Ota, Regional Director, Archaeological Survey of India, Bhopal has proved beyond doubt that the Acheulian artefacts in huge numbers are preserved in low energy sediments in an amphitheater-like basin developed in Vindhyan sand stone and Deccan basalts. As the basin has no significant outlet, it experienced low intensity. erosional and depositional processes in sub-humid environment during the Acheulian period. The rate of sedimentation must have been very slow, thus allowing excellent preservation of Acheulian artefacts over long time period of the Pleistocene. P.D. Sabale Title: Environmental Archaeological Studies of Middle Reach of Bhima: A Case Study from Solapur District of Maharashtra, Paleoenvironmental reconstruction refers to the investigations which are undertaken to reconstruct the climate and vegetation of a specific time and place. A variety of physical and biologic information is used to reconstruct palecenvironment and climate changes in the study area. Other than sedimentologic and pedogenic evidence, a variety of paleoecologic methods based on biologically derived contents or floral-faunal assemblages found in deposits are also employed. Furthermore, initial structural geologic findings suggest that geomorphic and climatic influence played a more pronounced role on late Quaternary hydrographic evolution than previously assumed. The first indented anthropogenic changes of the regional hydrography took place from the late Medieval. Strong human impacts on ‘a regional scale occurred from the 18th century AD onwards. To overcome these deficiencies new research is necessary. Several current and planned projects on river valley and its development, restoration in the region ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16 23d issue DECCAN COLLEGE, DEEMED UNIVERSITY, PUNE open promising opportunities for the regular integration of palaeoflood and its effect on ancient monuments are studied. Future research, should aim at developing and integrating multiproxy records from a variety of scientific perspectives. Close links to highly detailed records of climate, fluvial geomorphology, paleotlood, its distribution, effect on ancient settlements and human impact, must be encouraged and fostered. Protohistory V.S. Shinde and Nilesh Jadhav Rakhigarhi 2015-16 The present excavation was carried out at the site of Rakhigarhi, which is the biggest Harappan city, located in Hissar District of the state of Haryana along the dried ‘Chautang River, one of the major tributaries of the Ghaggar River, It is spread over an area of 550 ha and has over 22 m thick habitation debris in which the remains of Early and Mature Harappan phases have been excavated. This excavation is being carried out in collaboration with the State Department of Archaeology, Government of Haryana. Excavations were aimed at understanding the cultural sequence and composition of the Harappan population The excavation at RGR- 2 revealed several features of interest, primarily around a complex of mud-brick structures (Fig. 1). Evidence for rooms can also be seen in the foundations of walls present on the muc-brick 5E, DEEMED UNIVERSITY, PUNE platforms, running either north-south or east-west. In some parts of the excavated area, there is evidence for platforms made of mud-brick just outside these rooms. id brick has also been found (Fig. 2). Other important finds include a Evidence for ‘bathrooms’ made of goldsmith’s workshop and drainage (Fig. 3). Antiquities recovered include beads of various shapes and materials (Fig, 4), terracotta toys and figurines (Fig. 5) copper objects such as bangles and rods (Fig, 6) and so on, Stone objects included chert weights, blades and cores. So far 41 burials have been excavated and there are 3 different kinds of burials from the site namely Primary, Secondary and Symbolic. Usually, the buried pots are found to the north of the head inside the pit, sometimes along with jewellery and tools (Fig. 7 (One unique burial was uncovered this season which has not been reported from other sites. Western India is now emerging as one of those places where the transition(s) from hunter-gatherers to farmers occurred locally, so itis possible to observe the whole sequence of these processes within the region as a whole. This transformation which represents a profound social change is generally attributed to traditional climate forcing model leading to a collapse of foraging economies. This research discusses that the origin of agricultural lifestyle in western India did not happen because of the collapse of the foraging economies due to climatic factor but because of the resilient cultural system they had by using the tenets of TAC. Prabodh Shirvalkar Title: Excavations at Pachamata Co-investigators : Dr. Lalit Pandey and Dr. Teresa Raczak Pachamata is located in Rajsomand District of Rajasthan, ‘The site was excavated jointly by JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Deccan College, Pune and Kennesaw State University, USA. The site has five mounds out of which ‘one mound was selected for excavation. Due to practical reasons the excavation was conducted in the school yard. This proved to be very important as after the site of Gilund, this is the second Ahar culture site which has produced the evidence of parallel wall structure made of mud bricks. In the ceramic collections, itis dominated by White Painted Black and Red Ware, Black and Red Ware, Red Slipped Ware, Grey Ware and Tan Ware. In antiquities, beads of steatite, terracotta and other semi-precious stones have been found, Terracotta bull figurines, discs, perforated discs and ear studs were found. Ahar type sealings have been found but in a very small number. The C14 dates ‘obtained from the site are in bracket of 2200 to 1700 BCE, DECCAN COLLEGE, DEEMED UNIVERSITY, PUNE Historical Archaeology P,P. A total of 5195 animal skeletal fragments were analysed, of which only 1869 could be identified and they represent the remains of animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pig, horse, ass and dog. Of these identified animals, cattle were the most important as the skeletal ‘elements of this animal are the most frequently recorded specimens from the site (Figs. 1-2). The dominance of cattle bones at the site of Malli point to a system where cattle were raised both for meat and traction. The buffalo also contributed to the food economy at the site, though not on a great scale, The animal skeletal fragments recovered from the Megalithic burials revealed the partial burials of cow/ox and goat/sheep. Of the eight Megalithic burials excavated at Malli, six have yielded the evidence of animal remains. Besides, the faunal remains recovered from the site of Kotada Bhadli were also studied. They include number of animal species that includes domestic mammals, wild mammals, and reptiles. It was possible to identify sixteen species. Shailendra Mohan continued his research activity on Nihali-Korku-Hindi contact in Buldana. Nihali is, considered a linguistic isolate, a language for which no historical (genetic) relationships can be established. While Nihali has received some linguistic attention this will be the first attempt to provide a rich multimedia corpus and a description of the language. Synchronically Nihali exhibit shared structural features from Munda, Dravidian, Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman languages. The recent genetic, studies by Federica Crivellaro (2011) and others also confirm that Nihali speakers are a genetic outlier. However, they show characters that would confirma late introgression of - mostly = Austro-Asiatic markers due to gene flow with Korkus and other neighbours. The present study observes that place names also exhibit sound changes. The place name Sonballi! Sonbardi provides an evidence for sound change in progress in place names. The study also observes that cultural similarity may not correlate the linguistic similarity. Nihali and Korku speakers are culturally Ph.D. Students Ongcing similar butate linguistically diverse. The local language is mainly spoken at home whereas Hindi is used in business and market, The impact of Hindi language has deeply affected the Phonology, Morphology and Syntax in course of time. Retroflex, palatal and nasal aspiration are studied and found phonological influence on Nagpuri Marathi, In Morphology, focus, marking, case marking, negation has been studied. Language- Kolami is an identity marker forthe Kolams. For them their language is the only thing, which differentiates them from other communities in the area like the Gonds, the Pardhans, the Kunbis, the Navaboudhas and the Muslism. The Kolams encourage their pre-school children to learn Marathi- to facilitate transition from Kolami environment to Marathi environment in schools- that hasn’t resulted in discouraging the use of Kolami. Mainly standard and local Marathi was used in public speeches made by the Kolams. It seems like diglossia with bilingualism situation- Marathi is used in formal situations, even among the Kolams.
