However, die surfaces on Cin- citnati Press Brakes extend beyond the housings, so the actual working surface is greater than the rated length, ‘When working between the housings, you can form any size of flange. If you use the overall die surface, the flange width is limited by the depth of the throat, Therefore, the lonsth of the die surface is decided by the length of the work and the width of flange bent Comer A standard bend has an inside radius roughly’ equal to the thickness of the material, Any variation fron this standatd inside radius will change your brake capacity requirements, The effective dic ‘opening controls the inside radius. Ree ‘The thickness rating of a press brake can vary, For example, a brake rated for Sin” can handle %” plate over wider dies to a larger radius of bend. Multiple bends in light gauges may require more capacity than single bends in heavy gauges, Orc id See page 4 for the effect of material on pressure required and bending behavior. Poe oma) While tonnage is sometimes used to express ca- pacity, this gives only half the story, because fly= Wheel energy is needed to exert the necessary pres: sure throughout the entire working stroke. That's why Cincinnati Press Brakes are rated in terms of work: metal thickness of a given Jengtt over a tiven vee die. This rating method includes both tonnage and flywheel energy. Cor oak ‘You cut the costs of assembling formed parts when they fit easily. Special langing or boiler steel is often used te elimi- nate breakage when necessary to bend heavy pla‘c over a small die opening, When making a 90-degree bend, the pressure rises very fast, It reaches 85% of maximum when the metal bent only 20 degrees; and the maximum when bent 40 degrees. Each press brake frame is free from strains which could decrease its accuracy, and the need for stress relieving is avoided. ‘The bed is supported directly by the housings theough the use of accurately fitted beating shoes, Maximum bearing area is provided at this vital support point, sinee cach bearing shoe is hand- seraped to precisely fit both bed and housings. The sketch at the right shows the interlocked! construction principle. ‘The allesteel press brake frame, pio- rcered by The Cincinnati Shaper Com- pany, is your best safeguard against excessive frame deflection and. frame Jailure, Open-throat construction is, standard on all Cincinnati Press Brakes, and permits forming sheets longer than the distance between housings. Deep Beds and Rams The beds and rams of Cincinnati ress Brakes are made dep in order to insure maximum rigidity. Tests prove their working surfaces remain parallel in 0.005" under capacity loads. MACNN FECHANEE www.SterlingMachinery.com Remember, proper alignment of forces is as important and effective in a press brake as in the proper use of a hammer, Cincinnati Large High Strength Radi Large, high strength radii scientifically designed and located, distribute and reduce stresses under loads, Sharp radi, on the other hand, concentrate and greatly inerease the stress and can cause in- accurate work or failure of the frame, MACNN FECHANEE STANDARD FEATURES /section 3 Centerline Loading Centerline Loading is designed into every Cincinnati Press Brake. Instead of being mounted to the side of the housings, the pitmans which drive the ram straddle the housings, as shown above. Also, the housings directly sup- port the bed. The operating forces, therefore, are contained within the housings, Weaving of the frame and ‘eramping of the ram slides. guides and shaft bearings are eliminated Since there are no overhung or e- centric loads to be supported, the Centerline Loading principle makes it possible to concentrate most of the ‘weight of a Cincinnati Press Brake di rectly in the four main members, where it belongs. To the user, this means max- imum strength per pound of machine. www.SterlingMachinery.com 15 16 Take-up caps, Bronze liners. They are specially designed and manufactured for shock loads encountered in press brake operations. ‘A Kennedy-type double key or in- volute spline system is used for securing all gears to theie shafts, Both. systems provide multi-point bearing at these ‘important connections and result in a ‘more satisfactory fit and gear alignment ‘than can be obtained with # single key. Pitman & Slide Assembly Cincinnati pitman and slide assemblies are extra heavy for long life in severe service. ‘The ball seat is hardened and ground, The ram adjusting screws are alloy steel, heat treated, and have buttress threads. No welds are used in securing the saddle to the ram Years of trouble-free service have proved the soundness of Cincinnati design erlingMachinery.com STANDARD FEATURES/ Tilting Ram Adjustment Tilting ram adjustment is a standard Cincinnati feature which makes it possible to compensate for inaccuracies in tooling. It is also useful for fadeout work. This device permits tilting the ram without cramping the guide bearings. Dual indicators read ing in thousandths of an inch are provided for fast, accurate adjustment. They show the amount of adjustment and the amount of tilt, and make it easy to retum the ram parallel to the bed. You ean quickly reproduce any previous job without trial by resetting the adjustment to the indicator reading used previously. Ram adjustment is made with an individual mo- tor furnished as standard equipment. As a safety precaution, a double-acting limit switch is used that will stop the motor without injury if the ram is raised to the top before the swith is thrown out, The switch also limits the downward adjustment of the ram, Swivel End-Guide Bearings Cincinnati swivel end-guide bearings are another exclusive Cincinnati refinement whieh insures ac curacy. Two Inege bronze shoes ave built ito dhe right hand ram slide and maintain accurate end- wise alignment whether the ram is parallel to the bed or tilted. They eliminate all cramping or scor- ing when tilting the ram either up or down, Since the ram slide is free to rotate about the bronze shoes, accurate end-wise alignment is maintained while the ram is tilted. It is not necessary to loosen, any bolts in order to tit the ram. On a Cincinnati, the ram and slide are positively secured to each other by dowels 17 18 MACHINERY ExeWANeR Deep Throats Deep throats, ranging from 8" to 14", are standard Cincinnati features. Extra- Geep throats are available forthe bend- ing of exceptionally wide parts, Accurate Rams Cincinnati rams are accurately ma- chined on their working surface, and are fitted with die clamping bars in 24° sections and serews on 12" centers for holding short dies. The positive lock die clamp prevents dies from pulling out ‘under stripping loads. Springs behind the die clamps make it easy for the op- erator to insert the dies. When required for horizontal strength, Cincinnati rams are equipped with an H beam stiffener. This stiflene: also provides adjustment for maintain- ing the very accurate alignment of the Maximum Cle nce ‘The Cincinnati Press Brakes have max- imum work clearance at the rear for material handling and workmen as wel ‘All shafts are over six feet from the floor. Where more than one operation i required the work can be passed front. to back, avoiding the inconvenience cf ‘turning it end for end. Cincinnati standard bed heights are 32” and 34°, the proper height for comfortable working. www.SterlingMachinery.com Automatic Lubrication = Adequate oiling is assured by an automatic, sight feed, pressure lubricating system that can be ad- justed and serviced from the floor. The reduction, gears, worm and worm wheel of the ram adjusting mechanism run in a bath of oil, Oil is supplied under pressure to the main bearings, eccentric bear ings, and slides and guides. Disc Type Clutch ‘The Cincinnati clutch is of the dise type and is es- pecially designed for press brake work. It is readily accessible, simple to adjust, and exceptionally easy to operate. The clutch is highly efficent and is capable of picking up overloads from a standing start, using very low unit pressures, It is designed for casy control at full ram speed or for frequent starting and stopping. An efficient friction brake automatically stops the ram upon release of the clutch at any point of the stroke, Large Capacity Flywheel Cincinnati flywheels have unusually large eapacity for bending heavy plate, and can perform any maxi- mum rated bend without assistance from the motor. ‘The flywheel is mounted on heavy-duty antifric- tion bearings. No stalling will occur under normal operating conditions due to sound design of the clutch and the powerful drive. However, if through aceident ‘or neglecta stall at the bottom of the stroke should ‘cour, itis only necessary to set the clutch properly, reverse the motor with the reversing switch, and back out, Convenient Controls Operation of Cincinnati Press Brakes can be either bby hand lever, foot treadle, or air-eleetric control, ‘The hexagonal treadle shaft, provided on machines through the Series 34 for manual operation, is, ‘mounted on anti-friction bearings, greatly reducing operator fatigue. The treadle can be placed at any point on the shaft, STANDARD FEATURI Installation ple. At the bottom of the stroke, the ram is once agsin shifted back into ‘high speed for the completion of the eyele. ‘All speed changes are smooth, positive and instan- taneous. Standard high speed is 35 strokes per minute ‘and standard low speed is 5.8 strokes per minute fon 4 and 5 Series machines. Standard high speed i 33 strokes per minute and standard low speed is 7 strokes per minute on 7 and 9 Series machines. Stand tard high and low speeds on 12 and 13 Series mi chines are 30 and 64 strokes per minute respectively. ‘This productive feature eliminates the “whip-up” and “back bending” which occur when fong flexible parts are formed at high speed. It is no longer neces- ‘ary to “slip the clutch” and rely completely on the press brake operator's skill for parts that are free of “back bends." The Cincinnati® Automatic Cycle gives ‘you increased production and eliminates spoiled work. ‘This optional feature is available at extra cost on 4 and 5 Series Cincinnati Press Brakes (100 and 135 tons bending capacity, respectively), on 7 and 9 Series Cincinnati Press Brakes (175 and 225 tons bending Press Brakes ( spectively). creer This 5 series x 10 ft. CYCLE PRESS BRAKES v4, 5, 12 AND 13 SERIES SONTROL SELECTOR ‘The speed control indicator, which is calibrated in both degrees and inches, is positioned to suit the point at which you want the ma- ‘chine to shift from high speed into low speed. With the controt panel selector turned to one of the “Auto” settings, the mac vill shift between high and low speeds automatically on each stroke. ‘The AUTO INCH position lets the machine operate on automatic cycle while the foot switch is depressed. ‘The ram stops when the foot switch is released. "The AUTO RETURN position differs from the “Auto Inch” in that if the foot switeh is released between bottom and top ‘of relurn stroke, the machine continues through the stroke and stops at the top of the stroke. ‘The AUTO NON-REPEAT position provides the same op- eration as “Auto Return” except the machine will automati- cally stop at the top of the stroke independent of the foot switch, To re-eyele, the foot switch is released and the machine goes through the cycle when the foot switch is engaged. INCH LOW and INCH HIGH positions allow the ram to be inched through the entire stroke, in low or high speed re- spectively. ‘The OFF position makes the machine inoperative. 7 AND 9 SERIES CON- TROL SELECTOR THE SIX-POSITION CON- ‘TROL SELECTOR is ex- tremely simple to operate, fand allows six different types of operation. When the selector is tuned to SHORT DWELL, MED- TUM DWELL or LONG DWELL, the Press Brake will operate as described ‘above, That is, the ram is shifted into low speed for the working portion of its stroke. The difference between these three control selections is the length of stroke the ram remains in low speed; we call this the WELL. The ram positions at which the speed changes occur ccan easily be adjusted to suit individual jobs. ‘When the control selector is turned to the HIGH position, the ram may be jogged to bottom dead center in high speed; beyond this point it automatically returns to the top of its stroke in high w IK posi- 3 allow the ire stroke, ‘Ny eenser www.Sterli Here's How It Works The ram runs down in high speed, uit just above work.
