What is it about?
The cultural heritage of the European Union is a rich and diverse
mosaic of cultural and creative expressions, our inheritance from
previous generations of Europeans and our legacy for those to come.
Why is it needed?
Cultural heritage enriches the individual lives of citizens, is a driving
force for the cultural and creative sectors, and plays a role in creating
and enhancing Europe's social capital.
The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union gives the Commission the
specific tasks of contributing to the flowering of culture in the Member
States, while respecting their diversity, and bringing "the common
cultural heritage to the fore" (art. 167 TFEU).
The European Union's role is, therefore, to assist and complement the
actions of the Member States in preserving and promoting Europe's
cultural heritage.
