A writer is often thought to work in isolation, introspective and musing through his cognition, illumination

and gaining insight through reflection. However, collaborative writing may enhance his scope of writing,
provoking a new chain of thoughts and getting a new perspective on his writings.
Collaborative writing may excite the writing on interaction with positive peers, healthy discussion and
fruitful exchange of information but may also give rise to conflicts.
The collaborative effort in writing may prove to be challenging as it may generate a conflict of interest,
conflict of procedure, conflict in writing styles, and unexpected conclusions. Procedural conflict
(disagreements about the way work is done) can damage the collaborative effort. Affective conflict
(disagreements resulting from prejudices, faulty belief systems and stereotyping) can result in negative
processes. However, substantive conflict is often productive. Substantive conflict is about the concepts
and ideas of a project that provokes positive and robust discussions and generates new ideas that arise
due to the synergy of different perceptions. Substantive conflict can be encouraged by being open to
new ideas, different thoughts, different voices, and unexpected conclusions.
Procedural conflicts can be removed by deciding beforehand how are you going to collaborate, how are
you going to incorporate different voices into your project. Affective conflict may be resolved by
applying scientific temper during the collaborative writing process. One can take help of social media,
different tools and strategies to experiment with collaborative writing like Facebook, GoogleDocs, Wiki
etc.
WPA outcomes value the ‘collaborative and social aspects of writing process’ as complex projects
require collaborative efforts. Collaborative efforts help in multitasking of big projects and improve the
quality by incorporating multitudes of ideas, thoughts, and voices. Collaboration can occur with different
people at different places in different time zones.
Collaborative writing forces the writers to clearly explain their arguments, mesh your arguments with
other people, and ultimately potentially produce better work.
