Vorwort. Der Herausgeber hat davon abgesehen die noto- rischen Irrtiimer, welche das in der Kénigl. Bibliothek in Berlin befindliche, von Bachs Gattin geschriebe- ne sog. Originals sowie die ailteren im Druck vorhandenen Ausgaben enthalten und mit denen die grosse ,Bach-Ausgabe“ bereits aufgeriumt hat, hier zur Vergleichung anzufiihren. Nur solche Stellen, die verschiedene Lesarten logischerweise méglich erscheinen lassen, wurden beriicksichtigt.— Die Kintragung von Vortragszeichen sohienen dem Herausgeber geboten, weil, einerseits Bogen- stricharten und Fingersatze meist nur im Zusammen- hang mit der Dynamik richtig gegeben und verstanden werden kénnen; andrerseits aus pidagogischen Griin- den. Hierbei wurde nach jenem Prinzip verfahren, das Hans von Biilow in die charakteristischen Worte Kleidete: ,,Jeder Fingersatz ist gut, der die sinn- gemisse Interpunktion unterstiitzt* Selbstverstiindlich soll es aber jeder stilkun- digen, kiinstlerischen Individualitat unbenommen bleiben den Vortrag je nach Temperament und Geschmack frei zu gestalten. ons Remark. The editor has not included the notorious errors contained in the socalled “Original” written by Bach's wife, and preserved in the Royal Library, Berlin, though for the sake of comparison those errors which the large “Rach-Edition” has already done away with are retained in the early printed editions. Only such passages have been taken into consi- deration which may admit of more than one logical interpretation. The editor has considered it ailvisable to repro. duce the signs of interpretation, as on the one hand, the various bowings and fingerings are mostly correct and intelligible only in connection with, and in relation to, the dynamic, on the other hand, for paeda- gogical reasons. In doing $0, the editor has followed up the principle which Hans von Biilow clothed in the following characteristic words: “Bvery fingering is Good which assists that punctuation which is most in keeping with the meaning of the composition.” Of course, it is left to the discretion of the artist's individuatity to interpret the works according to his own temperament and taste.
