3.1 Introduction

Before contacting Assistance, please be ready with the following elements:

• Nos. of the procedures implemented (G01 to G11),
• The sequence used (S0x),
• The stage you have reached (depends on the procedure being used).

3.2 Example of the type of information you need to provide

You have implemented procedure G10 (Wipers), sequence S06 corresponding to « Check
on the rear screen wiper function » and you have arrived at stage N° 2.1 in the flow chart.
You will say to your contact : G10 - S06 - 2.1.

4 Recommendations - precautions

Before any consequent operation, it is essential to check :

• the battery voltage,
• the fuses,
• that the shunt is correctly positioned on the BSI (the shunt should be in the “Customer”
position),
• that the BSI is not in back-up mode (see : “Preliminary checks on the BSI” below).

Page 4 / 18
5 Functions

Windscreen wipe is commanded electrically by the Engine Relay Unit, directly to the wiper
motor.
Rear screen wipe in slow speed is commanded electrically by the BSI.

Observation :
The Engine Relay Unit has only an actuator role. It is the BSI that gives it the order to
activate screen wipe via the Body CAN network, as a function of the request received from
the switch module under the steering wheel.

5.1 The rain sensors

The rain sensors on C4 and New Look C5 are multiplexed.

The sensitivity of the rain sensor is determined by a calibration file downloaded into the
rain/sunlight sensor.
Downloading of a new calibration is possible using a Lexia or Proxia diagnostic tool
(depending on availability of new adjustments).
Note : The calibration contains adjustments for the sensor for detection of rain and
detection of sunlight.

5.2 Activation of automatic wipe

Activation of the automatic wipe function :

• is by moving the wiper stalk to the « Auto » position (sequentially on C4),
• is confirmed by one sweep of the windscreen wipe in slow speed.

After the ignition has been switched off, it is necessary to reactivate the automatic wipe
function each time when restarting.

Page 5 / 18
5.3 Back-up modes of the automatic wipe function

In the event of a problem with at least one of the components of the windscreen wipe
function, a back-up mode is activated :
• If there is a malfunctioning of the switch module under the steering wheel (or of the
FCC steering wheel), the windscreen wipe functions in intermittent wipe,
• If there is a malfunctioning of the Engine Relay Unit, the windscreen wipe functions in
slow speed.

6 Preliminary checks

6.1 Configuration

A certain number of configuration parameters are memorised in the BSI :

• parameter « Rain sensor option » (yes/no),
• parameter « Rain/sunlight sensor option » (yes/no),
• parameter « Presence of screen wipe in reverse gear » (yes/no),
• parameter « Rear screen wipe option » (absent/present).

WARNING : The display of the configuration parameters depends on their presence in the
BSI software.
The parameters featured will be displayed by the diagnostic tool either partially or in totality
according to the software edition in the BSI.

You can access the parameters after starting communication with the BSI using a
diagnostic tool and having selected the menu « MANUAL PROGRAMMING » then
« CONFIGURATION » then « LIGHTING – SIGNALLING – VISIBILITY - REAR VIEW
MIRRORS ».

Stage 1
Identification of a BSI in back-up mode:

- First case: When the ignition is switched on and the lighting stalk is in position
0, the vehicle’s sidelamps (front or rear or both) come on.

- Second case: With the engine running, the dipped beam headlamps come on,
the windscreen wiper operates in intermittent wipe or in slow speed.

7 Diagnosis of the windscreen wipe function

7.1 [G10][S01] When switched off, the windscreen wipe does not stop in the correct
position

If the windscreen wipe does not stop in a position that is correct, without any other
symptom present on the vehicle : The BSI is not the cause, replacement prohibited.

Direct your searches to the wiper motor, the Engine Relay Unit and the harness between
these two components.

7.2 [G10][S02] The sensitivity of automatic mode is not satisfactory

This is the case when the activation seems too slow or too rapid.
Operations to be carried out (without a diagnostic tool) :
• check the functioning of the rain sensor (with water),
• check that the inside of the windscreen is clean,
• check the positioning of the sensor on the windscreen.

Operations to be carried out with a diagnostic tool:

• check the presence of a recent calibration in the rain sensor.

WARNING : The BSI is not the cause, replacement prohibited.

Page 11 / 18
7.3 [G10][S03] Other symptoms : diagnosis of the windscreen wipe function (in slow
speed mode and fast speed mode)

Operations to be carried out:

• read the fault codes in the BSI,
• read the faults log,
• deal with any faults relating to windscreen wipe.

If all the following conditions are met :

• partial or total malfunctioning concerning only windscreen wipe slow speed mode
and fast speed mode,
• no BSI back-up mode,
• no fault in communication on the switch module under the steering wheel (or FCC
steering wheel) in the BSI,
• no fault in communication between the Engine Relay Unit and the BSI,

then the BSI is not the cause, replacement prohibited.

After performing the basic checks (fuses, continuity of electrical harnesses), direct your
searches to the following components :
• the switch module under the steering wheel (or FCC steering wheel),
• the Engine Relay Unit.

8 Diagnosis of the rear screen wipe function

Out of the following procedures, carry out the one that corresponds to the symptoms on
the vehicle.

8.1 [G10][S04] When switched off, the rear screen wipe does not stop in the correct
position

Operations to be carried out:

• Using a diagnostic tool, start communication with the BSI,
• Select the MENU « Parameter Measures » then « Visibility » and perform the following
operations :
• Operate the rear screen wipe and observe the parameter « Information on rear screen
wipe fixed stop ».
If the parameter does not change status regularly (Yes / No) when the wiper is operating,
check the cabling and the functioning of the fixed stop switch incorporated in the rear
screen wiper motor.

If the fixed stop switch incorporated in the rear screen wiper motor and the electrical
cabling are in good condition, the BSI is faulty, its replacement is authorised.
