SAFETY PRECAUTION IN ELECTRICAL SIDES

 WAPDA SAFETY POLICY:

Any operation condition or urgency of service can never justify the life of any one.

 Hazards and safety:

1. No compromise on justification.

2. electric shock and burns from contact with live parts

3. injury from exposure to arcing, fire from faulty electrical equipment or installations
4. explosion caused by unsuitable electrical apparatus or static electricity igniting
flammable vapors or dusts, for example in a spray paint booth.
5. Remove the equipment from use immediately and check it, repair it or replace it
if:
the plug or connector is damaged
the cable has been repaired with tape, is not secure, or internal wires are visible etc
burn marks or stains are present (suggesting overheating)
6. Ensure that workers know how to use the electrical equipment safely
7. Make sure enough sockets are available. Check that socket outlets are not overloaded by
using un-fused adaptors as this can cause fires
8. Make sure anyone working with electricity has sufficient skills, knowledge and
experience to do so. Incorrectly wiring a plug can be dangerous and lead to fatal
accidents or fires
9. Switch off and unplug appliances before cleaning or adjusting them
10. Be aware of the dangers of working near or underneath overhead power lines. Electricity
can flash over from them, even though machinery or equipment may not touch them
11. The most common types of electrical injuries are: • Electrical shock • Electrocution (death
due to electrical shock) • Burns • Falls Electrical Injuries
12. Touching two live wires of different voltages will cause electrical shock. Electrical Shock
13. To avoid injuries, you should be aware of electrical hazards. Some of the most common
electrical hazards are: • Exposed electrical parts • Overloaded circuits • Defective insulation •
Improper grounding • Damaged power tools • Overhead power lines • Wet conditions
Electrical Hazards Let’s take a closer look at each of these hazards.
14. Overloading a circuit increases the potential for fires to occur. Overload hazards exist if: •
Too many devices are plugged into a circuit • The wire insulation melts • An improper
overcurrent protection device is used • No over current protection device is used Overloaded
Circuits
15. Grounding When an electrical system is properly grounded, there is a path that allows the
current to travel to the earth (the ground). When any electrical system is not properly
grounded, a hazard exists.
TYPES OF FIRES
Class A
Class A Fires consist of ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, trash or anything else that leaves an ash.

Water works best to extinguish a Class A fire.

Class B
Class B Fires are fueled by flammable or combustible liquids, which include oil, gasoline, and other similar

materials. Smothering effects which deplete the oxygen supply work best to extinguish Class B fires. Class B

fires are fires in flammable liquids such as gasoline, petroleum oil and paint. Class B fires also

include flammable gases such as propane and butane. Class B fires do not include fires involving cooking oils and

grease.

Class C
Class C Fires. Energized Electrical Fires are known as Class C fires. Always de-energize the circuit then use a

non-conductive extinguishing agent. Such as Carbon dioxide. Class C fires are fires involving energized electical

equipment such as motors, transformers, and appliances. Remove the power and the Class C fire becomes one

of the other classes of fire.

HOW TO REDUCE FIRE.

 Have your heating system serviced regularly by a professional, including
chimneys from wood-burning fireplaces. Clean around heat sources and keep
dust and other flammable items away from ignition sources.
 Remove the lint from your dryer filter after every use.
 Keep firewood, piles of leaves and trash away from the home
 Avoid using outlet extenders or plug-in power bars
 Store containers of cooking oil well away from the stoveConsider using borrowed
heat to keep outdoor pets warm.
 Be sure to properly extinguish smoking materials.
