ABSTRACT

Asdi Andi, (2015): Improving Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive


Text by Using Problem Based Learning Strategy at
Islamic Senior High School of Alqasimiyah Sorek
Satu.

Many problems appear in learning included in writing a descriptive


text faced by some of the second year students of islamic senior high school
of alqasimiyah Sorek Satu. It can be seen from unsatisfactory writing score
and some problems that the students obtain in writing. The students get
difficulty in sharing their ideas into writing form. They don’t know how to
use the appropriate grammar in their writing, and they have lack of
vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting this
research.

The research was conducted for the purpose of improving the


students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using Problem Based
Learning. This research is Classroom Action Research by using Kemmiss
and McTaggart model. The writing was scored using ESL composition
Profile. In analyzing data the researcher used Glasser and strauss model:
Data collection, validation, interpretation, and action. Then, described in
presentation model.

Based on the reseach result, this reseach is categorised succesful. It


can seen from the base score data, Cycle 1 and cycle 2 data. It can be seen
that there were 9 students got score 44(69.23%) , 3 students got score
56(23.08%), 1 student got score 60(7.69%). The scores of students in cycle
1 Improved to be 1 student got score 40(7.69%), 1 student got score
42(7.69%),1 student got score 44(6.69%),2 students got score 46(15.38%),3
students got score 48(23.08%),2 students got score 54(15.38%),1 student
got score 56(7.69%),1 student got score 58(7.69%) and 1 student got score
62(7.69%). The scores of the students improved again in cycle 2 to be 2
students got score 56(15.38%),2 students got 58(15.38%),3 students got
62(23.08%), 2 students got score 64(15.38%),1 student got score
66(7.69%),2 students got score 68(15.38%) and 1 student got score
77(7.69%). Therefore, the researcher concluded that by using PBL can
improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text at islamic senior high
school of al-qasimiyah sorek satu.
