SALTWATER INTRUSION

Intrusion or seawater infiltration into mainland aquifers on basically is the process of entry of
subsurface seawater through aquifers on land or coastal areas. If the seawater has flowed into
wells on land, then the water supply becomes useless because the aquifers have been polluted
by seawater. Underground water that was previously suitable for drinking water, due to
seawater intrusion, then a gradation of quality occurs so that it is no longer suitable for
drinking water. Saltwater infiltration can occur, among others, due to a decrease in
groundwater level or pisometric fields in coastal areas, excessive underground water pumping
in coastal areas, the entry of seawater into the land through rivers, canals, channels, swamps.
There are several ways to solve intrusion problems. one way to overcome the problem of
seawater intrusion by planting as many trees as possible along the river. so that during the
rainy season can save rainwater and release it in the dry season. The upstream rain catchment
area must also be protected so that the River Regime Coefficient is getting better. This means
that the difference in river water discharge between the rainy season and the dry season is not
too far away so that seawater intrusion can be detained.
