Specific Heat Capacity Experiment Results

1) The document describes an experiment to determine the specific heat capacities of water and oil by measuring their mass, initial and final temperatures after heating. 2) The experimental method involved weighing water and oil in beakers, measuring their initial temperatures, heating for 2 minutes, and measuring final temperatures. Specific heat was calculated using the formula Q=mCΔT. 3) The specific heat of water was determined to be 4186 J/kg°C but the specific heat of oil calculated higher than expected, likely due to heat absorption by the beaker during heating skewing temperature measurements.

Specific Heat Capacity

David Fabián Guerrero Díaz A00571065

March 26th, 2019

1º Objective:
- Determine heat of the water in base of its mass the specific heat and the change in
temperature
- Determine specific heat of the oil in base of its mass the heat of the water and the change
in temperature

2º Theoretical Basis:
Mass: a collection of incoherent particles, parts, or objects regarded as forming one body
Temperature: measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several arbitrary
scales, such as Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin.
Calorimetry: is the process of measuring the amount of heat released or absorbed during a
chemical reaction
Q=mC ∆ T
Specific heat: the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a substance
per unit of mass
Q
C=
m ∆T

3º Experimental Method
First in a beaker we put water then we weigh it and we measure the temperature, then we
heat it for 2 minutes then we measure the temperature again.
Then in a beaker we put oil then we weigh it and we measure the temperature, then we heat
it for 2 minutes then we measure the temperature again.

4º Data Computations and Errors

Computations

Q=.10891∗4186∗(303−293.5)
Q=4331.02397 J

Part 2
Data
m= 24.29g =.02429Kg
To 21.5°C = 294.5°K
=
T f= 50°C = 323°K
Q= 4331.02397J

Computations

4331.02397
C=
.02429∗(323−294.5)
J
C=6,256.3093
kg ° K

Error
When we check the specific heat we realized that we are wrong because it has to be
lower than water´s so we analyzed our process and we repeat it like 3 times and it
always was the same so we think that it was wrong because of the beaker because
maybe it absorbed heat and it change the temperature of the oil

5º Conclusion
We can observe that the specific heat capacity of the water is bigger than the specific heat
capacity of the oil, and we realized that the material you used in the experiment can change
your results.
