Personnel safety is further assured by proper grounding and the use of
shields and warning signs on all areas of access to voltages above 40V.
A number of options and accessories are available as well as redundant switching and
phase combining.
RF Circuit
Input Circuit
Referring to the RF Block Diagram, Figure 2, the low-level input signal is applied at the
back of the RF box into an N-type isolator, which maintains the VSWR, as seen by the
source, to a ratio of 1.25:1 or less. The signal is then fed to the solid-state driver (IPA),
which includes a voltage-controlled PIN diode attenuator, input/output isolators and
The attenuator permits the operator to adjust the RF drive level up to 30 dB with quick
response, good linearity, and a resolution of 0.1 dB. Memory is used to return the SL-
TWTA to the previously set level in the event of primary power outages. The IPA also
includes an RF inhibit function to remove the drive signal during faults, channel changes,
transfer switch operations, or external interlock actions.
The block upconverter (BUC) option is used with systems that utilize L-band modems.
The BUC converts 950-1750 MHz input to 5.85 – 6.65 GHz output with good frequency
stability.
TWT
The improved TWTs used in the TL22CI series incorporate an advanced design, utilizing
dual-depressed collectors designed to deliver up to 2.25 kW peak output across the
specified frequency band. The TWT is designed to work best at 3 dB backoff for
linearity. More than 2,000 TWTs of this family have been delivered during the past
twelve years. Reliability has been excellent, with demonstrated MTBF exceeding 35,000
hours.
Output Circuit
The output of the TWT fed to the integrated output waveguide assembly comprised of the
circulator/loads, harmonic filter and three-port directional coupler.
The high power isolator provides a low VSWR source to the external waveguide run and
antenna feed, and protects the TWT from excessive high reflected power resulting from
external faults. The isolator will continuously dissipate the reflected power of a 2.0:1
VSWR load (11 percent of the rated power), and will withstand safely reflected power
equal to the full rated output of the SL-TWTA until the protection circuits shut off the RF
signal. The harmonic filter attenuates the second harmonic to levels at least 60 dB below
the fundamental output.
The metering signals are also used to activate the high/low RF power alarm and the high-
reflected-power fault protection circuit. The standard output RF interface is CPR-137F
waveguide flange.
The three-phase primary line enters the power supply (see Block Diagram in Figure 1)
through an easily mated commercial connector. At the time of order 208 VAC or
380/415 VAC operation should be specified. The amplifier will operate ±10% from
nameplate input voltage over 47 to 63 Hz.
From the input connector, AC power is routed through an EMI filter, and then on to the
main circuit breaker located on the power supply’s front panel. AC power then passes
through the step start circuit, which is used to limit in-rush current to <180% of steady
state during HV turn-on. From there, the AC power is rectified and filtered, then passed
to the power processor.
The power processor converts the DC voltage to a 50 kHz AC voltage that is applied to
the HV transformer and rectifier. The HV rectifier’s output provides cathode, heater, and
collector voltages which are sampled and filtered on the HV filter/feedback board, then
sent to the RF box where they are applied to the TWT. Cathode and heater voltage
samples are fed from the HV filter/feedback board to the power processor as part of the
regulation scheme. Cathode voltage, beam current, helix current, heater voltage, and
heater current are monitored by the embedded control system.
A three-phase branch circuit supplies power to the RF section for the TWT blower and
DC power supplies for optional switch system.
The control and monitor system is designed to assure correct operation of the power
amplifier and is easily maintained with minimal operator training and intervention. A
system of embedded controllers provides automatic sequencing of the SL-TWTA
voltages and continuous monitoring of critical parameters. A large, color TFT-LCD panel
(with wide viewing angle) clearly displays all operational information. All meter displays
are shown at the same time in both color coded bar graph and digital format. Fault and
When control power is applied, the embedded control system self-tests internal functions
and initiates heater warm-up. Once the heater warm-up time delay is completed, the
standby indicator illuminates, signaling the operator that the beam voltage can be applied.
Depressing the Transmit key initiates normal operation. The controls can be keyed to
automatic leveling, which maintains a set output power against RF input variations.
Alternatively, the operator may depress the transmit key during the warm-up cycle, in
which case the beam voltage is applied automatically at completion of the warm-
up cycle.
In the event of AC prime power interruptions, the power supply will automatically
recycle to its pre- power-failure state when the AC power is reapplied. If the amplifier
was in the Transmit state prior to loss of AC power and the loss of power is less than a
few seconds, the amplifier will return immediately to the Transmit state. If the outage is
of longer duration, a proportional heater warm-up delay is inserted, after which the
amplifier transitions to the Transmit state. Maximum initial heater warm-up time is five
minutes.
The amplifier’s fault handling is tolerant of transient faults, returning the amplifier to the
state in which the fault occurred if appropriate. A Recycled Fault LED will blink on the
front panel to indicate that a properly functioning amplifier has experienced a problem.
If a fault occurs that warrants the permanent shutdown of the amplifier (high voltage is
turned off), the fault(s) will be clearly displayed with time and date stamp. To restart the
unit, the fault source must be cleared, and the Cancel key must be pressed in order to
reset the amplifier. To aid in fault troubleshooting, fault, activity and meter logs are kept
with time and date stamps. These may be read on the large color front panel display or
downloaded via the serial port. The control system also provides operational alarms.
The TL22CI’s event log stores fault, alarm and amplifier activity in addition to meter
readings that are taken once every five seconds. To make the best use of the memory
available for the event log, a memory saving algorithm eliminates redundant readings so
that long term trends, such as a rise in helix current, may be readily observed. Meter
readings associated with the fault events are always saved as a troubleshooting aid. The
event log will hold at least five years worth of amplifier activity, or around 2000 entries.
External interface connections are located on the rear of the RF chassis, and include serial
ports for a remote control panel, computer interface, and auxiliary interface. Additionally,
switch controller interfaces are available. A built-in switch controller handles up to 1:4
systems. An ethernet adapter and uplink power control are available as options.
The standard TL22CI series permits computer control and monitoring through an
RS-422/485 (4-wire) serial data bus. This capability provides the operator with a
convenient, reliable means to monitor and control the power amplifiers at a remote,
unattended earth station. RS-232 is also available.
Mechanical Design
The TL22CI series is packaged in as single, sturdy, aluminum enclosure that provides
convenient access for service and maintenance. The amplifier is designed to be mounted
in standard 19” racks using chassis slides.
The power supply is designed with major testpoints accessible without removing the
cover. If servicing is required, the power supply is modular and designed to allow quick
troubleshooting at the subassembly level. Mean time to repair (MTTR) is typically 30
minutes.
The SL-TWTA is designed for space-constrained locations. Each amplifier is 15.75” high
(9 RU), providing for 22.75” of extra space per standard rack when three SL-TWTAs are
mounted together. About 3 feet (1 m) of space should be reserved in front of the rack for
pulling the chassis out. All electrical interface connections and exhaust ducting for the
TWT cooling air are at the rear. Nearly all maintenance activities can be accomplished
from the front of the equipment.
TL22CI amplifiers are cooled entirely by forced airflow. All required blowers and fans
are built into the RF and power supply enclosures. As with all high value equipment,
use of shelter-conditioned air is highly recommended for maximum reliability.
The enclosure utilizes a large, internally mounted DC blower to cool the TWT’s
collector. Unencumbered by external ducting, this blower provides air mass flow rates of
500 lbs/hour in the C-band amplifier at any prime power voltage or frequency, up to
10,000 feet. This is equivalent to providing 135 cfm of air at sea level. For the collector
cooling, the inlet and outlet ducts are 6” (15.2 cm) and 5” (12.7 cm) respectively and are
flanged. In order to guarantee sufficient air flow, external, customer supplied ductwork
attached to these flanges must introduce no more than 0.5 inch (1.27 cm.) of total
backpressure for each amplifier. This value includes the effects of all bends and air
filters. An air filter which traps at least 70% of particles 5 microns or greater must be
used on the air inlet ductwork. For reliable operation, this filter should be changed
periodically. Consult factory for design assistance.

must be considered when choosing UPS sources.
Environmental
A few options and accessory items have been designed for use with the CPI SL-TWTA.
A brief description of the items now available is as follows.
Ethernet Interface
The ethernet adapter provides another communication port through which the TWTA can
be controlled. The Ethernet adapter provides an industry-standard 10 Base-T interface
that supports the TCP/IP, FTP, and NTP protocols. Because of the Ethernet port’s high
speed, communicating with the amplifier is much faster: log downloads and software
uploads take mere seconds. The FTP protocol allows the user to download logs from, and
upload firmware to, the TWTA.
The Remote Control Panel is a 19 inch rack-mountable, 10.5 inches high, 12 inches deep
and weighs 10 lbs. It mimics all of the controls and indicators of the main (local) control
panel. The Remote Control Panel communicates with the TWTA via serial interface. The
panel requires a source of AC power, and includes the connectors for the interconnect
cable from the SL-TWTA, but normally not the cable, whose length depends on the
specific application. Remote control/monitor panels are also available for use with the
various Switching Subsystems and Phase Combiner Subsystems.
Protection Switching
A 1:1 Switching Subsystem consists of an output waveguide switch and dummy load.
The control is housed inside the amplifier. The waveguide assembly may be mounted
behind or over the SL-TWTAs. The circuit provides 1:1 redundant protection with
automatic transfer or manual operation, local or remote, as selected by the operator. An
optional remote panel is available. Options are also available for the addition of an input
power divider or a ganged input transfer switch.
More complex 1:N switching systems, with optional combining, can also be provided.
Power/Phase Combining
Power/Phase Combiner consists of a coaxial input divider network, phase shifter and an
output waveguide combining system. The combiner is an electrically operated 4 position
device, which provides the following operating modes:
In the normal combining mode a fault in one PA will automatically switch the combiner
to mode (2) or (3), resulting in “soft fail protection,” by providing full output from the
surviving PA. In the manual mode the operator may select any one of the four operating
modes.
The combiner assembly may be mounted in the rack or installed in an auxiliary rack.
Linearizer
Block Up Converter
Incorporating a BUC in CPI amplifiers allows the customer to eliminate the single
transponder up converters used previously. This saves the customer the cost of multiple
up converters, one for each transponder.
CPI's BUCs use DRO (Dielectric Resonant Oscillators) that can operate independently,
or be phase locked to a high-stability reference. The reference signal is brought into the
amplifier by multiplexing the reference onto the cable carrying the input signals, so that
no extra cables are required.
This simplifies the end-user's system design. Options are available for internal, external
or Muxed reference signals. Refer to CPI document MKT-74 for a complete technical
description.
Others
An input drive meter is available for the front panel display, and an Input RF Sample Port
is available via a Type N connector on the rear panel.
Support Services
Documentation
CPI Satcom Division provides a commercial documentation package with all products.
The content of each package is determined by the nature of the product concerned, and
the quantity is governed by contractual requirements. The standard package for Satcom
power amplifiers includes a comprehensive installation and operation manual, outline and
interface drawings, a manufacturing test report and spare parts lists. Outline and interface
drawings provide dimensions and the location and size of mounting holes, duct work and
waveguide, so that site preparations can be accomplished prior to receipt of the
equipment.
The Installation & Operation Manual provides instructions for unpacking and installation,
initial set-up, calibration, normal operation, and routine maintenance of the equipment.
The manual includes schematic diagrams, block diagrams, and wiring information
sufficient for use by maintenance personnel.
The Acceptance Test Report outlines the test performance limits established. Space is
provided on the test report for recording and certifying the test results. The spare parts
documentation consists of a recommended spare parts list to support the equipment for a
one-to-two year period of operation. A CSI Acceptance Test can be performed at
customer’s option, which will repeat and verify results of selected performance tests that
were already recorded in the standard acceptance test. An optional set of acceptance tests
can also be performed.
Training
CPI Satcom Division is prepared to conduct training courses covering the installation,
operation and maintenance of its equipment. The training course on high power
amplifiers consists of lectures using training material, such as technical service manuals
and drawings, plus actual operation and adjustments demonstrated on the equipment.
Small training groups (up to five students) assure the customer that each student has an
opportunity to participate fully in demonstration activities. Courses may be conducted at
the CPI factory or on-site. Course duration varies from one to two days, depending on the
scope of work agreed upon.
Field Service
The product support activity of CPI includes a staff of experienced, professional service
technicians to assist users in maintaining full performance from their CPI power
amplifiers. A telephone “hot line” permits access to one of these technicians on a 24-hour
per day basis. Operational problems often can be diagnosed, corrective action prescribed,
and normal operation restored through telephone consultation. When appropriate, service
technicians are prepared to give on-site assistance.
Product Support carries a large inventory of spare parts that can be made ready for
shipment within 24 hours. Coupled with a dedicated dial-in telephone line, this service is
effective in aiding users to restore equipment to operational status with minimum
downtime. Technical assistance and factory approved replacement parts are also available
at strategically located Regional Service Centers in the U.S.A., India, South America,
Africa, Europe and the Pacific Rim.
