Geosynthetic Basal Reinforcement laying sequence

The basal layers of the embankments generally consist of the following components:
i. Prepared Ground Level
ii. Sand cushion layer(if required)/drainage blanket(Gravel or sand of at least 200mm
thickness)
iii. Geosynthetic reinforcement
iv. Sand cushion layer(if required)/drainage blanket(Gravel or sand of at least 200mm
thickness)
v. Geosynthetic reinforcement
vi. Sand cushion layer(if required)/drainage blanket(Gravel or sand of at least 200mm
thickness
vii. Embankment fill
The Geosynthetic reinforcement is placed in between the two layers of gravel or well graded
sand which serves as the drainage layer as well as the frictional layer that fully mobilizes the
tensile strength of the reinforcement. The Geosynthetic reinforcement along with the
granular fill acts as a stiff supporting layer between the embankment and the soft soil.
Drainage blanket should extend beyond the toe of the embankment on either side for a
distance of 50cm (minimum).

Detailed construction procedure followed as per IRC 113:2013.
