ABU, MT.: (Rajasthan) hill station on the Aravalli Range; sacred centre of Jain
worshippers, Dilwara temples.

ADAM‟S BRIDGE: Very nearly joined to India between Mannar Peninsula and
Danushkodi by a line of sand banks and rocks called Adam‘s Bridge‘.
AGA KHAN PALACE: In Pune where Mahatma Gandhi was kept interned with his wife
Kasturba Gandhi. Kasturba died in this palace.
AJMER: Pilgrim centre for Muslims; tomb of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chisti.
ALEXANDRIA: City and sea-port of Egypt founded by Alexander the Great.
AMARNATH: Situated at a height of about 4054 metres in Kashmir. It is a place of
pilgrimage for the Hindus.
ANGKOR VAT: A ruined city in Cambodia where beautiful specimens of ancient Indian
art and culture are found.
AURANGABAD: One of the important towns of Maharashtra State; tomb of Emperor
Auranzeb and of his wife. Ellora Ajanta Caves are reached from here.
AUROVILLE: It is an international township constructed in Pondicherry with the help of
UNESCO.
AVADI: Near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Government owned Heavy vehicles factory.
Vijayanta‘and Ajit‘tanks are manufactured here.
AJANTA (near Aurangabad in Maharashtra): Originally Buddhist monasteries having
unique architecture, sculpture and paintings.
AMBER FORT: The deserted capital near Jaipur, there is a huge fort on a hill rock; it
contains finest specimens of Rajput architecture.
AKBAR’S TOMB (Sikandra): Famous for its carvings & architecture of Hindu & Mughal
Art.
BIBI KA MAQBARA (Aurangabad): Mausoleum built by Aurangzeb in 1660 A.D. in
memory of his wife Rabia Durrani.
BODH GAYA (Bihar near Patna): The place where Lord Buddha got enlightenment under
the Mahabodhi tree; a place of pilgrimage for the Buddhists. There is a 60 m high
Buddha temple built by Ashoka the Great.
BULAND DARWAZA (Agra): Gateway at Fatehpur Sikri, 176 feet high, the highest gate in
the world built by Akbar, the Great.
BADRINATH: Himalayas; Place of pilgrimage for the Hindus near Gangortri Glacier.
BELUR MATH: It is monastery near Calcutta in West Bengal founded by Swami
Vivekananda. A beautiful temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

BETHLEHEM: Palestine; about 9 km South of Jerusalem; birth-place of Jesus; Church of
Nativity.
CAPE COMORIN: also called Kanya Kumari in Tamil Nadu, where Arabian Sea and the
Bay of Bengal meet the Indian Ocean. It gives a beautiful view of sun-set and sun-rise.
CHENNAI: Capital of Tamil Nadu is the third largest city in India. Known for Fort
St.George, Light House, St.Thomas Mount, Integral Coach Factory, Adyar (the
headquarters of the Theosophical Society)
CHIDAMBARAM: Famous for its great Hindu Siva temple, dedicated to Nataraja or Siva
in his aspect of Cosmicdance‘. Annamalai University is located here
CHITTORGARH: Ancient capital and fortress of Udaipur; known for Tower of Victory and
Mira Bai‘s Temple.
DAKSHINESWAR: 8 Kms from Calcutta where Vivekananda was initiated into religious
life by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
DOWNING STREET: No.10 Downing Street is the official residence of the Prime Minister
of England in London.
DURAND LINE: the line demarcating the limits of neutral territory between Pakistan and
Afghanistan.
DILWARA TEMPLES (Mount Abu, Rajasthan): Five Jain temples were constructed here in
the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. These temples are known for their carvings and
architectural grandeur.
ELEPHANTA CAVES (Maharashtra): Situated in an island 25 km from Mumbai, famous for
the statues of Shiva and Parvati and of Trimurti, Shiva in three moods as the Creator, the
Destroyer and the Preserver.
ELLORA (Aurangabad): It is famous for its rock-cut Kailash Temple of the Dravidian style
of architecture. Ellora cave temples, 34 in number. There are three classes of caves,
Hindu, Buddhist and Jain, constructed during the 8th century and onwards.
EAGLE‟s NEST: Name given to the historic fort at Raigarh in Kolaba district of
Maharashtra where 300 years ago, Chatrapati Shivaji, the great warrior-statesman, was
crowned.
EIFFEL TOWER: In Paris (France) 300 m high and built at a cost of 200,000 pounds. It is
now being used as a Meteorological Wireless Station.
GIBRALTAR: British fortress and naval base on west end of the Mediterranean (extreme
south of Spain) key to the Mediterranean.

GOMATESWARA : (Karnataka) famous for the 2000 year old statue of Jain Sage carved
out of a single stone.
GREAT WALL of CHINA: 2400 km long wall; its construction was started by Chinese King
Emperor Shih Hwang.
GWALIOR: in Madhya Pradesh famous for its Fort, Tansen‘s Tomb, Rani Laxmi Bai‘s
Chhatri.
GOL GUMBAZ (Bijapur, Karnataka): The largest dome in the world. It has the world
famous whispering gallery.
HAGUE,THE: (The Netherlands) Seat of International Court of Justice;
HAMPI: site ruins of Vijayanagar - ancient capital of Vijayanagar empire. It is in
Karnataka.
HANGING GARDENS of BABYLON: one of the Seven Wonders of the World; planted near
the Euphrates in 603 B.C.
HIROSHIMA: in Central Honshu (Japan) close to the Island of Light with famous Shinto
temples; first city destroyed by atom bomb in the Second World War.
HOWRAH BRIDGE: a cantilever span bridge constructed over the river Hooghly
connecting Howrah Railway Station with Kolkata.
HYDERABAD-SECUNDERABAD: Twin city-capital of Andhra Pradesh. It stands on the river
Musi, known for Charminar, Osmania University, Salarjung Museum - one of the richest
and most varied collections in Asia.
JAMSHEDPUR: (Bihar) centre of iron and steeel industry; Tata Iron and Steel Factory is
located here.
JOG FALLS: also called Gersoppa Falls in Karnataka are one of the highest warerfalls in
the world. These falls are formed by the river Sharavasti which takes a big leap down a
steep rock from a height of 253 metres.
JUMA MASJID, Mandu: is in Madhya Pradesh; it depicts a synthesis of Hindu and Muslim
styles in architecture.
JALIANWALA BAGH (Amritsar, Punjab): It was the scene of indiscriminate shooting by
General Dyer on April 13, 1919 when a public protest meeting was being held. A
Martyrs’ memorial has been erected to commemorate those killed in the firing.
JAGANNATH TEMPLE (Puri, Orissa): Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of
Vishnu.

KHAJURAHO (Madhya Pradesh): Built between 1150-1250 by Chandela dynasty; there
are a number of Hindu temples, the most magnificent is Mahadeva temple. There are
stone carvings on walls depicting daily chores, sorrows and cares, the intimate ecstasies
of love.
KONARK (Orissa): It is the mythological conception of the Sun God riding a twenty four
wheel chariot drawn by seven horses, carved in stone.
KAILASHA TEMPLE: rock-cut temple in Ellora caves.
KALPAKKAM: near Chennai in Tamil Nadu is known for Chennai Atomic Power Project
KANCHI or KANCHEEPURAM: Near Chennai was the ancient capital of ancient Pallavas;
famous for ancient temples.
KANDAHAR: This is a town in Afghanistan where terrorists landed hijacked Indian
Airlines plane IC 814 with 155 passengers in 1999, keeping them hostage for 7 days.
KANYA KUMARI: in Tamil Nadu, famous temple (the Virgin Goddess) situated at Cape
Comorin on the extreme southern tip of India where the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and
Indian Ocean meet; a picturesque spot. Vivekananda Rock Memorial Buddha
KAZIRANGA: is a Game Sanctuary in Assam. It is centre of great Indian one-horned
rhinos.
KODAIKANAL: in Tamil Nadu famous for its Observatory for study of Solar Physics.
KOVALAM: is a sea-beach about 16 km from Trivandrum in Kerala. Developed as a
Tourist Resort by India Tourism Corporation
KREMLIN: Large fortified citadel in Moscow, now the headquarters of Russia. The
Kremlin, originally built in1156 by Yuri, (George) Dolgoruki
LUMBINI: birth place of Buddha. It is in Nepal. The Nepalese Government have plans to
develop the place with the U.N. assistance as an Intl Tourist Resort.
MATHURA: a holy city in UP; Birth-place of Lord Krishna, Hindu temples; oil refinery.
MECCA: the holiest city of the Mohammedan world in Arabia, where the Prophet was
born. It stands in the desert. It is a place of pilgrimage and Muslims from all parts of the
world visit the place it for Haj in every year.
MOUNT BLANC: highest mountain peak in Europe. It is in the Alps on the confines of
Italy and France, longest road tunnel in the world.
MUNICH: (Germany) scene of Munich pact; art galleries; The 20th Olympic Games
(1972) were held here.

MADHAVGARH (Mandu, M.P.): It is a huge fort on a hill constructed by the Malwas in
the 11th century, once the capital of the Ghoris and Khiljis, the pleasure resort of the
Muslim rulers including Emperor Jehangir.
MAHABALIPURAM (Chennai): It is about 8 miles from Conjeevaram on the sea and
contains many relics of Pallava Art also called Seven Pagodas.
MEENAKSHI TEMPLE (Madurai, Tamil Nadu): It is remarkable for its most picturesque
850 feet high temple of goddess Meenakshi with the hall of thousand pillars in which a
group of figures are carved out of a single stone.
NALANDA (Bihar): Seat of ancient Buddhist University founded by Kumaragupta
OMKAR TEMPLE, MP: Shiva temple on an island in Narmada, also called ‘Black Pagoda’.
PANDHARPUR (Maharashtra): Famous temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu; it is also called
Dakshina Kashi; pilgrim centre.
PANNA: in M.P. Panna district is known for diamond mines. Panna town has several
buildings of historical interest including Shri Baldeoji temple.
PEARL HARBOUR: in Hawaii Island; Naval Base; scene of Japanese attack in World War II.
PETRONAS TWIN TOWERS: Located in Kuala Lumpur with 88 storeys high, these are the
tallest buildings in the World.
PLASSEY: a village on Ganges (West Bengal) Battle of Plassey was fought here in 1757 in
which Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah and laid foundation of British Rule in India.
POKHRAN: The Nuclear test site in Rajasthan, 600 kms from Jaipur. The first nuclear test
was conducted on May18, 1974 and five more in 1998.
PYRAMIDS of EGYPT: are vast stone or brick-built structures on west bank of the Nile.
They date back to about 300 B.C. The largest is called the Great Pyramid which is 146
metres high and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Three lakh men were
employed for 20 years to build it. These Pyramids have inner chambers and
subterranean entrances built by pharaohs as oval tombs.
QUTUB MINAR: in Delhi is one of master- pieces of Indian architecture and art. It is
biggest minaret in world. Completed by Altamash
RED SQUARE: It is a famous open space in Moscow linked with Kremlin by three gates
used for political demonstrations and processions. Lenin‘s mausoleum is in Red Square
ROME: capital of Italy; on the River Tiber; one of the most famous cities of the world
also known as Eternal City.

RAMESHWARAM (Tamil Nadu): One of the most important pilgrim centers in India;
famous for its magnificent temples.
SHANTINIKETAN (West Bengal): About 90 miles from Kolkata; seat of the famous Vishva
Bharati University founded by poet Rabindranath Tagore.
SANCHI (Madhya Pradesh): Ancient Buddhist monastery famous for ‘Great Stupa’ which
is 17 m high and 36.5 m in diameter.
SRIHARIKOTA: in Nellore district on Andhra coast is India‘s Satellite Launching Centre.
Sriharikota Range (SHAR) comprises Sriharikota Launch Complex, Rocket Shed Facility,
Static Test and Evaluation Complex, Solid Propellant Space Booster Plant etc
SUEZ CANAL: Ship canal (Egypt) it connects Mediterranean (Port Said) with the Red Sea
SARNATH: situated 8 km outside Varanasi. Saranath is the famous place of Buddhist
pilgrimage in India. In the DeerPark of Sarnath, Gautama Buddha preached his First
Sermon. Also located here is the famous Ashoka Pillar of polished sand-stone whose lion
capital was adopted by the new Republic of India as the State Emblem.
SERINGAPATNAM: capital of Karnataka during rule of Tipu Sultan. Fourth and last
Mysore war was fought here. Tipu Sultan died here fighting bravely against British
forces.
TAXILA: in West Pakistan; site of excavation, old seat of Buddhist culture and famous for
ancient Taxila University.
TEL AVIV: magnificent city in Palestine built by the Jews; capital of Israel.
THUMBA: near Trivandrum in Kerala State is known as rocket launching station.
TIRUPATI: in Andhra State about 160 km to the north west of Chennai is one of the
holiest places in South India. This hill temple of Sri Venkateshwara is an example of early
Dravidian architecture and is one of the finest in the south.
TRAFALGAR: Cape Trafalgar is famous for the naval battle fought between the British led
by Admiral Nelson and an allied naval force of France and Spain in1805. Admiral Nelson
won the battle though he was himself killed in action.
TRIVENI: in Allahabad (UP) Confluence of the Ganges, the Jamuna and the mythical
Saraswati; a place of pilgrimage for the Hindus.
VARANASI: or Banares is a town in UP very sacred to Hindus. It is known as religious
capital of Hindu India. Famous for Hindu University, Vishwanath Temple, Manmandir
with Jaisingh‘s Observatory, Ramnagar Fort etc.,

TOWER of VICTORY (Chittor, Rajasthan): A famous Hindu monument of marble, raised
by Rana Kumbha in 1448 to commemorate his victory over the combined armies of
Malwa and Gujarat. It consists of 9 storeys and is 122 feet high.
VATICAN: the Papal State of Italy; an independent territory; the palace of Pope in Rome.
It includes the Church of St. Peter.
VICTORIA FALLS: on the River Zambesi, Zambia-Central Africa. These Falls, the greatest
in the world are 1700metres wide.
VIJAY GHAT: in Delhi is Samadhi of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, former PM of India.
VISAKHAPATNAM: big harbour on eastern coast ofIndia; ship building yard.
VISWA SHANTI STUPA: (World Peace Pagoda) 45 m high stupa raised a top, the
picturesque Ratnagiri hill, it is first stupa of its kind in India.
VIVEKANANDA ROCK: is situated near Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India‘s
coastline. It has been so named in memory of Swami Vivekananda.
VICTORIA MEMORIAL (Kolkata): Magnificent building having an art gallery depicting the
history of the British rule in India; it was erected by voluntary collections in the memory
of Queen Victoria.
WAGAH BORDER: border between India and Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Mr. Atal
Behari Vajpayee crossed the border to enter Pakistan by bus as part of his peace
initiative with India’s neighbour.
WALL STREET: a street in New York, centre of US Banking and Finance.
WARDHA, Maharashtra: Mahatma Gandhi lived here for several years; centre of cotton
trade.
WATERLOO: famous for battle of Waterloo which marked end of Napoleon‘s power.
WELLINGTON: in the Nilgiris hills (Tamil Nadu) is known for Defence Services Staff
College.
White HOUSE: is the Official Residence of the President of the USA. It is located at 600.

WIMBLEDON: in London, famous for Lawn Tennis Court.
YELLOW SEA: Sea between northern China and Korea.
ZAMBESI: River in South East Africa. It flows east to Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean.
ZOJILA: a pass in way from Srinagar to Leh and then to Yerkand in Tibet.
SOME TERMS
ADVALOREM: means according to the value. It is calculated according to value. A duty
the amount of which depends upon the value of the property taxed is called an ad
valorem duty.
ALIBI: a plea that accused was not presented at the time and place of occurrence.

AMNESTY: a general pardon that is granted to the prisoners generally during a major
national celebration.
ADJOURNMENT MOTION: A motion moved by a member in a legislature, when it is
desired to draw the attention of the executive to a matter of urgent public importance
or interest.
BALANCE OF POWER: To preserve equality of strength between countries so that no
single country becomes powerful. Enough to be a source of danger to others
BRAIN DRAIN: It is a term applied to the exodus of technicians and scientists to other
countries where they get more and better opportunities.
BICAMERAL SYSTEM : The form of legislature which has two Chambers or Houses as
opposed to unicameral system having only one House of Legislature.
BUREAUCRACY: The form of government which is conducted by officials, who are
specially trained for the services. These officers control the policy of the government;
they are responsible only to their chiefs and not to the public.
BUFFER STATE: A smaller state lying between potentially hostile larger states, lessening
the risk of direct war between them. Poland was a buffer State between Germany and
Russia; Belgium is a buffer State between France and Germany.
BULLS AND BEARS: are terms used on the Stock Exchange. Bull refers to one who seeks
to raise the price of stock and speculate on a rise, whereas Bears means one who sells
stock for delivery at a future date anticipating fall in prices.
CARTE BLANCHE: Blank cheque, i.e., to give full power
COUP D'ETAT: A political strategy or action resulting in the change of government,
generally initiated by military personnel. A sudden change of government brought about
by force. It is different from a revolution which involves the participation of the masses.
DOCTRINE OF LAPSE: The East India Company laid down a principle that on the death of
an Indian ruling prince without a direct descendant, the British Government could
refuse to sanction the adoption of an heir and declare the dominions of the deceased as
